Maui will welcome you!
90% of our beautiful island was not in the affected fire zone – so please COME VISIT!
You’ll be greeted with warmest ‘aloha’ and your dollars will go towards rebuilding what was lost in Lahaina.
★Jump-start your journey along "The Road To Hana" and relish the convenience of our prime location, allowing you to stay ahead of the crowds and truly savor the experience!
Aloha and welcome to Star Lookout, your ideal Maui retreat situated at the beginning of the ROAD TO HANA! Our stunning garden cabin provides a tranquil escape surrounded by the lush greenery and natural beauty of Maui. Whether you're here for a romantic escape or a family vacation, Star Lookout offers a magical haven away from the stresses of daily life. Immerse yourself in the natural surroundings of the tropical jungle and wake up to the tranquil sounds of nature. With convenient access to grocery stores and dining options just 15-20 minutes away, Star Lookout is the perfect base for exploring the island while also providing a peaceful and rejuvenating retreat.
Situated on Maui's spectacular north shore, this fairy-tale hideaway is the ideal honeymoon retreat ... We greet you with gorgeous tropical fruit & flower arrangements, some welcome goodies in the fridge, candles, chocolates and, of course, your own private hot tub set at exactly the right temperature!
AND we are organic/ green/ sustainably run - you'll even get to say 'aloha' to our chickens, which give spectacularly yellow eggs! (On that note, please also know that we are a SMOKE FREE property).
This is the 'real' Maui ... it feels far away from tourist crowds, yet is only a 15 minute trip to the nearest great restaurant or grocery store. So lovely to come "home" at the end of a day ... and sometimes, you'll probably just to stay "home" right here, and relax! Perhaps you'll "eat in", or watch the full moon rise from the coconut grove ... as you soak in your own private hot tub ...
Our location is ideal for exploring the whole island - but you don't have to stay in a crowded tourist area to do it ... 20 mins to Paia or Makawao, 1 3/4 hours to Hana, 70 mins to Lahaina, 45 mins to Kihei, 1 1/2 hrs up to the top of Haleakala etc. Maui is small enough so that you can stay in one place and have the whole island at your fingertips!
You'll have access to our beautiful 44 ft free-form 'jungle' swimming pool (shared with an occasional other guest - you rarely see anyone around) ... you'll have your own private hot tub, lanais, barbecue ... self-catering for your meals ... gather organic fruit ... but, most of all, you'll have access to serenity, privacy and relaxation ... This is the perfect place to bring your sweetie for a spontaneous romantic getaway!
Our guests love their privacy - and so do we. But we're always available 24/7 by cell phone for questions/ emergencies (hopefully none!) etc and are more than happy to recommend sights, restaurants etc.
Huelo is where 'real' people live ... it's a 'real' neighborhood nestled out here in what was once jungle. This is the nature side of the island, with a cool trade wind most of the year - and yes, you'll see a few geckos which look like small lizards. They're 'mo'o' and considered good luck - completely harmless. People drive slowly along our small country road and for those who would like a little exercise, a sunset walk up our road to the Hana Highway is truly exquisite.
No public transit - you'll definitely need a car!
We're very different from a hotel! FREE wifi and guest laundry and parking ... no extra hidden costs.
Also note: we don't do daily maid service, but are happy to supply fresh linens, cleaning supplies etc and we also have a guest laundry for you to use (free).
Our beautiful freeform 'jungle' pool is shared - though you rarely see anyone there as most people are out exploring the island during the day. PRIVATE hot tub, barbecue, lanais etc.
We always take our cue from our guests! We know you value your privacy, as do we - but we're always available by cell# if you need anything.
We also have other listings with AIRBNB:
"Rainbow Lookout, Airbnb Maui" "Haleakala Cottage, Airbnb Maui" "The Lookout House Airbnb, Maui" "Ocean Lookout Airbnb, Maui" (These are all on the same property!)
This region of the island is an outdoor paradise. There are so many things to do in Maui, and all of them can be accessed from our property. You will be minutes away from beaches, jungles, waterfalls, restaurants, and state parks. Everything you need to make the most of a trip to Hawaii.
Here is a list of some of our favorite places nearby: ★Jungle Zipline Maui - HI (7 minutes) ★Twin Falls Maui Waterfall (10 minutes) ★Colleen's at the cannery (19 minutes) ★Freshies Maui Restaurant (27 minutes) ★Pa’ia and Makawao Towns for shopping/dining/beaches (20 minutes) ★Garden of Eden Arboretum & Botanical Garden (30 minutes) ★Ho’okipa Beach Park (23 minutes) ★Haleakalā National Park (1hr 35 minutes)
We're very much a 'local style' neighborhood where people are relaxed, friendly and into the organic lifestyle. ★ Please drive along our small local road very SLOWLY (10 mph or less) as we like to 'blend' into our local neighborhood and be respectful to our neighbors.
We're a jumping off point to our three small local towns - Haiku (15 mins to restaurants & groceries), Paia (a quaint beach town with a modern, fun vibe), and Makawao (a 'paniolo' / cowboy town with a unique Hawaiian flair). Then, of course ... you have golden beaches, giant sea turtle resting places, tide pools, boogie-boarding ... hiking the crater ... exploring the winery, the lavender farm, the goat farm (Surfing Goat Dairy - how cool is that?) ... the famous 'road to Hana' with all its riches ... waterfalls ... bamboo forests ... Maui's beauty will take your breath away. We think it's the most romantic island in the world (and we've lived here for 26 years!
This area is considered Maui’s “North Shore” and is full of lots of boutique shops, restaurants, farmers' markets, and local jewelers. No matter where you wander you are sure to get the full island experience and find something for the whole family.
You will need a car! We recommend a medium clearance vehicle as our gravel road occasionally gets bumpy after rains. (I drive a Prius. How bad can it be???) You'll only need AWD or 4WD if you're going up to Polli Polli State forest.
The North Shore of Maui is something we like to think of as 'the real Maui' - no hotels, no crowded beaches - just Maui, our beautiful island. But it's only a 20 minute drive to the local grocery store, or to the nearest beach, or to relaxed 'local style' restaurants.
We have geckos! We are a totally organic property, so don't spray. Instead, we use cedar oil and pyrethrum, treating regularly every 2 months. But geckos are a fact of life in the tropics, so be prepared to share your space.
Again, please note: WE HAVE NO TV RECEPTION - but we do have great wifi and you can tune into Netfix on the TV set provided, or on your laptop.
We make the security and privacy of our guests a priority and as such request that only registered guests use our facilities. If you would like non-registered guests to visit you while you are here, please make arrangements in advance of your arrival. (We may not always say yes - especially in times of Covid). Mahalo.

