About Tyler Barnes
Environmentally conscientious, owner-builder, designer with a B.A. in Architectural Studies from the University of Washington. Have lived in "The Gorge" since 1993 and married a real "local girl" from Mosier, Oregon. Together we have traveled the world and settled down in this amazing community. We enjoy sharing our home with people who want to escape the hustle and bustle of their lives and take in all that our little spot has to offer.
Tyler Barnes purchased this House in 2000
Why Tyler Barnes chose Underwood
We bought this one acre parcel back in 1999 with the intent to build a shop and garage with living quarters above – the space you are in now – that we would live in while building the main house, when time and money allowed. As a “young couple” with no money, we searched for used and reclaimed materials, enlisted the help of friends and family to help build this structure, and essentially were able to “build a house” ourselves. Providing shelter for yourself is a primal experience and is exhausting, challenging and rewarding.
What makes this House unique
Underwood is an unincorporated community in Skamania County, Washington. The latitude is 45.73 and the longitude is 121.526. Located above WA State Route 14, the 20 square mile community with approximately 1,053 residents is nestled on the side of Underwood Mountain (2,755 feet elevation) which rises between the Little White Salmon River and the White Salmon River. The Underwood Community Center includes a gym, playground with picnic tables, outdoor basketball and tennis courts, horse riding paddock, planned community gardens, with a nearby post office (ZIP 98651) and a recently built fire station.

Quiet and peaceful
We really enjoyed our stay at this cozy rental. The deck was especially nice to sit and have a cup of coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening. Kitchen was well equipped although appliances were a bit dated - not a big deal for us. Tyler and Traci were very responsive to our questions about the area. Close to great mountain biking, hiking, breweries and wineries. Just be aware that there is a $2 charge for the toll bridge. Overall great weekend getaway for us.
Had everything you would need Owners very friendly
Rustic, peaceful, and quiet.
This was a nice getaway for my wife and I. It wasn't quite what we expected from the information we could see online, but we managed to make it work. Its not a great place for older folks or those with hampered mobility such as we are with all the stairs to traverse. But we set ourselves up in the living area, avoided the loft, and I did all of the major packing up and down the exterior stairs to lessen the exposure for my wife. Once we got settled in and had a plan, being cautious we did quite well. From the online info we had assumed that the main level was on the 1st floor and the loft bedroom and deck were upstairs - it was a little confusing. It would probably be a good thing to clarify that the main living area is upstairs as well. But we were comfortable and had a nice stay. Thanks.
The property is very peaceful and well-maintained. I am amazed that the owners built the place themselves! It is so beautifully crafted!!
We loved sitting on the porch at night and lying in the hammock during the day. The bed is comfy, the linens and towels are of good quality, the kitchen is perfectly stocked, and there was enough comfy seating in the living room. I thought it would be tiny, but the apartment is actually wonderfully spacious and open.
Tyler was spot on with communication, and he even set up a pack-n-play for our little one to sleep in. Thank you so much for making our stay so easy and pleasant.
Great place for a weekend getaway!
