Il Fienile: the Most Charming Country House You Can Dream of

Muricciaglia is a property of seventy hectares (one hundred and fifty acres) off the beaten path yet only five minutes drive from the medieval village of Castellina in Chianti and a few kilometers from Radda in Chianti. There are three houses, the main house where my husband Franco and I live, Ovile, the old sheep shed and Fienile. Il Fienile, the ancient stone built hay barn, is now a charming self contained villa surrounded by private terraces and large meadows: the view of fields and woods, as far as the eye can see, is lovely. The upper floor includes a master bedroom (a large glass door opens our onto an outdoor terrace) with bathroom en suite, another double bedroom, a second bathroom and a mezzanine. On the lower floor there is the living room with an open fireplace and a fully equipped kitchen that opens onto the wisteria covered pergola. Il Fienile has its own laundry room, central heating, telephone and satellite TV and WIFI.
The elegantly designed swimming pool is not far. Guests will find serenity and peace in our hideaway in the heart of Chianti Classico hills surrounded by olive orchards. Franco tends them and at every fall at harvest time the new green gold blesses our table.

There may be other places to stay in the area, but none will be better. We stayed in Il Fienile for a week in April and the entire experience was exceptional. The location is quite, but very convenient to Castellina in Chianti with easy access by car to other areas in Tuscany; the setting is idyllic with expansive views over the surrounding hillsides; the accommodation is spacious, comfortable, and well appointed; the weather was perfect; and the hosts - Mimma and Franco - were exceptional in terms of helpfulness, recommendations, friendliness, energy and a full measure of classic Italian spirit. We would stay here again in a heartbeat.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Il Fienile is a charmingly rustic house set on a beautiful hillside in Tuscany. It was our first trip to Italy and we used the house as a base for many day trips, including Siena, Assisi, Florence, San Gimignano, Montalcino, Pienza and Montepulciano. Mimma and Franco were always available for questions, if not in person, then by email. They were great hosts and my biggest regret is that I didn't schedule a cooking class with Mimma! The property is gorgeous, with varied-length walking trails (20 minutes to an hour and a half) that we took advantage of not only for the views but to walk off some of the fabulous Italian food and wine we partook of while there! There are great restaurants in Radda(Chiasso dei Portici) and Castellina (Sotto le Volte), both less than 15 minutes away. We hope to return in the not-so-distant future (in nicer weather!) to take advantage of relaxing on their property, taking a cooking class with Mimma and staying in closer proximity so that we may visit the many nearby vineyards and oileries. Note you should arrive with breakfast items (I have to have my morning coffee!) and soap so you aren't required to make a trip to the grocery store. I'd also suggest arriving with a bottle of wine, bread, salami, etc so you can immediately begin your stay with a lovely al fresco snack. All members of our party wanted to take a seat outside as soon as we arrived. The setting and views are designed to relax. Aaaaah. I wish I were back already.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

I can attest that all previous wonderful reviews of the property, of Mimma and Franco's hospitality, and of cooking classes are 100% accurate. My husband, myself and my parents spent three peaceful nights in Ovile and couldn't have asked for more. From the cozy living space and full kitchen - which we took advantage of - to the comfy beds and well-appointed bathrooms we all enjoyed our stay immensely and were a bit sad to go! It was great communicating with Mimma throughout the booking process and she provided excellent advice for our day trips as well. This home is perfect for just about anyone seeking a relaxing and comfortable home base for exploring the beauty (and great wines!) of the Chianti region. I hope to get back some day and visit with Mimma again!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We cannot speak to Il Fienile, but just spent a week at Ovile (the smaller rental house on the property), and can vouch for it being absolutely wonderful! Franco and Mimma are lovely hosts, and a real treasure-trove of useful information, travel suggestions etc. The house itself is lovely and furnished in excellent taste, boasting two bedrooms, two bathrooms, an inexhaustible supply of hot water, and a fully equipped kitchen. We used it as a base to explore Tuscan hill towns, as well as Siena and Florence (both of which are easily accessible). You will need a car, and need not to be afraid of scenic winding roads, but the payback is impressive. We would unreservedly recommend the place for couples, families with children, or any other discriminating travellers.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: To start the season with such a wonderful review fills us with joy. Each guest at Muricciaglia is welcome as a friend and we are happy to share with each of them conversation, advice, experiences.

Our family of 4 stayed in Fienile for a week in June of 2012. We had a wonderful time, and enjoyed every bit of our time. Mimma was a fabulous host and source of information, such as dinner recommendations, sites to see in nearby villages, and directions to great wineries. My daughter and I took one of her cooking classes in her kitchen (also taught by her cousin Lele) and the experience was one of our best nights of an 8 week trip! After preparing dinner my husband and son joined us and the two other families from class to enjoy our meal on Mimma's covered lanai with a view of the local Chianti valley. We made new friends from Australia that night, and we all really left feeling like this was why we wanted to come to Tuscany! Fienile was nice and clean, with comfy beds, WIFI, quiet, and very private. We shared the pool with only one other family, which was no problem at all. They were nice, and we shared travel tips. Mimma was easy to communicate with throughout the rental process, and it was stress-free. I highly recommend taking a cooking class or two, and in retrospect my husband and son wish they'd joined in with the cooking as well. We truly hope to return someday, and we all have the fondest memories of Mimma herself, as a wonderful Italian Nonna we all wish we could have! Beautiful and ideally located between Radda and Castellina, wonderful!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

