Our place is an open air palapa (grass roofed) home overlooking the ocean.
We are located on a 25 acre preserve with 24 other palapas sprinkled around the property. Ours is very private and serene, with one of the best panoramic views of sea and mountains. The palapa is located on Los Chonchos beach, which is one hour south of Puerto Vallarta. It is accessible only by water taxi, which leaves twice daily from Boca de Tomatlan. We have all the comforts of home with a kitchen including refrigerator, freezer, gas-burner cook top, spring fed water. The kitchen is well-stocked with dishes, glasses and utensils. Dining area with hand-hewn table/chairs w seating for four or more. Full bathroom with hot shower, sink, flush toilet. Bedroom has new king sized bed. Amazing views from the deck with hammock and chaise lounge chairs to sunbathe and watch for whales (in season), dolphins and parrots during the day and watch the sunset and incredible starry sky at night. Relax in paradise and go off the grid! The palapa is run by solar power for electricity and propane for the refrigerator/freezer and cook top. Charging station for laptops and cell phones. This is an ideal spot to unplug for a romantic getaway or vacation for the adventure minded. Perfect for relaxing under the sun, snorkeling, swimming, fishing and kayaking. You will have easy access to three beautiful beaches, one nearly a mile long which you will sometimes have all to yourself. There is a hiking trail to the small fishing village of Chimo, two miles from Chonchos. Chimo has an oceanfront restaurant and two small markets. Tired of cooking? There is a restaurant on-site at Chonchos that will serve you three meals a day. Just let Chef Alphonso know what your preferences are! Or order your meal to be delivered to your palapa. Fresh local fish; guacamole made from avocados just picked from the tree! Palapa area has year-round staff (English-speaking) who will help you get settled in upon your arrival and make sure your stay is safe and comfortable.

Dana Britton and Cynthia Daniels purchased this bungalow in 2015
We visited Chonchos in January of 2015 and fell in love with the place. It's beautiful, quiet, and serene, and we really loved being 'off the grid.' We sat on our deck and watched whales and manta rays in the ocean, iguanas on the rocks below, and parrots overhead. The stars at night were like nothing we had ever seen. We loved our vacation so much that we bought our own palapa, and we get back as often as we can.
Our stay here was better than could have been imagined!
From Puerto Vallarta, we took a taxi to Boca de Tomatlan, where we had a beer in a beachfront palapa restaurant with our toes in the sand while we waited for our water taxi. The water taxi ride was well over an hour, and we enjoyed the scenery and stops at small towns, communities, and rural homes along the way. Tips for this part of the trip:
- Get pesos before leaving Puerto Vallarta, as there is no ATM in Boca
- There is no pier at Los Chonchos where you disembark, so wear clothes that are okay to get wet. The staff there will help with your luggage (Thank you, Igor!)
- A folded towel or sarong to sit on will help your butt and back on the choppy water taxi ride
When we arrived at Chonchos Beach, the staff helped carry gear and led us to the palapa, just a 5 minute walk from the beachfront. The entire place is open to the sea breeze, with GORGEOUS views, comfortable furniture, an inviting bed, places to hang out in the sun or the shade, and a kitchen with a propane stovetop, fridge/freezer (with some ice), and french press. We had a nearly full moon on our trip, and we stayed up late into the night basking in moonlight for a truly romantic getaway.
Love this place, and we will be back!
We loved our stay! The bungalow was very comfortable and we loved the open air feel. We enjoyed the very private beach, swimming in the ocean, and hiking to Chimo. We loved this property in particular because its location is closer to the big beach (as opposed to the landing beach), it is very quiet and it felt more private. We had a delicious dinner brought in every night. Alfonso is an excellent cook and took into consideration our tastes and preferences. There was plenty of lighting at night to read and enjoy the ocean sounds. Highly recommend!
My wife and I spent four idyllic days at Casa Catcus Grande in February. I cannot imagine a more relaxed getaway from the stress of working life. No phone. No internet. Just sun, sand and surf without interruption. What a view from the front deck of Dana and Cynthia's palapa! All of Banderas Bay from Puerto Vallarta all the way to the Tres Marietas stretched out before you. We spent many hours just soaking up the vista.
As a birder and photographer, I was keen to see what birds might be found at Los Chonchos. Of the 75 species I counted during our stay, many were seen right from the front deck. These included spectacular views of Common and Short-tailed hawks, Brown Pelicans and Magnificent Frigatebirds soaring at eye-level almost within arm's length! Orange-fronted Parakeets and Golden Vireos frequented the trees around the deck while Military Macaws were heard or seen flying high overhead each day.
The palapa is perfectly situated on a hill overlooking the ocean midway between the two beautiful beaches that are there for the exclusive use of Los Chonchos residents. The palapa is clean, open to the ocean breezes and comes with all of the ammenities one needs. The propane stove top and fridge allowed us to prepare our own meals each day and the electric solar system worked flawlessly providing plenty of recharging power for our Ipads and camera batteries as well as lights each night.
We are already dreaming of our next visit to Los Chonchos.
We could not have been happier with our choice of a vacation destination! Dana was very accommodating and made sure we knew what to expect and what to bring with us. Any time we had a question, she would get right back to us. The palapa was nicely decorated and off the grid with solar power for just about everything. We saw humpback whales just about every day from our deck. There were iguanas, beautiful tropical birds, parrots, woodpeckers, hawks, vultures and iguanas ( to name just a few) easily seen throughout the preserve, without leaving the immediate area! The phone service was spotty at best - but that was fine with us, that was part of the appeal!! We fell asleep every night to the phenomenal sounds of the surf, after watching the stars. The king size bed was super comfy, with a mosquito net for added security. The water at Los Chonchos comes from a spring, we used it every day and never had any issues - although Dana did provide bottled water for those with a sensitive stomach. It was a short walk to both the small and large beaches. We had the large beach to ourselves every day!! The hike to Chimo was somewhat athletic. But once you get there, both Antonio's and Arturo's restaurants serve wonderful food and both will cater party sized meals to your palapa. The water taxi entry and exit can indeed be challenging, depending upon ocean conditions. All in all it was a vacation like no other - we will be back!!
The palapa itself was great. My wife and I enjoyed our time in and around the palapa and community. Pictures don't do it justice.
The airport seems intimidating but we were out in less than 35 minutes. Jesus, the taxi driver we were recommended, was an amazing guide and translator. Sit as far back in the water taxi as possible and expect it to run late. Igor, a resident of Chonchos was very helpful and friendly. He helped load and unload the water taxi every time it came to the arrival beach.
We decided to have Alfonso cook us our dinners for our 8 night stay. They tasted fine but lacked variety. We had the same dinner for the first 3 nights (fish, side of rice and side of vegetables).
People with iguanas in Yelapa are selling more than a picture. Try some Raicilla and the coco loco!
My parents and I spent 5 days at the Casa Cactus over christmas. It was such a lovely place, and just perfectly laid out and equipped for a backcountry-type trip to the wild beaches of Chonchos. The Casa had everything we needed and nothing more- there were about 18 different comfy places to sit and watch the sea, and I slept outside under the stars every night with no problems. The place is clearly well cared for by its owners, and it seems to be among the nicest of the Palapas on the beach. We spent our days reading, eating, and grabbing our binoculars to look at the whales, flying rays, dolphins, and many species of birds that were frolicking all around us. When we were there the waves were quite rough, which limited our swimming and snorkelling options, but in calmer times the snorkelling should be quite good- we saw many species of fish and a large spotted ray on our one successful expedition. Dana was very nice and helpful in answering our questions prior to the stay. A great experience overall, especially suited to those looking to skip the tourists and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
