Location: Vinalhaven, Mid-Coast & Islands, Maine, USA
Accommodations: House, 9 Bedrooms + Sleeping Porch, 4.5 Baths (Sleeps 18-24)
This 1917 Arts & Crafts house was built by our great-grandparents on a rocky promontory in Penobscot Bay, Maine with distant views of the Camden Hills. It has never had any other owners than our family and it is a cherished spot, for many good reasons.
This large house was designed for a big family and boasts beautiful proportions, sweeping porches and a cathedral ceiling and stone fireplace in the living room. The dining room and kitchen are commodious with plenty of space, shelves, 3 working refrigerators and two sinks. There are multiple staircases, secret doors, artful touches, old clawfoot tubs, plus many nooks and crannies for quiet solitude. It's tightly built and the interior teal-stained pine walls have never even needed to be restored in 92 years. We have an interesting library with a range of books collected over many decades, as well as a baby grand piano for the musically-inclined. There is a study with fascinating old maps and charts, original artwork on the walls and history attached to nearly every piece of furniture.
This place is feels exceptionally vibrant, alive and peaceful. The elevated views from the second floor, where you see stirring sunsets over blackened hills and a dazzling carpet of ocean, are positively sublime. Some people never want to go downstairs for dinner!
This house's personality is absolutely perfect for family reunions, retreats, gatherings or even a bunch of couples who might want to vacation together. The love this House has witnessed over the years, and received, is evident in the vibe you get when you come in. It wants nothing more than to be filled with people, art, music and togetherness.
The private dock at the bottom of a winding, terraced path is also available to tenants and there is even a mooring or two that can be used. The house is fed by private well-water. The property is flanked by three other properties which are also owned by our extended family--there are no strangers here. At the bottom of our driveway lies the entrance to Perry Creek reserve and some incredible walking trails.
The town of Vinalhaven is 8 miles away by car and has groceries, restaurants, art galleries, great historical society, craft fairs and a library. There are also a couple of freshwater quarries for swimming (don't miss these!) Vinalhaven has ferry service from Rockland, Maine, 6 times a day.
Rental costs per week in high season are $3500 (local land-line included). Off season rate in June and September is $2500 a week. Note: Month long rentals will be discounted at 20%.