This is an incredible home base for everything special Maui has to offer. On site laundry makes it homey and comfortable leg of any long vacation. Some great local food within a quick 5-15 minute drive and major cities/towns within 20-30 minutes.

Great host, amazing location and views. This place is like its own little resort without all the hustle and bustle of resort life. We loved the privacy and quiet nights and the cliff walk is breathtaking ! So clean and well maintained that we are already looking to book it again !

My friends and I stayed for a girl's weekend and wanted peace and tranquility. We had a fantastic time and Kai was outstanding before and throughout our stay! The extra touch of welcome goodies and Aloha throughout our stay was terrific. As was the hot tub, perfect for sore muscles after our Haleakala hike!

Bless you, Delores! That hot tub is THE BEST after hiking Haleakala, right??? :)S
If you're looking for a little hideaway outside of the hustle and bustle this is the place for you. My husband and I loved it here and would come back again. But if you're looking to be close to restaurants and away from chickens that start crowing before the sun rises you may want to look elsewhere.
We had an absolute wonderful time in the Rainbow Lookout. The welcoming details and the way the cottage was prepared for our visit was beyond belief. Fresh eggs and awesome bread in the fridge made my wife want to make breakfast every day! The property itself is wonderful and so lush. Plenty of privacy and a great space. It was very windy and rainy while we visited but I think that actually made it more fun! Owner is very responsive, hot tub was great, plenty of laundry facilities, I could go on - just everything was exceptional!

We love 'exceptional'!!! Mahalo, Carl! Do come back again, ok? :)Sharyn
Exceptionally clean & well cared for by obviously conscientious hosts. Light and airy wood-framed cottage w/ unusual layout surrounded by lush, mature landscaping. No real kitchen to speak of but large 3-door fridge w/ ice maker, kitchen sink, dishwasher & assortment of countertop appliances, plus a 2-burner gas BBQ grill outside (w/ a roof over it).
Definitely off the beaten path; about 25 minutes east of Paia in a non-tourist area. Great place to just go and chill out.

"Chill" is what it's all about here, Ray, right? :):):) Sharyn
Enjoyed being in the middle of the road to Hāna, close to the Twin Falls. We drove the road to Hana starting at 5am, we are on eastern US time, which was nice to see the sunrise and have no traffic. We first visited the black sand beach. Hiked the Pīpīwai trail and headed back. Stopped in Keanea at Kōkī beach for the huli huli chicken lunch which was fantastic and so gourmet! Although there was a sprinkle every day, we avoided getting wet pretty easily. It only lasts a few minutes most of the time! I appreciated being able to do laundry since I packed light. The property was cute and well maintained. The treats and flowers upon arrival felt really special. And I enjoyed the chickens (felt like home) despite the roosters wake up call. Chicken are everywhere in Maui!! Thank you for making our time in Maui special.
An unbelievable gem, given my criteria in identifying a suitable place to stay on Maui. Yes, I like nice beaches, but I am far more interested in staying at a place away from the crowds, low density, discreet, lush and which hearkens a bit back to old Hawaii. This place checks all the boxes. During our stay, it was often difficult to tell if anyone else was staying there with us. The pool was empty every time we went there, and it was refreshing to come back from a daily excursion and take a cool dip. The beds were comfortable and we were able to cook most everything we wanted to in the kitchen. The hot tub was an extra bonus - it was clean and worked flawlessly. On top of all that, and probably best of all, our host Sharyn was absolutely wonderful, warm, very attentive and communicative to our inquiries, yet completely out of sight, to the extent that we invited her over to chat a bit one evening. All in all, a perfect stay, and a place I would definitely return to when in Maui again!

