a romantic retreat :)

Bedrooms 1
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 4 nights

About the property

Sweet studio jungle hideaway, just for two.

Haleakala Cottage is a darling studio cottage tucked into the corner of our tropical gardens with hot tub views of the summit of Mt. Haleakala -a long dormant volcano. We are a fully licensed and legally permitted B&B which means that your reservation is always secure with us (Permit #BBPH 2009/0015, TAT/GE #W40445368-01). The cottage features a luxurious California King bed, fully equipped kitchen with a 5-burner gas stove, front and back lanais with a private hot tub, hot and cold outdoor shower, charcoal barbecue (bring your own charcoal), a towel warmer to keep your big, fluffy towels fluffy and dry, a shared guest laundry and 44 foot free form pool. Wifi is available as is a TV and DVD player, but no TV service or cable allows you to truly get away from it all.

Huelo Point Lookout is located on Maui's unspoiled north shore and is ideally situated for exploring Haiku, Hana, Makawao, Kula, Mt Haleakala, the bamboo forests, waterfalls and our gorgeous unspoiled beaches (Ho’okipa, Baldwin, Kanaha, Mama’s & Baby Beaches – come surf, windsurf and kitesurf!).

We have four private cottages on our property with a shared pool, but it never feels crowded. Each cottage has its own private hot tub. Our cottages are surrounded by two organic orchards which supply fresh lemons, limes, tangerines, papayas, avocados, macadamia nuts, bananas, star fruit, guavas, coconuts, soursop, and passionfruit. You will find a gorgeous basket of our freshest fruits waiting for you upon arrival and possibly even a fresh cut coconut chilling in your fridge! Grab the coconut and head out to the lanai - let your cares just melt away! This is the 'real Hawaii'.....

Huelo Point Lookout is located about 45 minutes from Kahului airport. We are 15 to 20 minutes from shopping and restaurants. You might want to stop at Mana Foods in Pa'ia on your way through and grab the essentials for your stay - Mana has great organic choices and they have been a local favorite for 30 years!

Terrific cottage with outside shower surrounded by shell ginger!

  • 5 of 5

Pretty, delightful, colorful, and thoughtful extras! Lori was very helpful and allowed us to drop-off perishable food prior to check-in, the crew put our groceries in the refrigerator and had a colorful pineapple and bananas garnished with a bright red hibiscus flower waiting for us when we finally checked in. The bed was very comfortable and the kitchen had all we needed to cook and relax. The place is sparkling clean. My favorite feature is the beautiful indigo blue outdoor shower. Beach chairs are available for use and the complex has a great walking path between private property to view the ocean. Comfortable and attractive cottage away from the crowds and tourists.

Jungle Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Had a wonderful 4 night stay in the Haleakala cottage. Wish I could have stayed longer. The studio size was perfect for the two of us. There was attention to detail. Everything you could need in the kitchen, with a wonder gas stove. Lots of plush towels. Loved the outdoor shower and hot tub. Fresh flowers decorating the inside of the cottage. Wine, fresh farm eggs, fruit and rustic whole grain bread awaited us when we arrived. Very private but we knew the property manager was near by if we needed anything. Perfect location to Hana, Upcountry, and I’ao Valley. Can’t wait to go back.

A Great Retreat in the Heart of Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Wow, what can I say about this spot. This was easily the best decision I have made in selecting a place to stay. If you are wanting to stay away from all the touristy areas this is the place. Driving up to the cottage is the best part, along with the great landscape, the view and pool area.

This is a very welcoming cottage with fresh fruit upon arrival. We highly recommend bringing your own food as cooking there is well worth it. When you have a chance walk out to the cliffs and enjoy the sunrise, it is breathtaking. The outdoor shower is definitely a unique feature of the cottage, but the longer time you stay the more you get used to it. With how hot it can get it was a refreshing addition. The hot tub was also very welcoming and relaxing especially being secluded. Enjoy sleeping with both screen doors open at night, allows for a great breeze. But the rain can come quick so be aware.

It was nice being so close to the Hana Highway (the fun parts of it). The drive to Hana was easy since we didn't have to leave so soon. Many secret stops along the way that the book inside the cottage will tell you.

