About Lisa and Symon
Born and raised in Philadelphia and England we relocated to Hawaii in 1989 and 1999. We have lived in several areas of the Big Island and chose Kohala Estates to build our home. We live close by and are happy to help in any of your plans or suggestions once you arrive. We have lived here for 25+ years and love the island. We have explored many parts of the island and can share some of our secret spots.
Lisa and Symon purchased this House in 2015
Why Lisa and Symon chose Kohala Estates
We have spent many years on the island and have chosen this spot to live as well as have our vacation rental property. We believe you will find this area as special as we do.

A perfectly framed view
We found Lisa and Symon and their property to be an excellent combination of comfort, casualness and graciousness. They were responsive to our needs and the house was thought out to showcase Hawaiian style on a spectacular hillside above the ocean, removed from civilization just enough to deliver complete disconnect from the normal world while having all the conveniences we needed not too far away. Thanks for what will be cherished memories!
Great location to explore the Kohala coast and beaches
The house has a great layout and beautiful views especially at sunset. We hung out on the large partially roofed deck and enjoyed the breeze after long days of exploring the beaches (Hapuna and Spencers) as well as the historic sites (petroglyphs trail). We also attended the nearby Mauna Kea luau. We visited in late September and found the temps very warm. Night temperature were OK. Symon and LIsa came over and greeted us on our first day and provided excellent advise on a few hikes. Overall, a very good place to stay.
Stay was too short
Spent a month on the Big Island, and would have happily spent the entire time here. Everything we needed in a nice clean and comfortable home. Great sunset views over the horizon in a very quiet location. This is my favorite part of the island. Easy drive to beaches, parks, restaurants and towns. Lisa & Symon were great to deal with. I'm sure if we had needed anything, they would have provided it. Looking forward to returning soon.

inside house is ok
the inside look nice but the outside of this house was not what I paid for. very dry landscape and old building next to house make it look cheap. I didn't like that they charge extra for 4 more people, the listing said the house was for 6 people, but they charge extra for more then 2 people!.it was a two bedroom house, why charge for the number of people you said the house whole? the owner was very nice, thank you for the butter.
The climate on the Big Island is very diverse and here in South Kohala we are in a desert climate with dry land pastures and undeveloped open lands. The average annual rainfall here is less than seven inches, so that coupled with our cooling tradewinds is what makes it ideal for vacationers. As you are local to the island we are somewhat baffled you were unaware of this fact. We do irrigate our property surrounding the house as evidenced by the lawn, trees, orchids and various plants.
Between the home and the ocean there are acres of open undeveloped land before you can see any homes. In the middle of summer in the desert climate it will be dry, and beyond our control.
The old home behind the rental is raw cedar and though not to your liking was not part of the rental you booked and such should not have been a reason for a poor rating on our vacation rental.
The charges for the rental; rate, taxes, additional persons, cleaning etc. are very clearly spelled out by VRBO when you book and before you actually pay for the reservation. Again since they are fully disclosed and by paying for the reservation you have agreed to the charges I don’t believe they should be used as a negative against our property.
You are renting a home that we try very hard to accurately depict in the photos and description on VRBO. I am sorry you did not enjoy your stay as we try to go out of our way to be sure everyone is enjoying the beauty of the place, and has everything they need.
Lovely Quiet Retreat
Beautiful scenery and excellent layout of accommodations. Loved the wrap around lanai and the large split level back lanai. We even watched the fireworks from the resorts 25 or so miles away from the north lanai! Enjoyed our stay.
The photos do not do justice for the views - from the wraparound lanai, from the bedrooms or standing at the stove while cooking! The area is quiet and relaxing. The goats are friendly. Lisa and Symon response is fast. Thanks for sharing this property!!
Our home is in a quiet rural area, of the Big Island, yet quite close to the resorts and just minutes to Spencer Beach Park and Kawaihae Harbor. The closest resort Hapuna/Mauna Kea are just about 8-10 miles away.
