Campbell Mountain Cabin is a classic, storybook log cabin perched in a green hollow in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina.
A single-lane dirt road curves through the old woods past breathtaking views, to the cabin. Quiet, pristine, hidden in a forested oasis of seven private acres among 200 acres of undeveloped land, the sweet two-bedroom, two-bath cabin is a romantic and utterly private retreat made for photographers, honeymooners, writers on retreat or anyone needing the revitalization that nature confers. Frasier firs soar all around the little cabin, and a clear stream tumbles down the hillside from pool to pool, running beneath an arched stone footbridge on its way to nearby Fontana Lake.
At Campbell Mountain Cabin, life’s pleasures run simple and deep. An artesian well on the property - which doubles as a wishing well - provides water so sweet and cold that you might not wish for anything more.
A rocking chair under an apple tree surveys a ravishing view down the mountainside. Inside the cabin, natural pine walls and generous windows frame the deep, vivid green of the forest and the gleam of the pond, while the stream, birds and peepers play a constant symphony. The cabin’s living and dining areas share a high-ceilinged space, anchored by a stone, wood-burning fireplace. Comfortable seating faces the fire, and French doors open to a wide, covered deck that extends out over the stream. The efficient kitchen is very well-equipped, though in warm weather the outdoor grill is often the culinary headquarters of choice, overlooking the rhododendron forest and the silvery brook. The property – a former apple orchard, terraced for planting - has been beautifully landscaped with smooth river rocks; a three-tiered waterfall and a river rock wall are sculptures in stone.
The cabin has two airy bedrooms with rustic, log queen beds; one on the lower floor and the other, with a wood burning fireplace, in a loft. The couch in the great room pulls out into a third queen size bed.
There is an outhouse on the property for tradition’s sake - complete with a crescent moon carved into the door - but the cabin itself has two fully modern baths, one with a deep jetted tub, the other with a walk-in shower. Out on the deck, the wonderful, roomy hot tub can fit up to six people. And a surround sound dry sauna on the front deck easily accommodates 2 to 3 guests at a time.
Air conditioned in summer and snug in winter, Campbell Mountain Cabin is a sanctuary at any time of year; so far out in the woods that it remains blissfully free of cable or satellite (though a well-stocked DVD movie library is provided).
Country barbecues around the fire-pit are a beloved Campbell Mountain Cabin institution, especially with the bluegrass accompaniment of local musicians. Private chefs can provide authentic, delicious Carolina fare for gatherings of up to 12 people, for - though wild turkeys, deer, owls and eagles are the cabin’s most regular visitors – Campbell Mountain Cabin is a truly fabulous place to throw a party.
Spring comes early in the Great Smokies, and the woods burst into legendary flower. It is a sublime time of year, the air soft and fragrant, the night thrumming with stars and cricket-song. This is an old and historic area, and there is much to do at the cabin and beyond.
Hiking and cross country skiing is available right from the property, and tubing down Deep Creek, kayaking the famed Nantahala Gorge, riding the Great Smoky Mountain Railway, rock climbing, tennis, photography, swimming, hunting, and boating are very close by.
The area is known as 'the fishing mecca of the Southeast.' There are 26 Swain County fishing locations included in the 4 rivers, dozens of mountain streams and two large lakes. The shops, restaurants, museums and theatres of Bryson City, nearby Sylva, Waynesville and Asheville are just a short drive away, as are Civil War sites, Indian Reservations, Harrah’s Cherokee Casino and even a year-round theme park called “Santa's Land” - highly popular with the younger set.
Keywords: Log Cabin with picturesque river rock accents on a secluded 7-acre private, natural habitat with a babbling brook, private walking & hiking trails, 5,000 Fraiser Fir Christmas trees with 15-year old growth, breathtaking mountain views within walking distance, an artesian wising well on the property, perfect for couples, photographers, honeymooners, families and for family reunions.

Year Purchased: 2001
About the owner: As newlyweds, Dale and Robbie Campbell discovered this unique property in September of 2001 and have continued to add new landscape and trees surrounding the Cabin each year. Dale owned a Charleston construction company and Robbie currently has an Atlanta-based strategic marketing consulting firm. Their creative talents and passion for a wonderful and secluded Mountain environment has resulted in a one-of-a-kind vacation spot.
Why the Owner Chose Bryson City:
We believe that Campbell Mountain is the most beautiful place on earth -- smack in the middle of some of the oldest mountains in the world. Bryson City is located in a natural rain forest and thus is enveloped in a variety of shades of lush green foliage most of the year. Wildflowers, a wide variety of tall trees and the surrounding bird sanctuary are reasons enough to include seasonal visits to Campbell Mountain.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
Private walking trails, within walking distance of views of The Great Smoky Mountains National Forest, cascading waterfalls and ponds, a babbling brook and artesian well, seclusion, outdoor hot tub and firepit, a restful spot that is perfect for photographers, honeymooners, family getaways or a concentrated writing or reading retreat. There are no other homes visible from 'Campbell Mountain'. As a licensed boat captain, Dale can easily arrange for fishing expeditions or a white water or Lake adventure for you and your guests.
