About Karen York

This is the home place in which I grew up. I attended Columbia High School. This has the small town charm where you know everyone.

Karen York purchased this house in 1974

Why Karen York chose North Carolina

This is family owned property. I grew up with my brother on the river-fishing, swimming, canoeing, water skiing and boating. I have enjoyed many years on the river with our family and friends and would like to share this experience with other couples and families. There is nothing as enjoyable like watching the sunset over the mouth of the Scuppernong River and the Albemarle Sound every afternoon.

What makes this house unique

Watching the sunset every afternoon sitting one the deck with my family is what made me fall in love with the River House. We have shared many meals with our family and friends outside. Cooking local seafood. And best of all making home made peach ice cream.

Roomy comfortable Waterfront Property

  • 5 of 5

The house is very clean and well furnished. Lots of extras that make vacation traveling and packing much simpler. The waterfront and sunset views from the deck were even better than the pictures. Karen and her family made sure we were well taken care of. Thanks for the nice stay!

Great location!!!

  • 5 of 5

The riverhouse has a beautiful location. Woke everyday to a birders paradise. Close to the outer banks, lighthouses, numerous wildlife refuges, historic sites and seasonal farmer's markets. The extended family enjoyed our two week vacation here.

Perfect getaway location

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I happened upon this rental property when we were searching for somewhere to spend our 1st wedding anniversary. We feel so lucky to have found it! The views are absolutely amazing-- seriously. It's a corner lot, so there's a water view from nearly every window in the house. It's pet friendly, and our 3-year-old golden retriever mix LOVED playing in the river. I don't think she left the shallow water by the dock all day long! The back deck is shaded by Spanish moss trees. We enjoyed spending time on the deck, swinging in the hammock, drinking coffee on the bench swing, swimming by the dock, and taking the paddle boat out. Columbia is a small, but cute town. We ate at pretty much the only restaurant in town-- a tiny seafood tavern-- the food was delicious and the people were so friendly! We are already talking about when we can go back! Highly recommended :)

Wonderful!!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the Scuppernong River House was absolutely splendid. What a relaxing week! The home was clean and had all necessary amenities. We loved the easy access to the river: our son was in the water form dawn till dusk almost every day. And the short trip to get to the ocean was an added bonus :) Thank you so much for allowing us access to your wonderful home, it was exactly our speed! Looking forward to scheduling a repeat visit.

Wonderful vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this wonderful little retreat July 9-16 and we have already started talking about going back.

Karen and her family were nothing but accommodating and wonderful. The property was far nicer than the description and photos (and both the description and photos were wonderful). Very small, minor grievances cannot begin to reduce the pleasure of staying on the river. It was a wonderful experience to roll out of bed, grab the fishing rod, and walk down to the water and drop a line (and catch all sorts of fish).

In subsequent correspondence with Ms. York, I am pleased to hear she will be updating some features of the home (most notably the television in the living room area). That wasn't a factor for us, as I brought a spare TV I had laying about in the house, but I could see it being a "problem" for others. The property is wonderfully maintained, the views are beautiful, and the remote location is perfect for anyone looking for a getaway.

It's only about 50 minutes to Nags Head, too, so, nothing is terribly far away. And the actual town of Columbia, while small, is very pleasant. Local produce, the fish market, the vineyard, and the small-town feel is very, very welcoming and inviting.

Truly, it was one of the most relaxing, pleasant vacations (nothing quite prepares you for the view when you turn down the driveway to the house) and I hope to make this little hideaway on the Scuppernong a regular vacation destination (maybe next time I'll be there in the fall - I bet that's just lovely).

Cannot recommend highly enough. It will be difficult to leave once you've arrived and settled in. A wonderful vacation spot!

Owner's Response: Thank you. We try so hard to give our guests the experience we had growing up on the river. Our new flat screen smart tv is due to arrive and be installed in 2 weeks. We wanted to have one that was easy to use and that we could help with assistance over the phone if problems. We look forward to your visiting with us again. In the fall we always have the Scuppernong River Festival the second weekend in October. Also September there is a Seafood Festival in Nags Head. The fall and winter is great for bird watching adventures, bear spotting, and fishing. There are also howling tours to hear the calling of the red wolves.

Awesome Location on the River

  • 5 of 5

Three fiftyish woman attending an Outdoors Woman weekend program by the NC Wildlife Commission. The house was everything we needed and more. The beds were comfortable, we were provided with toilet paper and paper towels, and coffee, tea, and fixings. The outdoor fire pit was awesome. The dock might should get a little attention as it looks very rickety. Overall the house was clean and comfortable and we were made to feel welcomed by our hosts.
