Overview

About the property

House, 1 Bedroom, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 2)

A quaint, quintessentially California beach cottage, built by noted Cambria watercolor artist and printmaker, Jo Werts. Designed to take maximum advantage of light, it is replete with huge ocean view windows, and high, open-beam ceilings, giving it a light and airy feeling.

It is simply but comfortably furnished with a King Size bed. It is decorated with some of Ms. Werts' works, and a number of other original prints.

The house is located on a hill overlooking Cambria's Marine Terrace, and affords spectacular ocean views from nearly every room in the house. There is a deck off the master bedroom with beautiful, white-water ocean views, as well as a more private, protected deck and garden in the backyard area. A 2-3 minute walk to the ocean bluff hiking trails of the East-West Ranch Openspace, the Harvey St. Beach, Lampton State Park and Wedgewood Tidepools.

The perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

I spent 5 nights here escaping the heat and stress of city living. I had an amazing time and love this special cottage. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes/cooking utensils/pots and pans. I cooked every night and had everything I needed - loved the outdoor grill. The living room is spacious and lovely spot to unwind after a long day of walking the trails and beach. There is a nice sized dining room table off the kitchen as well as another fold out table which I used to set up a small watercolor painting area under the large glass windows. The upstairs bedroom is like a studio apartment in itself with a couch area and amazing views and a deck. The upstairs bathroom is also nice sized. Overall the place has plenty of room for two people to spread out. The location can't be beat - empty lots on either side so you see deer frequently. It is a quick walk to the beach or Fiscalini Ranch with trials and amazing ocean views. The cottage was very clean and well kept - everything was in top working order. The floor to ceiling windows are amazing - each has a hardy blind for privacy and shade. Debbie, who manages the property, was very helpful and accommodating. I have stayed in several homes in Cambria but this will be my go to spot in the future. Highly recommend!

Cambria Oceanview Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This place was amazing! Much more than a “cottage” actually; three levels with plenty of space and comfort for just the two of us. We especially liked the adjoining outside decks/patios, on all the levels. The house had everything we needed, including a well-equipped full kitchen, where we made full meals.

The location is also amazing! In a lovely, peaceful neighborhood, within walking distance to many trails at Fiscalini Ranch Preserve, which we took full advantage of. We were also just a short drive to the town of Cambria, full of great restaurants and shops, and to San Simeon State Park, for more hiking. The drive to the property, off 101, winds up and down through beautiful, hilly neighborhoods.

Deborah was an excellent communicator in terms of reservations and instructions and although we didn’t have any problems during our stay, we knew we would be able to contact her easily if we did. She checked in with us by email to make sure all was fine, once we arrived. We had total privacy, which was very much appreciated.

We highly recommend this property!

Our Favorite Place in Cambria!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have stayed in the Artist's Cottage several times over the past few years and every time we were so pleased to be there. The large windows and the layout make it very spacious and airy. We have seen many deer, a coyote, and wild turkeys as well as quail and sea birds. This time we were lucky enough to see whales migrating north while we were in bed admiring the ocean view.

The kitchen is very well organized and one can look at the lovely view or the TV while preparing meals. My wife has two knee replacements and the spiral staircase is no problem because each step is only a few inches from the next and there are two rails to assist.

Debbie, the manager, is wonderful to deal with as she is very helpful and friendly and always responds quickly.

We live in Santa Barbara and feel very fortunate to have such a wonderful get-away only three hours from home.

Relaxing Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We just enjoyed our second stay in Cambria at the Artist’s Cottage. For two people the cottage is very spacious and is located in a wonderful location. You can walk to the coast and enjoy the walking through the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve. We enjoy how quiet and peaceful it is in the neighborhood. Sitting on the deck and watching the ocean while eating lunch and drinking wine is very relaxing and in the spring we were able to see whales breaching.

The house does have some quirks to it as other reviews have mentioned. Mainly the stairs and driveway are very steep. We bring our luggage upstairs via the outside stairs to the deck. On clear warm days the upstairs can warm up quite a bit, but we find keeping the slider open with the screen and having a fan or two on works well. When it gets foggy and cooler the main source of heat is a gas wood stove which does take an hour or so to warm things up. It is on a thermostat so you can leave it running at night if you want. For us the king sized bed (which is very comfortable) and the spacious well stocked kitchen are great features. Internet and TV work well and fast. Having a BBQ for cooking has been nice for us to grill steak on. Access to washer and dryer have been a benefit on both of our trips. The pictures on VRBO represent the condition and layout of the cottage very well.

We have really enjoyed our stays at the cottage and love the Cambria area, and have plans to return next year. As we discussed our rating we settled on 4.5 since there are quirks, but if one knows up front what to expect the cottage can be a great place to relax and unwind.
