Lonesome Pine Lodge - a Large, Rustic, Mountain Log Cabin

Year Purchased: 2008

Why the Owner Chose Hot Springs

One of the driving forces behind my purchase of this cabin is its close proximity to the Appalachian Trail. I’ve hiked numerous sections of the AT, and this area is one of my favorites. It is the perfect jumping off point for all kinds of outdoor activities. Whether it’s fly fishing Little Laurel Creek (2 miles), kayaking the Nolichucky (9 miles), hiking the AT (<1 mile), bouldering at Blackstack Cliffs (8 miles), biking the Paint Creek Trails (7 miles), or having a picnic at 4400’ in Jones Meadow (7 miles), adventure is just out the back door.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin

The cabin is situated nearly halfway between the quaint mountain town of Hot Springs, NC (15 miles) and the historic town of Greeneville, TN (18 miles). Although both offer adventure, relaxation, history, and culture, the best thing about Lonesome Pine Lodge is the fact that you don’t even have to get in your car to find something to do. Fish for trout in the creek that runs through the front yard, go for a day hike on the AT, bike along Paint Creek up Viking Mountain Road, or grill out on the deck and enjoy the cool, clean mountain air. On a clear night, walk out the garage and look at the sky, it’s spectacular.

A
Appalachian Trail Access

This is the best place to jump on the trail if you are heading north.

B
Appalachian Trail Access

This is where you should get on the AT if you are heading south. There is a very old cemetery here just past an ancient log cabin. Between the two along the road is the trail.

C
Nolichucky River Access

Here is great place to small mouth bass fish as well as put in a kayak or canoe.

D
Jones Meadow

The AT runs right through this field and there are spectacular views of Blackstack Cliffs and Greeneville.

E
Blackstack Cliffs

Just a short side trail off of the AT, Blackstack also offers stunning views of Greene County.

F
Little Laurel Creek

Excellent trout fishing all along this tributary of the French Broad.

G
The Steady Eddy

Great coffee and hot chocolate at this local coffee shop.

H
Paint Creek Campground

This is where you access the Paint Creek Trails. You can hike, bike, camp, picnic, and trout fish all from this great little spot.

I
Downtown Hot Springs

Get a massage, relax in the Hot Tubs, go rafting on the French Broad, shop for art produced by local craftsmen, have a beer at Rock Bottom, or enjoy a patty melt at Smoky Mt. Diner.

J
Downtown Greeneville

Visit the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site, stop by the Nathanael Greene Museum, or get tickets for the "Dickson-Williams Mansion Tour" at the historic General Morgan Inn.

K
Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park

105 acres with a museum, a replica of the original cabin, fishing in the Nolichucky River, a swimming pool, picnic tables, and a campground.

Owner's Map of Hot Springs

Although I’ve lived all over the southeast, I’ve spent the last 25 years living in and around the Orlando area. When I was a kid, my grandparents had a summer home in Lake Toxaway, NC that we used to visit every year. That is where I fell in love with the mountains. I’ve always been the outdoor adventure type and that, coupled with my experiences as a youngster, has made owning a cabin in the mountains a lifelong dream. Though I’ve never actually lived there, when I drive up to the Smokies, it feels like I'm coming home.

Christmas in the Mountains

Reminder notes to self to write a review and thank you, recently found in appointment book. Ours was a trip for a family of eleven. We spent an awesome week in the most enchanting and welcoming lodge ever. We enjoyed walks in the snow ,up numerous trails, conversations with the local people, and historic adventures in the near by towns. We enjoy the quiet evenings in front of the fireplace with a good glass of wine..playing games at the dining room table while others cook dinners in the spacious kitchen, it was a family affair. We got snowed in for New Year's Eve thinking oh no ,but found we had an beautiful dinner, good music , a warm atmosphere and danced the night away in the rustic atmosphere. If you enjoy playing in the snow and building snowmen, which we did .This is the place for you. If you want to travel back in time and really enjoy your family visit this lodge. Our family will be making a return visit in the fall. We can't wait. A special thank you to our host Alan Taylor for allowing us to share his awesome lodge.

Will not stay there again

Guest: RB (NC)
Date of Stay: 04/21/11 Review Submitted: 05/03/11

The water smelled horrible, a shower was out of the question it was that bad. House and grill were good. House is about 30 minutes from anything except a portion of the AT. Properties group promised biking and hiking info included but did not leave anything and the info book in the house was missing those pages, plus no internet or phone access to look up the info. Pick something much closer to Hot Springs or Greeneville. Will not stay there again. BTW the 2 ponds are pretty much mosquito pits.

