Come and enjoy this rare combination of vintage charm and modern amenities with 200 ft. of expansive walkout water frontage. Located on a quiet narrow paved lane that curves along the lake and makes for lovely morning or evening strolls, the cottage's quaint front porch welcomes you into a main floor that opens out to high ceilings, hardwood floors, and gorgeous views of the lake. The spacious, fully-stocked country kitchen with modern appliances flows into the living room with granite and stone fireplace and comfortable oversized leather furniture. You'll have exclusive use of the lakeside yard, dock, and boat slip, and an easy-access boat launch is adjacent to property. Enjoy striking sunrise, sunset and night sky views as you grill out on the lakeside patio with fire pit and beautifully tiled picnic table. Play horseshoes, badminton, or croquet in the huge yard that's fenced in to keep your kids and/or pets safe (as long and they don't swim away!). If you need anything, your hosts are right next door in the caretaker's cabin, otherwise your privacy will be respectfully maintained.
That's just the house! Then there's the lake itself and all the water activities you can enjoy on it, the Ludington State Park that just a short boat- or car-ride away, and it's just a quick 15-minute drive into downtown Ludington for excellent shopping, dining, and other tourist attractions.
Your hosts Will & Laurie (and their dogs Bruno & Mona) welcome you!
Laura Lyons & Will Rappman purchased this cottage in 1976
Laurie and her parents moved from the Chicago area into this lovely home in 1976 when Laurie 12 years old, and she lived here until she graduated high school. In the 90s Laurie moved back to the area with her fiance Will, they got married in the yard by the water, and eventually inherited the home. With a growing family they added on the upstairs level, but once it was just the two of them again, they realized they could share their love of their home with others by renting it out weekly and staying in what used to be called the 'guest cottage' next door (now renamed it the 'caretaker's cabin'). Will and Laurie hope to see you soon!
I will make this an objective truthful review. First of all the cottage is very nice, one of the best we've rented. The location is top shelf and all the extra entertainment items are very cool (horse shoes, Bacce ball, grille deck and bar, etc.).
The owners do live 15ft. away which initially I thought would be really nice, after day 1 not so cool. You are renting their home so you will be very closely monitored how you use it, hopefully it is within their standards. We rented a "house" to be able to use it as I would use my "house" otherwise I would rent a smaller cottage, that being said we invited our family for a Sunday picnic, (the only weekend day available). We had 17 adults and children for a couple of hours during the day and all had a great time, only 7 of us stayed the night. Monday morning I approached Will letting him know we used 3 more pieces of wood than the allotted purchasable bundles he had available-------He began with 20 minutes of an out of body rant accusing me lying to his wife about how many people we would have on the property (we rented it a year ago so have an accurate itinerary of your projected use and guests), abusing the septic system by flushing too much (he was counting the refreshments we were consuming), running the air conditioners when he thought we shouldn't (they were running when we showed up), leaving lights on he felt were not needed (switches in the house turn on lights at opposite ends even outside) etc. etc. Most of his requests were valid just presented like a 12 year old and could have started with a tiny bit of professionalism, six of the evenings we had 5 occupants so abuse was not our intent and we made as many corrections as we could.
With all the odd beginnings we did have a grand week and I hope this review is helpful to others. Mr. Will should reconsider renting his home, there are better ways to just make money.
The Craftsman Cottage met all of our expectations and more. It was clean and well maintained, and the owner was prompt in providing assistance when needed. We were comfortable with the furnishings, and all fixtures and appliances are up to date. It is a great location to enjoy the state park and surrounding area!
An outstanding place to spend a quiet week on Hamlin Lake. The cottage (really a large home) was everything we had hoped for and then some. Both Will and Laura were terrific. Will even got in the water to help launch our boat and dragged it around to the dock. That is service!
We live in Iowa but our family is from the Ludington area and we have been there many times over the years. While the numerous things to do in the area were familiar it is always a treat to experience them again and again. We did spend quite a bit of time just relaxing by the water at the cottage and enjoying lakefront living at its very best. Our daughter and grand children from Arizona were unable to join us this time. We did make our reservation for the same week for next year. Cannot wait. Once again, thank you Will and Laura for a great time.
We loved our week at the Craftsman cottage on Hamlin Lake. This year we had 7 adults a newborn and two dogs. The cottage was accommodating for everyone. When we arrived the cottage was very clean and showed no sign at all that pets were allowed. It is so hard to leave our pets at home so we very much appreciate that we can bring them along. We had lots of fires, grilling, boating and playing cards at night. We love taking the boat over to the sand dunes across the lake. We all highly recommend this cottage and have already booked for next year!~
This was one of the best vacation properties we have ever rented, Will and Laurie could not have been any nicer or more helpful. The cottage was comfortable and large, had nice appliances and all the kitchen items we needed. The big leather couch got a thumbs up from our 6' 5"son and 6'8"son-in-law for sneaking in naps. Not having to haul a pack and play crib or high chair for an 8 month old was also a great convenience. The yard and lakeside area could not have been better, had lots of campfires, great views of the sunsets, docking for the boat. I think our only suggestion would be for a few small lights on the deck stairs. We had a wonderful week and are seriously thinking of returning next summer if we can coordinate everyone's schedules.
We stayed at The Craftsman Cottage on Hamlin Lake last week and had a fantastic vacation week. The owners of the cottage, Will and Laura, are wonderful to work with and the cottage is absolutely beautiful and was in perfect order when we got there. The kitchen has everything that you could possibly ask for to prepare whatever type of meal you would like. Both of the bathrooms are spacious and nicely decorated. Our favorite part of the cottage is the beautiful view of Hamlin Lake and the comfortable area that Will and Laura have provided down by the water with the grills (both gas and propane), a nice sitting area, and the fire pit which is great for evening bonfires. Our family enjoyed the fantastic fishing in Hamlin Lake, evening cook outs, comfortable living room with two beautiful leather chairs and a leather sofa, wonderful walks to the local light houses, a great hike in the State Park through the sand dunes, beach time at the State Park in town, and some awesome sunsets. For the past 16 years, we have spent a week's vacation in Ludington and have stayed at three different locations. The Craftsman Cottage is by far the nicest home that we have stayed at and absolutely love everything about it. Thanks Will and Laura for sharing your beautiful home with our family.
