Our place is an open air palapa (grass roofed) home overlooking the ocean.
We are located on a 25 acre preserve with 24 other palapas sprinkled around the property. Ours is very private and serene, with one of the best panoramic views of sea and mountains. The palapa is located on Los Chonchos beach, which is one hour south of Puerto Vallarta. It is accessible only by water taxi, which leaves twice daily from Boca de Tomatlan. We have all the comforts of home with a kitchen including refrigerator, freezer, gas-burner cook top, spring fed water. The kitchen is well-stocked with dishes, glasses and utensils. Dining area with hand-hewn table/chairs w seating for four or more. Full bathroom with hot shower, sink, flush toilet. Bedroom has new king sized bed. Amazing views from the deck with hammock and chaise lounge chairs to sunbathe and watch for whales (in season), dolphins and parrots during the day and watch the sunset and incredible starry sky at night. Relax in paradise and go off the grid! The palapa is run by solar power for electricity and propane for the refrigerator/freezer and cook top. Charging station for laptops and cell phones. This is an ideal spot to unplug for a romantic getaway or vacation for the adventure minded. Perfect for relaxing under the sun, snorkeling, swimming, fishing and kayaking. You will have easy access to three beautiful beaches, one nearly a mile long which you will sometimes have all to yourself. There is a hiking trail to the small fishing village of Chimo, two miles from Chonchos. Chimo has an oceanfront restaurant and two small markets. Tired of cooking? There is a restaurant on-site at Chonchos that will serve you three meals a day. Just let Chef Alphonso know what your preferences are! Or order your meal to be delivered to your palapa. Fresh local fish; guacamole made from avocados just picked from the tree! Palapa area has year-round staff (English-speaking) who will help you get settled in upon your arrival and make sure your stay is safe and comfortable.

We are both college professors who love to travel. We are happy to share our little bit of paradise with you.
Dana Britton and Cynthia Daniels purchased this bungalow in 2015
We visited Chonchos in January of 2015 and fell in love with the place. It's beautiful, quiet, and serene, and we really loved being 'off the grid.' We sat on our deck and watched whales and manta rays in the ocean, iguanas on the rocks below, and parrots overhead. The stars at night were like nothing we had ever seen. We loved our vacation so much that we bought our own palapa, and we get back as often as we can.
This was our second time at the Cactus Palapa. Our first trip wasn't long enough, so we decided to go back for a month. It was everything we remembered and more! Daily sightings of at least a dozen whales per day, dolphins, birds, and the never ending sound of the surf. This is NOT a place for someone who has to be busy all the time - this is a place for those who look for relaxation, quiet and "getting away from the rat race". The bed was comfy, with multiple places to sleep in the palapa and relax on the deck. What did we do for a whole month you ask?... we watched the sea, the night sky, hiked to Chimo ( nearby fishing village) for lunch, read books, walked the beach, played triominos, and met the water taxi every morning on the beach with the locals and new arrivals. A little preplanning of your food is necessary for long stays. We restocked our meats in PV after 2 weeks, but most other things are available in Chimo or Yelapa. The water was a little too chilly for snorkeling this time, but there were a few brave souls nonetheless!! Water Taxi access is limited sometimes by the conditions of the ocean. We came home to the cold... missing Mexico already! Looking forward to our next visit.
Thank you Dana and Cyndi! Our trip and the Palapa was simply amazing! Breathtaking views and so peaceful! We will come back for a longer stay next time!
The Cactus palapa and Los Chonchos are where it's at! This was our second year at this beautiful location, and it was even more special this time around. Cactus is so comfortable and in the BEST location! My binoculars got a workout between checking out the birds, the local fishing boats, and the whales. We will definitely be back next year. Thanks again for having such a special place for people like us to experience!
We stayed in Los Chonchos in December for one week.
We were looking to really get away from it all and we got it 100%.
This palapa has definitely one of the best panoramic views of sea.
We watched whales, pelicans and millions of stars from the deck.
We slept to the sounds of the ocean. The beach is empty and you can watch restless crabs digging holes around you or crashing waves to the rocks or read a book.
There is always something going on in the nature around you to observe.
We took excursion to Yelapa and we where happy to go back to Los Chonchos because the beach and streets were packed with tourists.
We enjoyed the hike to Chimos to buy grosherys and eat lunch at Arturos place witch was nice brake from cooking.
I wonted really badly to see Marietas Islands and we were lucky to go there too and enjoy beauty of those Islands and animals. Snorkeling there and seeing all those colorful fish around was definitely pleasure.
In the evening we were watching the sky, talking and playing board games.
All people there are very friendly and helpful.
The weather was just perfect.
Sometimes you don't realize how little you need to be happy.
If you are looking for simplicity and you are open to face unknown and enjoy it go there!
If you rather enjoy many hotel stars with room service and dinner in restaurant with life music by your side stay in Puerto Vallarta.
The taxi driver Jesus was dependable and very helpful.
Thank you very much for letting us stay in your palapa. I am very sorry that took me so long to get back to you.
We will be very happy to come back in the future.
Our stay here was better than could have been imagined!
From Puerto Vallarta, we took a taxi to Boca de Tomatlan, where we had a beer in a beachfront palapa restaurant with our toes in the sand while we waited for our water taxi. The water taxi ride was well over an hour, and we enjoyed the scenery and stops at small towns, communities, and rural homes along the way. Tips for this part of the trip:
- Get pesos before leaving Puerto Vallarta, as there is no ATM in Boca
- There is no pier at Los Chonchos where you disembark, so wear clothes that are okay to get wet. The staff there will help with your luggage (Thank you, Igor!)
- A folded towel or sarong to sit on will help your butt and back on the choppy water taxi ride
When we arrived at Chonchos Beach, the staff helped carry gear and led us to the palapa, just a 5 minute walk from the beachfront. The entire place is open to the sea breeze, with GORGEOUS views, comfortable furniture, an inviting bed, places to hang out in the sun or the shade, and a kitchen with a propane stovetop, fridge/freezer (with some ice), and french press. We had a nearly full moon on our trip, and we stayed up late into the night basking in moonlight for a truly romantic getaway.
Love this place, and we will be back!
We loved our stay! The bungalow was very comfortable and we loved the open air feel. We enjoyed the very private beach, swimming in the ocean, and hiking to Chimo. We loved this property in particular because its location is closer to the big beach (as opposed to the landing beach), it is very quiet and it felt more private. We had a delicious dinner brought in every night. Alfonso is an excellent cook and took into consideration our tastes and preferences. There was plenty of lighting at night to read and enjoy the ocean sounds. Highly recommend!
