Fitts Village is an overlooked gem
The small fishing town of Fitts Village hugs the coast just a few miles north of the capital, Bridgetown. Its most prominent feature is the long stretch of white sandy beach, the perfect place to while away a sunny afternoon and catch a glimpse of the old Bajan fishing boats returning from a day on the water. If you want to buy the fresh catch of the day, head over to the nearby fish market in Paynes Bay and return to your Fitts Village vacation rental to cook up a seafood feast.
You can see the Statue of Liberty from Fitts Village
While there aren't many attractions in the town itself, staying in a Fitts Village vacation rental opens up all the countless possibilities on Barbados, particularly if you have a vehicle. If you like the odd tipple of rum, you're not going to want to miss a visit to St. Nicholas Abbey or the Mount Gay Visitor Center, 2 of the most prominent distilleries in the Caribbean. For a slice of local life, you can swing by Cheapside Market to sip on a fresh coconut while you wander past the towering piles of exotic fruit.
Soak up the rays in Fitts Village
Like the rest of the Caribbean islands, the snorkeling and diving in the surrounding waters is exquisite. One of the best spots is the S.S. Stavronikita, a Greek freighter which sunk in the 70s and has since created an artificial reef teeming with coral, curious turtles and other creatures of the deep. If you're on honeymoon, few things could be as romantic as hoisting the sails of a private catamaran to take a sunset cruise with a sundowner. Alternatively, just tiptoe across the powdery sand to watch day turn to night from a quiet spot under the swaying palms.
Fitts Village is teeming with nature
Compared to most Caribbean islands, Barbados has got a surprising number of land-dwelling critters. If you head off into the lush green interior, you may very well spot green monkeys swinging from the trees, red-footed tortoises ambling below and lazy lizards basking in the hot midday heat. Bring your binoculars and you could spot hummingbirds and herons, not to mention the falcons that circle overhead. Where Barbados really shines though is under the sea. This underwater world is alive with huge leatherback and hawksbill turtles, schools of colorful exotic fish and the odd reef shark.
