Enjoy Lake Waccamaw in a cozy cottage steps from the lake.

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Escape the noise, the traffic, and the stress of life. The lake is approximately half way between the northeast and Florida. Treat yourself to a lake holiday. A special place in this world where your entire being is released and a true sense of serenity and relaxation floods your thoughts. There is no place so special as Lake Waccamaw. Old timers claim this lake is the “largest natural lake from Maine to Florida”. Lake Waccamaw is located about 35 minutes off I-95 taking exit 13A east at Lumberton, NC, (US 74 4-lane all the way). We are 39 miles from Wilmington, 51 miles from Southport, and 65 miles from Myrtle Beach.

Listen for the sounds of wildlife. Look at a world of waterfowl (mallards, coots, wood ducks, teal, merganser, cormorants, herons, cranes, kingfishers.) Enjoy the beautiful sunrises. Watch an osprey gracefully swoop for his dinner and maybe spot an eagle. “Hear” the quiet. Enjoy a special peace in a special place.

Our lakefront house includes 3 bedrooms, 1 bath with stackable washer/dryer, modern kitchen with bar for lunch or a dining table for 4-6 people. You have pier privileges with decking both covered and open for sunbathing or night star-gazing. The shallow water is ideal for young children and we have a sandy beach for play-time. Should you come don't stay too long because you might get “bit” (you may fall in love with the lake and not want to ever leave.)

About Bob & Gail Crutchfield

We have loved Lake Waccamaw all of our lives. As children we traveled with our families and friends to swim, fish, and just enjoy. As a young married couple we bought our first place at the lake. In 1984 we bought the home we live in now as a "get away". Finally, in 2000 we moved here permanently. We have owned "the COTTAGE" since 2001 and have rented it yearly. We're excited about meeting our vacationers and look forward to this new experience.

Bob & Gail Crutchfield purchased this house in 2001

Our weekend at your cottage was BETTER than we could have ever imagined! What a WONDERFUL place away from all the daily hustle bustle of city life. Such a peaceful and serene atmosphere! We were SO LUCKY to find out about it, and it was so close to where my granddaughter's convention was being held. (She's 17, and was so INTRIGUED with the cottage) It's hard to impress a teenager these days, but...SHE WAS AMAZED, asking if we could do ANOTHER TRIP so SHE could stay at the cottage next time! !

The owners thought of everything! Even had breakfast items, coffee set up, PLUS FRESH-BAKED COFFEE CAKE waiting for our arrival!!!

Having Never been to this area, we had NO IDEA WHAT TO EXPECT!!! BUT, WHAT A FANTASTIC SURPRISE!!! WE will DEFINITELY MAKE PLANS TO RETURN!!! IF YOU want an amazing getaway for rest and relaxation....TRUST ME...THIS IS THE PLACE!!!! Many thanks to Gail and BOB for letting us share your "little slice of heaven". We look forward to our next trip. IT JUST HAS TO BE FOR A LONGER TIME!!

Had a great time!

Can't say enough about what a great weekend we had at Lake Waccamaw! Bob and Gail were wonderful, generous, welcoming hosts.... They made our daughter's summer by bringing her tubing and giving us a boat ride as well. The cabin was great well appointed with everything you would need... fully equipped kitchen with everything you need, including keurig pods in case you forgot coffee, extra beach towels and robes, great little cabin. Tons of space to spread out: screened in porch, little beach with a hammock, beachfront deck with table/chairs and the use of the owners awesome dock with tons of seating, great lake views and cool breeze. They also had kayaks you could use and pool floaties to lounge on right off the dock.

Lake was huge and pretty, busy but still quiet. Rode our bikes on the road around the lake, enjoyed seafood at Dale's Seafood restaurant, lunch at Anthony's Italian Restaurant in Whiteville. Did a day trip to Wilmington 45min away and Carolina Beach another 15min further.

Overall, was a truly relaxing weekend with just enough fun stuff to do and we will definitely be back!!

Relaxing, Friendly, Clean , with everything we needed for a much needed Break!

  • 5 of 5

It took me way too long to write this. In Feb. My family visited from NY they typically stay with me in nearby Columbus County but we had the full on flu at our house - not wanting to expose them to our germs I set up this cozy cabin for them to stay in for a few days until we could get our house under control. The owners Bob and Gail were friendly and communicative from the start. The house was ready when I arrived to stock the fridge and get it ready for my family. Everything was in good condition with adequate supplies to do dishes etc. Gail left us fresh Zucchini bread, there were K cups for the Keurig, all I had to do was stock some fruits and vegetables and it instantly felt like home.

The Lake Waccamaw area is scenic, with a quiet lake this time of year, the canal side features frogs, turtles and the occasional alligator. The town itself is small but has a grocery, gas, and a couple of family style restaraunts.

The house has it's own little private sandy beach that butts up to the water and a shared dock with the owners. The sunsets are vivid and peaceful and the sound of the water on the shore very soothing. The Back porch was a favorite spot, screened in , and large enough for all of us to eat out there. The kitchen provided adequate space for us to cook a couple meals and even invite my parents for the day to join us.

The place was relaxing, quiet and more importantly flu free! My sister , husband and Niece enjoyed it so much they added a couple days to their stay. Even when it was safe to come to my house.

If your looking for a place that would be great for kids, I can see them spending endless hours playing in the shallow water at the back of the house. While you are able to watch them from the comfort of the screened porch or park a chair in the sun.

House has 3 bedrooms, a open living kitchen area. It's not huge but is ample space for a family of 4-5 . I want to use the word cozy but sometimes that comes across as 'code' for too small. It was not too small , it just felt cozy. Warm, comfortable and home like.

We appreciate all the help and quick responses and kindness the owners afforded us. This is a family get away that I suspect once you have stayed you will want to keep coming back to.

Return Visit

  • 5 of 5

Memorial Day weekend at Lake Waccamaw was a wonderful treat. We could not wait to return after a trip down in April. Bob & Gail are the consummate hosts and once again made us feel at home and like family. Even on a busy weekend like Memorial Day, the lake was not crowded and the atmosphere was laid back and casual, a true respite from the hectic days that make up our everyday lives. I cannot recommend The Cottage or Lake Waccamaw enough. If you are searching for entertainment, bright lights, and crowds, this is not your place, but for relaxation, peace and quiet, gorgeous views and awesome hospitality, you cant go wrong here.

Relaxing Weekend

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at Lake Waccamaw and were impressed by the lack of commercialism and crowds. The lake is beautiful and uncrowded, the neighborhood is quiet, safe and serene. It is like stepping back in time to a slower time and place. The Cottage, is well kept although it is an older home, it has the feel of a 1950's bungalow with modern amenities (thankfully!). The house is fully furnished and has plenty of extras, it is refreshing to find a rental that is not sparsely furnished and has plenty of lamps and lighting. Beds were clean and comfortable, HVAC worked well, we didn't run out of hot water after 4 showers, and the kitchen had plenty of pots, pans and dishes for our meals, and a dishwasher too! Bob & Gail were the most pleasant hosts, and welcomed us on our arrival and wished us well at our departure, in the style of true southern hospitality. This wonderful weekend was one we are ready to repeat, and no doubt we will be back soon!
