A peaceful finish to our lovely vacation.
It was nice to see another aspect of the island. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone who was looking to get away from the busy resort areas yet still have access to the beautiful beaches of Kohala.
A great place to stay and hit the NW beaches on the Big Island.
The location is great for the beaches. You have access to a private road that goes directly from the ranch down to the coast. Then you have several beaches including good snorkeling within minutes, both north and south. The ranch is quiet and peaceful with gorgeous views when the weather is clear. You can see the Kona-Kailua coastline to the south, Maui and the N Kohala coast to the north and all three main volcanos to the east and south. You are also only 45 minutes from the Kona airport. You have access on the Kahua Ranch (which has been in Tim's family since the 1870's I believe) You also can drive to a hilltop on the ranch that is 700' or so higher where the view is even better, The ranch has good birding including Io's or Hawaiian hawks which are uncommon in Hawaii now.
Tim and Terri are excellent hosts and eager to help make your stay a wonderful one. This is our second visit with them and my wife and Terri are now buddies! We will be returning, possibly next year!
Open Range - Calm & Comfy
We found this place to be very clean and accommodating for all of our needs. Our desire was to stay in the north part of the Island, away from other homes and congestive traffic and surrounded by pastures, panoramic views yet to be an easy drive to known scenic spots on the North Kohala and including Wiapi'o Valley. If you love horses, this is the place to stay. As I walked to the Na'alapa Stables located right on this 8500+/- acres Kahua Ranch, I passed herds of cowboy horses (they like carrots). There where pastures with sheep and pastures with cattle. Just so peaceful. The home we stayed in was actually a spacious 2 bdrm, 1 bath apartment above a two car garage and adjacent to a large VRBO house. We could see the roof of the house which was only about 4-5' away. The house did obstruct the view of the coastline, but not the ocean. Sunsets were beautiful, especially from the front yard of the property. Within the apartment and down stairs were a washer and dryer, and spare ice chests for our use. The place did not have an oven, but we could use the slow cooker, stove top, toaster over, or microwave to fix our meals. This place was uncluttered and well made and everything functioned well; the Internet was very fast. Each bdrm had ample cabinets and closets to unpack and just move in. There were beach towels to use and a BBQ too. The location is at elevation 3500' or so, thus it is cool and breezy and maybe rainy in the AM and PM, there are plenty of blankets to use. I would definitely stay here again only longer than 7 nights. Terry was very responsive and helpful.
The property was well equipped, clean and very comfortable. Terri was helpful and responsive to questions. We had a great time in the area.
Beautiful setting however you won't view it from this property.
The ranch itself is wonderful with cattle, horses and sheep grazing on acres of open range. The problem with this home is that it has none of that view. Your only view is of the roof of the large house in front, so it would be worth the extra $ to rent that home. The other problem for 2 couples is that the one bedroom is very small with only a double bed and both beds were uncomfortable. The cookout offered by a 3rd party provider is only one day per week, so plan your stay accordingly, which we did not. We loved feeding the horses who were very friendly.
Love the location and the house. No real views from the house proper and cool at night. Had a great time.