My partner and I recently returned from a week's stay at Ovile, the other rental property at Muricciaglia. It was a wonderful home to return to every night after exploring Chianti and Tuscany -- wonderful hill towns, as well as the major sites in Siena and Florence, were at most an hour away. Two charming towns -- Castellina and Radda -- are both only a few minutes away and have all the essentials (great restaurants, groceries, etc.). The rental property has all the comforts of home -- lovely kitchen, living room with great fireplace, laundry -- and wonderful views of the olive groves and surrounding hills. Mimma and Franco are excellent hosts, who kindly share their knowledge of the region, as well as a glass or two of their Chianti! We hope to return soon!Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.
Owner response: Our delightful guests were at Muricciaglia at the very end of October, the perfect time to visit Chianti, its stone villages and the beautiful cities in the surrounding area. Here the olive harvest just started and it is one of the most exciting time of the year. Olive trees in Chianti are the centerpiece of a colorful tableau and at the end of October, early November, they become the centre of life. Olives must be picked fast and brought to the mill with care to have our spicy extra virgin olive oil that will be the main ingredient of our simple but wonderful meals. Buon appetito!!

After months of research, we settled on Muricciaglia and were not disappointed. Fienile is a lovely, restored hay barn, perfect for two couples (or a small family). Each bedroom has it's own spacious bathrooom close by. Out the back kitchen door is a terrace with a table where we had breakfast most mornings. Although the living room was quite spacious and appointed with some antiques, much of our time was spent outdoors enjoying the beautiful views, peace and quiet. There are two trails on the property that we hiked most mornings (each takes a little over an hour) and would then relax with a swim in the beautiful infinity pool, planning our afternoon and evening. After spending our first week in busy Rome and Lucca, we arrived in Chianti ready to slow down the pace and enjoy Tuscany. There are many hilltowns to visit within about an hour's drive--Montalcino, San Gimignano, Castellina & Radda to name a few. There's an abundance of restaurants and wineries to visit in the area, we also cooked several evenings at home. Be sure to book an evening cooking with Mimma and the Tuscan Mamas, a highlight of our week. Our hosts, Mimma & Franco and their caretaker Dimitri all live on the property and were always available, if needed. The location and natural beauty exceeded our expectations and we would highly recommend a stay at Fienile. Mimma--Mindy and I look forward to seeing you in Maine next month!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.
Owner response: Another lovely review that makes our day a happy one! All is said and it will be great to meet again soon in your country!

How can one truly put into words the amazing feeling you get when you stay at Muricciaglia. Our family of 4 (two 18 year olds) had the pleasure to stay in Il Fienile for 7 days and wish we could have spent more. From the moment we arrived we knew we found a little taste of heaven in our Toscana villa. The pictures truly do not do it justice. Our host, Mimma, was a true gem and our lives are richer for meeting her and getting to know her. The pride they have in their property is reflected in every aspect. We enjoyed meeting her sister Franca during our cooking lesson, a time we will treasure and I highly recommend this. The private pergola was the perfect place to enjoy our family meals cooked in the well equipped kitchen. The little towns close by were a delight to explore and days trips to Florence and Pisa were an easy drive. If you pass this opportunity by you are truly missing out. We cannot wait to return to this little piece of paradise.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: From the start our aim has been to turn our guests, coming from distant places, into "family". We are proud to say that it has been working and that coming to Muricciaglia means to discover the flavor of life in Tuscany. Tuscany is a vast region of Italy and Chianti is a part of it. Chianti, the magic world of wine and extra virgin olive oil, of abbeys, ancient castles, tiny villages, will be your home far from home.

July 2012 - We just returned from a one week stay at Ovile (the smaller of the two rental houses on the property). It was AMAZING just like all the reviews said it would be! It's the perfect size house for two adults and two kids ages 8 and 13. The property is so much more beautiful than pictures can show! What makes this property so amazing? The setting is beyond beautiful, the house is charming and fully updated. The location is ideal if you want to experience the quaint small towns of Chianti (there are 3 of them within a 15 minute drive) and have day trips to Siena and Florence too. If you don't speak Italian then it helps more than I can say to have Mimma there to help you plan your daily activities in English. She pointed us in the right direction for wine tasting, cycling, restaurants, and everything else we wanted to do. She even helped set us up with Klaas a personal tour guide on our trip to Florence which was super helpful ($180 for three hours and totally worth every penny!). We also took Mimma's cooking class which was the highlight of the trip - and I don't even cook! Franco and Mimma are so warm and welcoming. It feels like they are family the minute you meet them. Enjoy your stay!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: What to say?? Just honey to our ears. It is rewarding to know, through our guests reviews, that they have been happy with us. If there are some perfect things at Muricciaglia, for sure many of our guests are perfect too!

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1995
About the owner: We have been an expatriate family for many years. Franco working with EXXON Chemicals and travelling all the time, Mimma busy teaching Italian at Bruxelles Free University and growing the family. When it was time thinking of retirement, Tuscany was chosen after a long search, thanks to a sum of 'plus' factors as weather, landscape and culture. We bought a group of ancient rural dwellings and started to restore them shaping the wild land around. The children are gone now, they have their own families and live far away. Franco is busy with the olive groves, the vineyard and the woods. We produce extra virgin olive oil, Chianti Classico grapes and firewood. I take care of our guests who are coming back year after year to enjoy the Chianti atmosphere. Often they participate to the culinary program I started back in 1996, 'Tutti a Tavola', after the age-old call to dinner used by mothers throughout Italy. From the beginning our aim has been to share our 'family cooking' but also to open our home to friends coming from distant places.
