Property description

Camp Uncas, on Mohegan Lake near Raquette Lake, New York, is a compound of log and bark-covered dwellings and related structures, built by William West Durant in 1895 and owned by the J.P. Morgan and Margaret Vanderbilt Emerson families for half a century. In 2009 Camp Uncas was designated a National Historic Landmark by the Secretary of the Interior—the highest distinction for the nation’s historic properties. The 16-acre property sits on secluded Mohegan Lake, totally surrounded by the New York State Forest Preserve. There are no other private properties or state facilities on the lake. There are no motorboats. The setting is beautiful, peaceful and secluded.

There are three sections of the camp, each owned by related parties. The owners use Camp Uncas for their personal homes and occasionally allow others to use their buildings. Dr. Howard Kirschenbaum and Mary Rapp's section of the camp, which is available for rental in spring, summer and fall of 2015, includes three of the four most outstanding buildings at Camp Uncas. These three log buildings are among the finest examples of camp architecture and design in the Adirondacks. Beds, dining tables and other furnishings are almost all original rustic furnishings designed for Camp Uncas. Fireplaces are outstanding examples of masonry craftsmanship. All three dwellings are heated for comfortable use in all seasons. The buildings sit about 25-100 feet from the lakeshore. They are described below.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 1976

About the owner: For the past 40 years, I have been active in historic preservation in the Adirondacks, including founding Adirondack Architectural Heritage, the non-profit historic preservation organization for the Adirondack Park; owning or directing Great Camp Sagamore, Camp Uncas, and White Pine Camp, advocating for Camp Santanoni, and writing books and articles on Adirondack architecture, among other activities. In 2011, I received a lifetime achievement award from the Preservation League of New York State. In 2014 my family purchased a new historic camp in the Northern Adirondacks, to which we've moved; so now we are renting Camp Uncas.

Why the Owner Chose Raquette Lake, NY, USA:
Camp Uncas is one of the finest 'Great Camps' of the Adirondacks. It combines exceptional rustic architecture, original furnishings, a comfortable scale and design for living and entertaining, and one of the most peaceful, quiet and serene lakeside settings in the Adirondack Park. It is perfect for family vacations, family reunions, or 4-6 couples who are friends enjoying a vacation together.

The Unique Benefits at this Lodge:
National Landmark-quality rustic architecture. Great swimming, boating, hiking and other recreational activities. Relaxing around beautiful stone fireplaces with family and friends. Large screened porch for outdoor living and dining. Exquisite natural setting. Great privacy but near area cultural opportunities. All the comforts of home.
