A quaint town in the heart of northern Oregon
Nestled on the hillside in the north of Oregon just south of Cape Meares, and overlooking a golden sandy beach, Oceanside looks more like a quaint European fishing village than a North American town. This charming little place is close to the Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge, much of which can be viewed from many Oceanside vacation rentals. This photo-worthy stretch of rugged coastline can be used for outdoor adventures, from clamming in the nearby bays to surfing on the continual Pacific swells. The Tillamook coast is easily accessible from Oceanside vacation rentals and teems with interesting museums. Jump in your rental car and head off to see the Garibaldi Museum which chronicles the rich maritime heritage of the region. Alternatively, the Tillamook Air Museum features World War 2 aviation artifacts and vintage aircrafts under the last remaining blimp hanger in the US. In downtown Tillamook, you can discover the history of the first pioneers at the Country Museum, along with stories about buried treasure and fallen towns which were almost lost in time.
Catch your dinner in Oceanside
As the name suggests, activities in Oceanside are centered around the sea and rugged coastline. To help kids discover where food really comes from, you can take them down to the bays to pick clams, or – during the fall months – bring up Dungeness crab traps. The town has a long history of fishing and Dory boats bring back their daily hauls of Chinook salmon and Albacore tuna which can be bought at the harbor. You can also opt for a fishing charter to have a go yourself. Take everything back to your Oceanside vacation rental to cook up a fine fishy feast while you overlook the beach and the lapping sea.
All-weather adventures in Oceanside
The town's proximity to the sea keeps it mild all year round with no extreme swings in temperatures. It's unsurprising the summer months are the busiest for Oceanside vacation rentals, and the days are hot and glorious. But don't discount winter or fall. The town is quieter at this time, and the coast offers some lovely bracing walks looking down over the sea below. Plus, you can always warm up in any of the town's restaurants which offer freshly caught seafood all year round, or dive into one of the interesting museums nearby.
The Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge
The Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge was the first of its kind west of the Mississippi, and one of the smallest in the country. The tiny park, consisting of rocky outcrops and islets a half mile or so off the mainland, is a wildlife haven. South of Alaska, the refuge has the largest population of breeding tufted puffins, the cheeky iconic birds with deep orange beaks, and noisy common murres which nest here in their thousands. It's also the only site in the north of Oregon used by Steller sea lions for pupping.
