Jeff is a retired dentist - now he specializes in metaphysical counselling, and is expanding his hypnosis practice into Subconscious Training. (Previously he used these skills in working with phobic patients in dentistry - but these skills have much wider applications and he's having fun expanding them). Sharyn is an actress, writer, speech therapist, permaculturalist & interior decorator. At the moment, she's enjoying theatre improv and working on a one woman monologue show, which she'll perform in a few months. We have one young son, Kai Nalu, aged 17. And also an older son, Adrian, who lives in England with his lovely German wife, Antje and their 2 totally cute kids. We're too young to have grandchildren! aaaggghh!!! But what a treat!
Sharyn purchased this Cottage in 1992
Why Sharyn chose Huelo
Huelo is off the beaten path, wild and wonderful. Who could resist? We have a constant trade wind, so we never 'bake' like the west side ... and here the landscape is lush, so it's easy to do our organic gardening. We wanted a Maui dream escape, but also wanted some conveniences, and these we have aplenty!
What makes this Cottage unique
Privacy and relaxation are things that are priceless. So many people find they rediscover those things, when they stay with us. Romance too, of course - that comes naturally when you've re-created that space for just for yourselves. This is the natural part of Maui - not 'manicured' or 'manufactured' to be part of a Hollywood image. Here, you discover the 'real' Maui - exotic ... waterfalls ... bamboo forests ... soaring ocean cliffs ... nesting seabirds ... wild ocean ... what we dream of, when we say 'Hawaii'. Here, you'll feel 'remote', but still enjoy the conveniences of having access to 3 small towns (Pa'ia, Makawao and Haiku) for easy grocery pickup, P.O., delightful boutiques & fun restaurants.

This place is amazing. They have everything you could ever need and it simply breathtaking here. We can't say enough how much we enjoyed our stay. From the privacy to the views to the hot tub and everything in between. The house manager Lori is so kind and helpful, she left us all kinds of goodies when we arrived. Thank you for making our honeymoon unforgettable.
Awww, you guys were a joy! It makes us happy when guests love this part of the island as much as we do! Lori & Sharyn :)
A romantic paradise ! We had so much fun, you could never leave the property and have a relaxing vacation. There is a walk to the ocean cliffs that is pastoral and so beautiful! Also the pool is a treat. The most unusual place I have been ever. The cottage had hyacinths everywhere and beautiful bouquets of Hawaiin flowers. The grounds so special😀 . The hosts especially Sharon are great! She welcomed us and told us goodbye. She was very informative and interesting!
Also wine , bananas, chocolate, banana bread waiting for us when we arrived. Also watch the sun rise from most comfortable king size bed! We definitely hope to repeat this experience!
We are located in what was once a thriving Hawaiian settlement area known as 'Huelo' ... which is now considered to be part of 'Haiku', encompassing waterfalls, hills, bamboo forests, soaring cliffs - in short, the 'wilder' side of Maui. We have an 'off-the-beaten-path' feel, and the last mile of road to get to us is curvy, yet we're only 15 mins away from fabulous restaurants & a convenient local grocery store! 20 mins get you to the little surfing/windsurfing town of Paia, or to the old 'cowboy' ('paniolo') town of Makawao. (Come to our famous July 4th rodeo and main street parade!) From here, you can explore the famous 'road to Hana'; the summit of Mt Haleakala; the Tedeschi winery; the Ali'i Lavender Farm and many, many more unique places - not the usual 'touristy' fare. But if you're set on doing some of the tourist fun stuff (and who isn't?) then it's only a 45 minute drive to Kihei or Ma'alaea, 55 mins to Wailea, 90 mins to Lahaina. Maui is small, so you can stay in one place and pretty much have access to the whole island. Don't forget that this is the rainier side of the island - No Rain, No Rainbows, right? That's why you'll live amongst the lush jungles and bamboo forests of our spectacular scenery. That being said, Maui has 13 different microclimates. So, if you wake up in the morning and it's raining in Huelo ... then 15 mins down the road somewhere you'll probably bump into a completely different climate! We cater for the independent, 'alternative' kind of traveler ... people who like to prepare their own meals and explore the island at their own leisure ... people who appreciate having a guest laundry (no charge) and wifi (also no charge) and hassle-free parking (no charge, naturally) ... people who really enjoy 'living' in a place and getting to know the 'real', authentic spirit of our beautiful island. It's easy to spoil yourselves, of course. We have masseuses and in-house chefs which can be arranged (in advance please) - but do please be aware that we don't do daily housekeeping or linen changes (unless by special request, at an extra charge). And ... did I mention that our property has been 'eco' and 'green' since 1992? No nasty chemicals here! That being said, please don't freak out if you see a gecko, or an occasional ant or even (gasp!) a flying cockroach. We're in the jungle, remember? Most of the time our beautiful cedar oil maintenance sprays do a great job, but every so often you'll see a critter. That's why you come to Hawaii, right?
