About Dawn VanVolkinburg

Both my husband and I grew up near Grand Rapids, MI where we currently live. If we could we would live in Traverse City now but my husband works at a hospital in Grand Rapids and enjoys what he does so we just visit the area as often as we can!

Dawn VanVolkinburg purchased this studio in 2014

Why Dawn VanVolkinburg chose Elk Lake

We bought this suite along with the one next door because we have a condo in the same complex and just one floor down from these. We love the location and the view so much we decided to buy another! We both love northern Michigan especially the Traverse City area and have been coming here for years. We plan to retire in the area. In the meantime, we enjoy down time at our beautiful condo on the East Bay. When we can't be at the condo we like to have others enjoy it.

What makes this studio unique

We fell in love with the area because how beautiful the area is. Lake Michigan, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Torch Lake, Mission Point and so many other beautiful things to see and enjoy! What kept us coming back is amidst all the beauty are wonderful welcoming people.

Cozy retreat

  • 5 of 5

Walked into unit and Wow, "it is cozy"! But it is perfect for two people who are looking to relax after a long day at the numerous wineries around and near Traverse City. We were too late for the sunsets but I'm sure they were great. Cons: We did have to get a bag of ice for our cooler as the small fridge/freezer did not have the space for ice. And my husband would have liked a listing of the TV channels as the guide on the TV did not work and he was looking for the FS1 Channel and had to cruise through the entire channel lineup twice before he found it. We'll be back as we have many more wineries to check out.

The pool and beach were nice.

  • 3 of 5

Obviously the high price was for the view and pool. The room however was very small, much smaller than I expected for the price. The room itself was clean and the owner was very nice on the phone. There were a lot of stairs to climb ( before my hip replacement that would've been a real problem). Personally I believe this property is way over priced.

DID NOT LIKE

  • 1 of 5

Really. For what we paid for a 4 night stay. The only nice thing about this place was the view. The condo needs updates BIG TIME. Its small. 2 chairs were uncomfortable. Plug hanging from the wall the coffee pot was plugged into. Also in the bathroom but not as bad and the bathroom sink was cracked. The lights over the kitchen sink didn't work and the freezer needs to be thawed. The outlet outside on the balcony had bees going in and out. We've been in condo before but nothing like this. I did contact the owner. She said she would check into all of this We would have been better off in a hotel with a view. A lot of money was spent. Very disappointing. I would not recommend this property.

P.S. A fresh coat of paint wouldn't hurt either.

Very nice one bedroom unit

  • 4 of 5

The condo is very small but comfortable for two people. It is conveniently located near the Grand Traverse Resort where my husband played golf on "the Bear" course. We enjoyed the condo pool and beach and rented a Sea-do to cruise the Bay. The air conditioner broke down during our stay but Dawn had someone repair it within a few hours. The condo is on the 3rd floor and didn't appear to have access to an elevator so I would not recommend it to anyone who has difficulty with stairs. It wasn't a problem for us. We enjoyed our stay and recommend to others who do not mind the tight quarters.

Perfect spot for a couple's long weekend getaway.

  • 5 of 5

Close to vineyards, downtown and not a far drive to the dunes, Petoskey, Suttons Bay, etc. Beautiful sunsets as well!

Called the 'Gold Coast' the Traverse City area is a beautiful place to relax, walk, bike, visit wineries and breweries, go shopping, in the winter you can enjoy the lights and cross country and downhill skiing, watching the waves on Lake Michigan, snow shoeing and snowmobiling. There are activities for kids, adults, singles and couples to enjoy. There are 25 wineries on Leelanau Peninsula and many more on Old Mission Peninsula. Traverse City is also close to Elk Rapids, Alden, Leland, and Suttons Bay, these are quaint towns that are a must visit spring through fall. Torch Lake is a must see! It is one of the world's most beautiful lakes and looks like the Caribbean Ocean! Another must see is Good Harbor Beach miles of soft sand and views of the Manitou Islands and Sleeping Bear Dunes. Sleeping Bear Dunes was rated the most beautiful place to visit in 2011. Charlevoix, Petoskey and Glenn Arbor are all within a 45 minute drive and are a must visit as well.