You are also very close to Paia (about 15-20 mins) which is a great little town to explore. Since my wife had never been to Maui we toured the entire island, but honestly this place is really meant for people not wanting to go very far. Still our time there was amazing.

This last part is for the staff, very welcoming and helpful in addressing our needs. Laundry services available which helped us with towels and such. We did get to meet Sharyn (owner) and she was a delight, very friendly and talked for about an hour.

As you can tell my wife and I absolutely hated this place. But we would recommend this to any honeymooners or couples that want to be away from it all but still enjoy what paradise has to offer. There are other places on the property to rent and we may do so in the future and bring more of our family. Or we may keep it to ourselves.

Wonderful cottage experience!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this property, it's so different from west Maui. We thoroughly enjoyed the hot tub and outdoor shower. Very nice fruit, wine, and fresh eggs upon arrival. Great walk to the overlook and wonderful to be further down the Hana Highway to better experience Hana. We had one night without any cross breeze, which made for a hot night, but the fan helped tremendously-- and clearly no one's fault but trade winds! Would stay there again, and may look into some of the other cabins. Thanks so much, we loved it!

Such a lovely place off the beaten path yet close to Hana Highway

  • 5 of 5

So peaceful and lovely. Enjoyed the solitude and natural beauty of the area. Place was exactly as described with wonderful touches. A chilled bottle of wine, fresh eggs and bread, wonderful. Everyone should experience the "real Maui" away from resorts. It's wonderful.

About Sharyn

Sharyn is an actress, writer, speech therapist, permaculturalist & interior decorator. At the moment, she's enjoying theatre improv and working on a one woman monologue show, which she'll perform in a few months.

Jeff is a retired dentist - now he specializes in metaphysical counseling, and is expanding his hypnosis practice into Subconscious Training. (Previously he used these skills in working with phobic patients in dentistry - but these skills have much wider applications and he's having fun expanding them).

We have one young son, Kai Nalu, aged 19, who was born here in Maui. He's a heck of a surfer! We also have an older son, Adrian, who lives in England with his lovely German wife, Antje and their 2 totally cute kids. We're too young to have grandchildren! aaaggghh!!! But what a treat!

Sharyn purchased this cottage in 1992

Why Sharyn chose Huelo

Huelo is off the beaten path, wild and wonderful. Who could resist? We have a constant trade wind, so we never 'bake' like the west side ... and here the landscape is lush, so it's easy to do our organic gardening. We wanted a Maui dream escape, but also wanted some conveniences, and these we have aplenty!

What makes this cottage unique

Privacy and relaxation are things that are priceless. So many people find they rediscover those things, when they stay with us. Romance too, of course - that comes naturally when you've re-created that space for just for yourselves. This is the natural part of Maui - not 'manicured' or 'manufactured' to be part of a Hollywood image. Here, you discover the 'real' Maui - exotic ... waterfalls ... bamboo forests ... soaring ocean cliffs ... nesting seabirds ... wild ocean ... what we dream of, when we say 'Hawaii'. Here, you'll feel 'remote', but still enjoy the conveniences of having access to 3 small towns (Pa'ia, Makawao and Haiku) for easy grocery pickup, P.O., delightful boutiques & fun restaurants.

Guestbook comments from the owner

He must have because as soon as we got here, it was nowhere to be found.

Gentle trade winds, warm sun and a view of the ocean unobstructed but for the swaying palms and the occasional wandering cow were well beyond our expectations.

This beautiful and private place is the perfect refuge, far away from the cares of home and the party condos in Kihei.

We stayed in both the Haleakala cottage with its lovely outdoor shower and the sliding doors which made us feel as though we were sleeping outside and the Oceanview lookout with such amazing views that it had a lighthouse like feel to it .

Thanks to Sharyn's chickens and herb garden we started each morning with a fresh omelet which we prepared in our great kitchens, followed by bananas from a bunch hanging in the yard.

The owners and staff were so wonderful and this place was so very fine that all our plans to dash off for hiking, biking, and running about just kind of dissolved into a realization that there was really just no better place to be than right here, right now.