Owner response:We are so sorry you did not enjoy your stay at the cabin! It is really important to us that each of our guests enjoy the mountain experience we offer and to this end, we do try to provide as much information as possible. The water supply, like most places in the mountains is from a well. Frequently sulfur is one component of this water and sometimes does have a slight odor. This may come as a surprise to folks used to city water. However, having not had any of our many visitors comment on the smell, it did elude us to mention it. This will be mentioned in all future advertisements. We do certainly try to have an abundance of local information available at the cabin and perhaps several copies of things like maps for biking/hiking would be helpful. We do have a land line phone and the 800 number on hand in the cabin for any questions. Many visitors enjoy the remote location of the cabin and being 'unplugged' is one of the positive things we often hear. For anyone with questions about the exact location of the cabin, you will find a Google map as part of the listing and it should definitely be referred to when choosing to stay at the Lonesome Pine Lodge. Again, we do wish your experience had been better and hope your feedback helps future visitors to be able to embrace this authentic mountain getaway-bugs and all!

Escape from reality

Guest: Doug (Orlando, FL)
Date of Stay: 10/27/10 Review Submitted: 12/30/10

The calming sounds from the creek that passes in front of the cabin alone is worth a stay. If your looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday, this is the place. The cabin was very clean and well equipped. Had tons of fun exploring my two 5 year olds. Although very cozy, the cabin with its front porch, side deck, large kitchen had plenty of room for a large family/ group a friends which didn't make us feel like we were always on top of each other. Plenty of outdoor activities hiking, rafting, etc. but, the acivity of doing nothing, taking in nature, along with a few naps was the best part of the stay. will definitely visit again in the future.

Our Peaceful Getaway

Guest: Nick & family (Polk City, FL)
Date of Stay: 11/21/10 Review Submitted: 12/18/10

The cabin was very clean and spacious, with more than enough space for our family and friends, a group of 6. It had everything we needed to cook, making it feel like home. There was a very pretty view from every window, especially for someone from FL who does not get to see mountains. And it was very relaxing and quiet inside, and outside on the porch you could hear the sound of the stream, a very nice background noise. Then when you did need to get a small change from the quiet the drive into Greenville was a nice one, with beautiful scenery throughout the drive and friendly people in town who always seemed interested in where you were from. I would recommend it to family and friends, and we are looking forward to another opportunity to go back.

Perfect get-away cabin

Guest: Susan (Orlando, FL)
Date of Stay: 08/05/10 Review Submitted: 08/19/10

This cabin was the perfect setting for my family from Michigan to unite with my family from Florida. The cabin had more than enough room for our combined group of 8. Bedrooms were roomy, beds comfortable, great kitchen, large living room with flat screen, nicely furnished, and the location was ideal! Good grocery store in Greenville, went white water rafting, booked with Huck Finn Adventures in Hot Springs, hiked on the trail, and it's a beautiful drive up to the top of Viking Mountain! We had 3 full days of fun and adventure. We all are hoping to have a repeat trip next year. It was a special time for my family. Thanks Allen!!!

Great Place to Unwind!

Guest: Anonymous
Date of Stay: 06/30/10 Review Submitted: 07/05/10

We stayed here late June/early July 2010. We LOVE this place! If you want a place to get away from it all, this is it. You won't find cell phone or internet service (UN-PLUG yourself!), but you will find a very comfortable and roomy log cabin---PLENTY of room for 15 people. The river/creek was low when we were there due to the dry weather, so fishing was a little off. But we still enjoyed ourselves immensely. Downtown Greeneville TN has some great antique shops---I highly recommend Greeneville Antique Market, which is located on West Depot Street---follow the owner's directions to downtown Greeneville--when you get near the Andrew Johnson home place, take a left on Depot Street---allow yourselves at least 2 hours--this place is 3 stories high and packed with great antiques and collectibles! We visited Hot Springs also---didn't find a whole lot there, but there was a very nice ART and Antique Shop---emphasis on ART, because it contained mostly art from the local area----some very nice items here. The home was very clean, well maintained. The nearest supermarket is Ingles in Greeneville--a simple right out the cabin driveway, another right at the end of Viking Mountain Road, and approximately 13 miles down the mountain. Very nice folks and they have everything you may need. We lucked up on "local fresh corn" season and brought home a bunch to freeze for the winter---it was delicious. Thank you Allen and Molly for sharing your mountain home. We loved it and hope to return!

We've stayed at the Lonesome Pine Lodge 3 times since we found out about it a little over a year ago and just wanted to say thanks for another great time. Regardless of the season, you just can't find a better mountain property to vacation at. The cabin feels rustic, but has modern ammenities (loved the HDTV) and comforts and is in the absolutely best location of any mountain property. I love being minutes from one of the best sections on the Appalachain Trail, or minutes from rafting, mountain biking, or sipping a cool drink (or two) in Hot Springs. Please don't advertise this place! Would hate to have availability problems! Thanks again and I'll be back in the fall. Mark
