Why the Owner Chose Oneida

After living on the North Florida Coast and observing what made vacation rentals succeed I spent years looking for a new development in the Tennessee mountains. I wanted undiscovered country since Gatlinburg reminded me too much of Panama City Beach. Sharing space, restaurants and Highways with millions of tourists was not my idea of relaxing. While driving in North East Tennessee one weekend I happened onto the Big South Fork National River and Recreational Area after being lost. This was the beautiful secluded river with high bluffs, incredible natural settings (but no tourists) I had dreamed about. Bought the land, created a large pond between the ridges and built a fantastic log home. The legendary singer/song writer, Tom T. Hall, liked it so much he said I could name it after him if he and Dixie could stay and write songs from time to time. Great folk - very generous arrangement.

The Unique Benefits at this Tom T. Hall Mountain Home

This is the most relaxing place you could ever imagine. I tell people there's nothing to do but ya don't have enough time to do it all. I usually never leave the cabin for days at a time after hiking, swimming, fishing, love cooking in that kitchen, reading, and playing music - there is a great Yamaha upright piano that fills the home with harmonics. Sitting in the hot tub gazing at night skies that are like nothing I've ever seen in the south. You can pick out satellites and shooting stars streaming across the heavens. Rocking outside on the covered porches or out on the dock reading while enjoying the north western breezes enjoying the quite solitude makes for the perfect get a way from it all vacation I've ever experienced. It's a hard place to leave once you've unwound. I also wanted to provide a place that families would enjoy for gatherings and vacations. Kids really love the pond and hiking into the Big South Fork Park, horseback trail riding and the train to the old mining camp in Stearns KY are highlights for guests. And of course the Big South Fork River for rafting and white water canoeing is spectacular. There are beautiful hiking trails along the river to Angle Falls and other points that are considered the best trails in the country.

Owner's Map of Oneida

My name is Dennis Sheffield. I have lived in Nashville since 1991 but originally from Marianna Florida, a small town in the panhandle about 50 miles north of the Gulf Coast. (That is Florida State Seminole Country - 1981 Alum) I own a promotional products and T-Shirt business, am a grill master on the Big Green Egg, know how to sing a good song and can tell funny jokes. Can you say that you are single and looking for a rich wife on this thing?

This photo was taken in 1990 but will have to do for now so use your imagination.

    • We rented this cabin for a girls weekend. We all agree this was the nicest cabin we have rented in our 10 years of meeting. The beds are very comfortable. The nicest touch is the light over the tub in both bathrooms. Thanks so much Dennis. Melissa Donahue

    • Hi Dennis, I just wanted to let you know that we had a fabulous time at the Tom T Hall cabin. It is a wonderful place to visit and we plan to return next summer. Nellie, Jon, Greg and I are going to choose the exact time very soon. I believe that is the best vacation place in the states that I ever visited. Thanks for maintaining such a user-friendly and lovely place to visit! Libby

    • We loved our time at the cabin! We've rented many cabins and found this on to be, by far, the loveliest, most private and best equipped we've encountered. It's a perfect place to commune with friends, family and nature. Dennis made us feel welcome and at home. Thank you so much!

    • Dennis, my wife, brother and his wife just got back yesterday after spending the week of Aug 16-23 at your Tom T. Hall cabin. We loved it so much. The peace and quiet was great and it was so relaxing sitting on the porch looking at the pond in the morning with a cup of coffee. The day was filled with some away activities but three or four days we just sat around the cabin and pond fishing and relaxing in the hot tub. The cabin is the best stocked rental property I have ever rented and included everything except a personal masseuse (sp?). Alco the cabin was decorated in the neatest way and we loved it. When we left Saturday, it was like leaving family as we were sad to leave. If I hit the lotto, may stay several months next time. Don & Sandy Meece

    • Dennis, We were at the cabin for the Memorial Day week this year. My wife had just graduated from nursing school and it was our friend's 51st Birthday. The water was great! The dogs loved it! We had fires each night inside and out (lots of weenie roasting and smores). It was kind of a family reunion with people from all over the country, many staying in nearby hotels. My 95-year-old grandmother especially enjoyed it. She's from Montana and it really reminded her of that. Six of us took a horseback ride with Southeast Pack trips and had a great time, but only two of us went on a canoe trip. That was really a highlight for me. They take you 5.9 miles up river and you take as long as you want to paddle back. We saw a mother and baby ducks, waterfall shallow rapids. It was wonderfully peaceful. By the way, we had two kids in our group, who we're happy to say, caught their first fish of their lives there at the cabin. I've produced a 20 minute video production using all the pictures and videos we took that week and set them to Tom T. Hall tunes. If anyone is going to the cabin in the future, I am sending a demo of that DVD up for guests to preview along with brochures and info for getting in touch with me. It's a great way to savor vacation memories and can be done from wherever you are in the country for as little as $100. Dennis, as I told you over the phone, it was a wonderful life experience. We think next time we might try it in the winter too. Thanks again, Bob Wagner

    • Hi Dennis, I just wanted to let you know how much we are enjoying your cabin this week. It is wonderful here, I have not put on a bit of makeup or fixed my hair all week! My daughter caught the biggest fish so far, a bass, and it sure was tasty. The water is nice and warm on top and refreshing on the bottom, and every now and then we get a little nip from the fish. We used your smoker today to smoke a whole turkey and it was wonderful. I don’t think I have ever had such a relaxing vacation, and I have been to SEVERAL places from the Atlantis on Paradise Island in the Bahamas to the beaches of Costa Rica, Florida and Northern California. We had a great time horseback riding at Southeast Pack Trips. I did not realize they took only cash or check, so I had no way to pay them. Would you believe they told me to just send them a check when I got home? Amazing! Our dogs really had a good time exploring all of the property, and swimming with us. We had an awesome time, I am already looking into booking for TWO weeks next year. Thank you, Sherry Huff

    • We reserved the cabin to have a family Thanksgiving in the mountains. Our family (4 Generations) came from Texas, Florida, Kentucky and Illinois for the week. We had a wonderful time and were blown away by the amenities and comfort of the cabin. No one wanted to go home. I drove 978 miles from Texas to stay and would do it again in a heartbeat. Thank you so much!

    • Dennis, You told me when we rented your lovely cabin that we would not want to leave. After our wonderful stay I must say that it was most certainly an understatement. We have never had such a great vacation and we have never stayed at such a beautiful place. The accomodations were superior to any cabin we have ever rented and more importantly the surroundings were spectacular. My kids loved throwing the fish food in the pond and then swimming with the fish! We swam, fished, and relaxed the entire time. My only regret was not reserving a week of this little piece of heaven a summer in advance. We will most certainly see you every summer from now on and thanks!

    • Dennis, I want to thank you so much for the vacation at your cabin. My kids range in ages from 2 - 14. They all had a great time. The cabin had everything we needed to enjoy the week. The kids loved the hot tub, fire pit, pond, canoe, and feeding the fish. I didn't know there was so many beautiful sights within easy driving distance from the cabin. It will be very hard to top this vacation. Thanks for making it so enjoyable. I will recommend the cabin to all my friends.

    • Dennis, I wanted to tell you what a wonderful time we had at your cabin. Having it snow on Saturday topped off the whole trip. The scenery was beautiful and could not have been more perfect. Our son is only 5 months old so this was the first time he had been exposed to snow. Thanks to pictures and video, we will have lasting and unforgettable memories for our family. We look forward to staying at your cabin every year, if available. Thank you for an awesome vacation! Tonia and Doug Neill and Connor too........
