Reviewer Comments:

This was the perfect house for our son's wedding weekend! Everything was super clean when we arrived; even the porches and drive were blown off. The dock was a great place for our boat and hanging out with family and friends. The fact that it was pet friendly made it even better. Its' central location on the IOP is also a plus. Very impressed overall. Thanks Island Realty!

Great Location But...MOSQUITOS

  • 3 of 5

This is the second time staying at this rental and the house is clean and well-maintained. The location is perfect and the dock/floating dock on Hamlin Creek are perfect for days spent fishing. (Which is mostly what my family does when we go.) There were only two "downsides" to this house...but one of them was enough to make us consider somewhere else for next year's trip.

First - it was kept fairly cool in the house (73-74 degrees) but there are no throw blankets in the house to cover up if chilly. We had to bring out our beach towels when we got chilly while watching a movie on a rainy day.

Second - the mosquitos at this property are almost unbearable. We had to douse ourselves and our dog in DEET just to walk the dog. We couldn't utilize the porch, swings or chairs outsides because the mosquitos were absolutely horrendous. We avoided opening and shutting our car doors when possible because we got a ton of them inside the car. Down at the dock, the breeze kept the bugs at bay but it was impossible to enjoy the yard and outdoor area of the house because of the mosquitos. Even with bug spray I came back with bites all over my body. I realize mosquitos are common and normal especially in the lowcountry, but there has got to be something that they could do to help.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments. Unfortunately, mosquitos are a part of the natural habit for South Carolina, and they have been abnormally prevalent this year. The city does spray every couple weeks on the island, but it has not seemed to help this year as much as years past. We will also inform the owners of the property to make sure they have extra blankets on hand in the future.

Reviewer Comments:

The staff at Island Realty was very easy to deal with and very helpful answering questions and providing information before arrival. The property, as evident in the photo has a completely unkept/maintained yard-had been like that for years. There had been a storm just before our arrival, but the house next door was free of any and all debris, so it could have been taken care of even if someone had just used a leaf blower to clear the entrances would have been an improvement. We arrived an hour early, at 3 pm, but were unable to access the property until 4 pm (normal check in time). We spent the first 40 minutes sweeping leaves and debris from the decks and doorways. The floor in the dining area is rotten and you feel like you will fall through if you step on it. Floors in the master bedroom show obvious signs of termite damage. The location of the property is convenient but it is far overpriced for the condition. We had to call maintenance for a plugged drain, and it was quickly resolved but should not be the case on a $3k per week property. The breeze stopped blowing on Thursday of our week and the mosquitoes were so intense that the outside of the property was rendered unusable, I have never seen mosquito infestation of this level. In fairness I am not sure if this is normal for this area or caused by the totally unkept yard area. While we enjoyed the area and the beach being close by, the issues with the house condition and yard area made for a less than suitable experience. While I would deal with Island Realty again, I would not rent this particular property again.

Island realty provided us with a wonderful house and excellent service during our stay. We were in a bind as our intended rental fell through at the last minute -- we showed up in the late afternoon on a Saturday, needing a place to stay. Island realty worked with us and provided a wonderful house. During our week they provided excellent service. The house is very well appointed and so conveniently located. so nice and comfortable and clean. We will definitely return in future.

This was the perfect spot for our family, especially since we have three teenagers with different interests. We could kayak along with the dolphins all the way to the ocean or around the creek's islands, we could take a short walk to the beach or to get ice cream and browse the cute shops nearby, or we could swim off the dock in the backyard. We loved it, and will definitely be back. This is our new favorite place to stay on IOP!
