About Kirsten Malloy
We moved here from New York City after having our first child. We wanted a place in the country that would be nurturing and healing for our growing family. It's definitely done that for us and we are delighted to share our home with others while we seek new adventures!
Kirsten Malloy purchased this Chalet in 2005
Why Kirsten Malloy chose South Kortright
The knotty pine cathedral ceilings make this home feel so spacious and roomy. The energy here feels inviting, warm, friendly so peaceful! After experiencing the inside of the house we ventured outside to the lake and could hardly believe we could actually own a little piece of heaven like this. Swimming in the lake each morning invigorates and refreshes each and every one of our spirits daily!
What makes this Chalet unique
Having a lake in the back yard is such a blessing. The added amenities like the 15ft trampoline, tree house, swing set, sand boxes, slides and swings and boats truly make this property a children's paradise! Also the endless trails through the woods and the road that encircles the lake is so ideal for taking a leisurely stroll or bike ride.

Cozy Lakeside Getaway
We had a great time in the Catskills at this colorful lakeside cabin! This cabin is perfect for you if you want to leave your phone and email behind and have a cup of hot coco with a good book by the wood burner. We visited during the winter, and the recent snow fall gave the area and cabin a winter wonderland feeling. We had a great time disconnecting, relaxing by the fire, cooking with friends, exploring the frozen lake, and local attractions the Catskills have to offer. The cabin definitely feels lived in like some of the reviews mentioned, but it makes it more homey and inviting then other properties I have stayed at. There was a good collection of games to play, books to read, videos to watch, and music to listen to. Honestly if your going in the summer, you are going to be spending most of your time outside on the lake any way. We are looking forward to going back in the summer and really taking advantage of the lake!
Great time, Nice place, a couple problems
First, the good: we had a great time. We were a big group of 3 families with kids, and we stayed in the cabin for 3 days and 2 nights. The location on the lake is beautiful, and we had a lot of fun sledding, hiking, cooking and eating together, and hanging out. It was bitter cold outside (high of 8 degrees Fahrenheit), so we weren't able to do everything outside that we wanted to, but still we had fun.
The cabin itself was nice: rustic, with a few loose ends, but totally fine. When we arrived, the hot water pipe in the kitchen was frozen. We called the neighbor as we were instructed to do -- a very nice guy -- who did his best to thaw it, but could not manage it. So we ended up having to wash dishes in the bathroom, and heat up water on the stove for washing.
The other problem was that there was no wi-fi or phone service in the cabin, because the owner had not paid the bill. This made it hard to get in contact with the owner re: the pipe problem, because there is very little cell phone reception in the area.
There were also some mouse droppings under the sink, but we didn't see any mice so we weren't too bothered by it (this is probably inevitable, given the cold and the location of the cabin). The kitchen is well stocked with pots and pans, utensils, etc., although many of the pots and pans had not been cleaned well by whoever had used them last, so we had to wash them all before using them (which wouldn't have been too much of a pain, except that we had to wash them in the bathroom sink).
However, despite the inconveniences, we had a great time, and this cabin would be a fine place to stay with once the issues listed above have been taken care of.
Also, just something that took us a little while to figure out: when using the wood stove (which def. kept the cabin nice and toasty) you have to fully extend the lever in the front when you open the door, otherwise smoke pours out of the stove when you open it to stoke the fire or add more wood. You then push the lever back in when you close the door.
I love it
Kirsten was very lovely and very kind to let us stay litlle bit later then the check out time!! By the way WE were very glad that we didn’t cancel the trip because of bad reviews! Who wrote the bad reviews really didn’t know how to enjoy the “wild life”... The house didn’t smeel bad at all, is just the smeel of house made of wood!!! And everything was so clean and organize!!! The house was so confort for all of us and we were a group of 7!!!! LOVE IT
Location is beautiful and the cottage was ideal for cooking and socializing in the large common area
Despite a rough start getting in, we had a great time with our adult children. The weather was beautiful for October and we enjoyed the boats:-)
A very cluttered family home not well suited for renters
We have rented many times from homeaway.com and I never felt compelled to share feedback until now. I would not recommend this house to anyone.
This house is just too cluttered with the families things (kids toys, art work, videos, movies, books, sea shells....) to feel comfortable in. It has a very stale, musty smell. Wifi, direct tv and cell service did not work. Attempted use of land line but not available for long distance (Massachusetts #) due to non payment. Beds very uncomfortable. Old bath towels. No hand towels or face cloths. No tissues. Refrigerator and cupboards still contain family food supplies. Screen door falls off when opened. Lawn not mowed recently.
Paid a significant amount per night for a very undesirable place.
I would say that most people have been fine with the additional items in the house: the games, art, videos, music collection and books...but then again, I guess a few have not. It really depends on the guest and what their used to, preferences, and so on. To say the house is not well-suited for renters, is going a bit too far, considering we've received quite a few 5 star ratings from very satisfied guests! :) Having said that, I feel for these past renters because we were in the middle of transitioning our service to fios so that we could offer high speed internet (without limit), cable and phone all in one package and in that transition we allowed some of our services to terminate. Since this event, we made sure to turn our services back on until the Fios could be installed since there were some unexpected delays with hooking up the service! Also...re: towels, apparently while we were away from the area several of our towels got misplaced so recently my cleaner purchased new towels and wash cloths. Regarding the lawn....we've hired a mower and he comes regularly to mow the lawn. Unfortunately, just prior to these guests' arrival he'd broken his arm and we did not have time to get a replacement for him. The screen door is brand new, but a screw fell off and needs to be replaced. I have requested that my neighbor take a look at it and repair it! Hopefully this response helps to clarify the situation a bit more.
Charming Mountain Getaway
What a wonderfully cozy cottage set in one of the most beautiful locations! We had a group of 5 adults and had more than enough room in the very charming house. The property itself is large so you can spend all your time outdoors exploring the gorgeous lake. We had great weather on our visit so we took the canoe and paddle boat out for a spin. We also grilled some tasty meals on their wood fired grill! Such a treat!! It was a bit chilly outside so getting to use the wood burning stove inside made the cottage that much better! The open concept living/kitchen/dining is great for entertaining! Our group loved the simplicity of this property. It was a perfect stop on our NY mountain adventure. Thanks again to our lovely hosts for showing us around the property and providing all we could ever need! Your home is truly lovely and we hope to be back soon.
Cross-country ski, ice skate, snow shoe, bike, hike, walk, swim, fish, canoe on your own private 25 acre lake - all in your back yard!
