About this property

Tranquil Mountain retreat 180° Views, onsite hike, wildlife, games, near winery

Retreat to breathtaking views at Bear Family Ranch. Only 2h from the Bay Area but feels a world away. Go skiing at Kirkwood, relax on the deck, hike on trails directly on the property, explore caves and gold mines (10 min), go wine tasting in Sutter Creek (20 min), antiquing in Jackson, whitewater rafting (30min), or see Silver lake and Kirkwood (45 min). In summer, enjoy Tahoe area lakes for fishing, boating. And o, the stars at night, you must see it to believe it!

Enjoy stunning views from almost every room across 3000 sq feet at Bear Family Ranch. Take in the awesome view from the panoramic living room, the downstairs game room, or from one of the three queen beds. The ranch can accommodate up to 10 comfortably. Enjoy luxurious comfort with 4 bedrooms (3 queens, and 1 twin room) and 3 bathrooms.

The ranch has 3 levels so everyone can have their own quiet space. The kids hang out downstairs with foosball and game room while the adults enjoy some wine on the main floor and wraparound deck. The new couple will enjoy the romantic upstairs bedroom. The ranch has free high speed internet, gourmet kitchen with granite counters and a large wrap-around deck. For yogis, there is a yoga room with deck access that adjoins the master bedroom. For kids, there is a game room with a foosball table, a large 70" screen TV fitted with X-box, Chromecast and a movie collection. Hike directly on the property and meet deer and turkeys that frequently visit.

We do get snow sometimes on the property as early as November. One year we had 1.5 feet accumulation, enough to go sledding in our backyard. Mostly when it snows it will stay on the ground for a day then melt away. So it looks very pretty but does not restrict access.

Strictly no smoking indoor or outdoors.
Strictly no pets and no animals including service or emotional support because we are severely allergic and have doctor's note, no exceptions. Thank you for your consideration.

There is a crib available but there is a $50 charge to set up. Please request if interested.

The whole house

Feel free to reach out via email, text or phone call during your stay if there is anything we can help you with.

The ranch is located off the Hwy 88 corridor. In the winter, easily reach the ranch on a Friday night without having to drive through heavy snow. The next morning when the traffic subsides, roads clear, and the sun is shining, make the drive up to Kirkwood for awesome boarding and skiing. We also love going sledding about 25 minutes up the hill, or snow-shoeing at beautiful Silver Lake. Prefer to stay warm? Cozy up to our fireplace and watch the snow dance outside. We often get a dusting of snow on property as early as November, but rarely too much so access stays easy. Enjoy the sweeping views from the couch or drop in on a winery or two.

In the summer, live in the center of outdoor activity. Stay on the ranch for short hikes, lazing around and stargazing; or drive 30 min uphill to alpine lakes for fishing, boating, hiking and kayaking. Caving is only 10 minutes away, while within 30 minutes you can find whitewater rafting on the Mokulumne (self-guided), historical tours of gold country, wine tasting and shows at the Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort.

Car is best.

Strictly no smoking. $500 fine or lose your security deposit for smoking anywhere on the property, even outside. There is a strong fire hazard in the area and smoking can burn the whole place down. We the owners are also allergic to cigarette residue and we use the place as well. Please respect this house rule. Thank you.

Strictly no pets and no animals including service or emotional support because we are severely allergic and have doctor's note, no exceptions. Thank you for your consideration. Please make alternate accommodations back home for your animals.

About the host

Hosted by Connie and Eric (owners)

Host profile image
We are a SF bay area couple who met on the dance floor in 2004. Connie grew up camping at Canada's pristine lakes and love evergreen trees. Eric grew up between LA and Maryland and likes to hike and build things with his hands. Together we enjoy dancing, singing and the great outdoors. California is so full of natural wonders and gold country is serenely beautiful. We love having this spacious property to explore, commune with nature and share with our daughter, our family, our friends and you, our guest.

Why they chose this property

We looked for two years in the California Sierras before we found this gem. We didn't even know about the town of Volcano before we saw this property. But when we saw the sweeping views of evergreen trees on 39 acres of hike-able playground, we knew we have found the one.

What makes this property unique

We love sunrises and sunsets at the ranch, when the hills glow with pink, the air is crisp but moist and the sound of silence is interrupted only by sweet bird calls. We love lazing on the deck on warm summer nights to view the stars. And we love watching the snow come down on winter afternoons as we cozy up to the wood fire. There is so much to love about the ranch. The people too are so incredible friendly in the area. It's rejuvenating to be a part of this serene landscape, if only for a short while.