It was indeed a hot year this year, Sam! The trade wind had the temerity to drop! (But hopefully, when you come back, we'll have the option of air conditioning for you - working on it as we speak!) :)Sharyn
The cottage was a very lovely and private place to stay. The best Hawaiian rainforest experience possible without having to live in a tent. Easy off season drive to the beaches. Loved it and would stay again.

"Aloha" Mark - just a year since we've seen you. Happy New Year and, of course, we look forward to your return! :)Sharyn
Wonderful, peaceful paradise. If you've stayed in Lahaina or Kaanapali and were horrified by the overcrowding and sterility, this place is the remedy. Spotlessly clean when we arrived and SO MANY cute touches. You might see some ants or lizards inside...but that's how it should be in Hawaii! The pool is wonderful and the property was incredibly cool. We didn't have any problems without a full kitchen - there is a hot plate and microwave etc.
All in all - highly recommend this place!!!

I feel so lucky to have discovered this beautiful enclave on Maui. I stayed in the Rainbow House for a week and loved every moment spent there. The grounds are beautiful—impeccably kept with a special water feature to enjoy in the morning with my coffee. The house felt so very private and I especially loved star gazing from the hot tub at night. I was impressed with the cleanliness of the space and the charming little details throughout. I felt so welcomed on the day I arrived. Sharyn was attentive, ensuring that I had everything I needed as well as offering advice about the dining in the area. The kitchen was well-equipped with what I needed to cook at "home". When I need another respite from the bustle of Honolulu, I will most certainly visit Huelo Point Lookout again.

Private retreat in tropical environment
We enjoyed the remote cottage in the tropical environment very much. The cottage is very cosy with huge private garden (hammock between two coconut trees!), private hot tub and outdoor shower -- we loved it although there is an indoor shower as well. The kitchen was very clean and was well equipped with extraordinarily high-quality equipment (great). The covered outdoor stove was nice and kept cooking odors out of the building. On arrival we found all rooms perfectly decorated with fresh flowers, white wine, bread, eggs from their own chickens, etc in the refridgerator, and a fruit basket in the kitchen. The dining table was nicely prepared. Guests are invited to pick bananas which were grown in the garden. The host Sharyn is very friendly and helpful. The cottage lies in a remote area, you have to drive approx. 30 min on the winding Hana highway to reach Pa'ia. The famous dining restaurant Mama's Fish House and the surfer hot spot Ho'opika are about 20 min by car from the cottage. We booked some boat trips from Lahaina which needs a drive of about 75-90 min, depending on the traffick which was high in February. Nevertheless, we liked the privacy far away from the huge hotel complexes at the other coast, as well as the familiar and warm atmosphere.

PERFECTION to the MAX!
This was the exact place that my husband and I were looking for. We wanted to escape to Maui, but so many of the accommodates are large hotels are condos.
When we arrived the cottage to set with welcome treats and a lovely bottle of wine. The property is beautiful, with a great pool. We were told that there were other guest during our stay but we did not see anyone but once and had the pool to ourselves!.
We love listening to the night storms roll in on the tin roof, and wake to the beautiful sunrises. We will definitely be back!!! Maybe even making it a family trip renting out a couple of the cottages/house.

I love it when guests are totally appreciative of our beautiful surroundings and our 'away-from-it-all' feel! Thank you both, too, for leaving the cottage so beautiful when you left ... and please, do come back for a special anniversary!

About the host
Hosted by Sharyn
Jeff is a retired dentist - now he specializes in metaphysical counselling, and is expanding his hypnosis practice into Subconscious Training. (Previously he used these skills in working with phobic patients in dentistry - but these skills have much wider applications and he's having fun expanding them).
Sharyn is an actress, writer, speech therapist, permaculturalist & interior decorator. At the moment, she's enjoying theatre improv and working on a one woman monologue show, which she'll perform in a few months.
We have one young son, Kai Nalu, aged 17. And also an older son, Adrian, who lives in England with his lovely German wife, Antje and their 2 totally cute kids. We're too young to have grandchildren! aaaggghh!!! But what a treat!
Why they chose this property
Huelo is off the beaten path, wild and wonderful. Who could resist? We have a constant trade wind, so we never 'bake' like the west side ... and here the landscape is lush, so it's easy to do our organic gardening. We wanted a Maui dream escape, but also wanted some conveniences, and these we have aplenty!
