I am retired from home construction and my wife from nursing. We live in Roseville near Saint Paul, MN. We love our stays at Lake Vermilion where we built Jackrabbit Island Cabin on weekends starting in 1991.
We are using the cabin less since our daughter moved to California and think VRBO is a good way to keep it available without selling it.
I like to fish Lake Vermilion and the grand kids swim off the dock and like to be dragged around on water skis or a raft.
In the winter we do volunteer work in Guatemala where we have another home that we also rent through VRBO while we are in Minnesota.
James Cave purchased this cabin in 1990
We bought this place because we wanted very clean water and enough land to be alone.
I love to be able to catch a fish before breakfast and go out again in the evening.
No neighbors stroll over to gab and no loud parties or construction across the street, just birds, squirrels, beaver, and deer.
I am afraid fox got the jackrabbits during the winter.
( Let us know if you see any jackrabbits.)
The nice thing about Lake Vermilion is that there are so many things to do beside fishing and boating. All the facitities of Fortune Bay Casino are 10 minutes away by boat but if you want to be alone this is the special place.
We love campfires in the evening, walks on the trails, and just sitting on the dock watching the lake and the sky. We sit and read in the screen house a lot.
We paddle the canoe around the island for exercise. I also take the canoe over to Trout Lake in the boundary waters once in a while.
This was the best vacation that I have been on in my 39 years of existence. Everything you could possible need was furnished for you and the owner/manager were very accommodating. My family and I enjoyed the beautiful views from the island and the island deer that visited us several times a day. It was so nice to have our own island even if it was only for a week. Thank you to the Cave Family for letting us enjoy this wonderful home.
This is an excellent rental opportunity with everything needed for a secluded vacation get-away. The owners were very easy to deal with and provided all the information and amenities necessary for our vacation. Thanks!
We had a great time at the cabin. We went over Minnesota Walleye Fishing opener weekend May 13-16. The weather was bad (1" of snow the first night and windy) but we still caught Walleye off the dock the first night and every night. We got on the lake the next day and did well fishing. We caught about 24 walleye and released a couple 22 and 23 inch ones. We had a nice fish fry and had some fish to bring home. The cabin is very nice. The wood stove heated the cabin with one log in the fire place all night. The only comment I would have for people that want to stay is the extra beds are upstairs and are accessed by a attic ladder. We had no problem getting up there (50+year old men). The day before we left everyone was saying we should reserve for next year. Very nice to be on your own island. Thank you to the owners for letting us stay.
My wife and I were looking for a last minute getaway. We went for three nights and it was worth the drive from KC. It was very late in the season up there but we got beautiful weather and the trees were in peak color. The cabin was great. From the grill to the kitchen and bathroom everything was in good working order with plenty of supplies. We appreciated the existing games and books on our one rainy day. There was plenty of wood already cut for the indoor stove and outdoor fire pit. The fire pit was perfect with a view of the lake and three benches surrounding it. The island is beautiful with a nicely cleared trail to the back side that has a spectacular view of the lake. It was pleasure meeting Sam the owner the day we arrived. Also James his son was extremely helpful while booking and answered any questions that we had before arrival.
If you are looking for a secluded quiet place this is it.
We didn't go to the casino but went to the marina once. It was a short boat ride and had basic food/drink/bait available.
We had a great time and plan on returning next year and have recommended this place to several people since returning.
Thank you James and Sam for a great time!

My wife and I are big campers and on 7-28-2015 we had our first son which put a hold on our need for the great outdoors. We were looking for something that gave us the solitude of camping with a little more amenities to accommodate a 2 month old. Jack Rabbit Island fulfilled this and much more! It was a great place, easy to find and we had a wonderful time! I would recommend Jack Rabbit Island to anyone who is looking for a peaceful getaway!
We had a group of 4 adult men and a couple dogs stay for most of the week. There were no surprises with the cabin, it's a mix of rustic finishes and good amenities, exactly what we were looking for. We think the cabin is well priced for what you get, nothing fancy but everything you need. We had a great time with nice weather for the most part, it was windy a few days. Fishing was slower than usual even at the summer slow down of August. But we managed to catch a few walleyes, bass, perch and couple Musky strikes. We saw a bear swimming in the lake near the Narrows of Pike Bay. We saw deer on the island, Grouse and Bald Eagles were everywhere. There were tons of raspberries to pick at this time of year so no need to bring any! Sam is fantastic and a very nice fellow. We will likely return hopefully some time.
Be sure to visit the Sudan Iron Mine. It was the first iron mine in Minnesota and its railroad delivered the ore to Two Harbors for loading on ore boats. It is now a museum and a science laboratory studying sub atomic particles.
