ABOUT THE HOUSE
This is a custom-designed and custom-built house, in the Arts & Crafts style of Greene & Greene. The land was purchased in 1999 and construction began in July of 2000. Master carpenters, masons, cabinet makers, fireplace builders, tilers and metal workers labored for 18 months to create this work. The Great Room's dramatic ceiling soars 28 feet, supporting a wall of glass framed by five Douglas Fir columns, but then it descends to eight feet, to create a warm and inviting feeling around the hearth. The beam joinery is custom; all floors and doors and cabinetry are quarter-sawn oak. Off the Great Room are the entrances to the Library and the Master Suite. The open common area from the Great Room also leads to the kitchen.
Bedroom configuration: Master Suite is downstairs and has 1 king bed, stone fireplace, it's own private exterior entrance, ceramic tile bath with whirlpool and steam shower and double sinks. Attached to the suite is a hall leading past a wet bar to the sitting room, which is convertible to a dormitory for 1-4 children using inflatable aero beds. The view is to the east, with an unobstructed view of the sunrise and the lake.
Upstairs are four bedrooms. The Yellow Room contains a four-poster queen bed and exterior door to a balcony facing north. The Southwest Room contains a pull-out queen bed and stone fireplace after a Greene & Greene design, and an exterior entrance and balcony viewing east and the lake. The Nautical Room has two twin beds and exterior door and balcony with a view to the east and the lake. The Pine Room is lined with inch-thick knotty pine boards and has two twin beds.

THE BEACH AND NEARBY ATTRACTIONS
It is a short walk to the beach, the path to which is lighted at night. We have 300 feet of sand beach frontage on Lake Michigan, shallow 600 feet out, so flat-bottom boats, kayaks, canoes and sailboats with centerboards can be launched right from our shore. The beach can also be used for nightly fires, which are easy to build. Beach chairs, umbrellas and sand toys are available in the garage.
We are located across the street from The Town Hall Bakery, the best bakery in Door County. Jacksonport also has one grocery, two standalone pub-restaurants and one restaurant in the motel on the same side of the street as the house; the Craft Cottage is across the street from and north of us, and is the place to get lists of activities in Door County and maps. Also see the visitors' center in Baileys Harbor, about 15 minutes' drive north on 57.
Cave Point County Park and Whitefish Dunes State Park are a bicycle ride to the south of us on Cave Point Drive. Both are excellent outings for hiking which could easily take you 4-5 hours to see the entire area. A 10 minute ride south and west of us is Kurtz Coral, riding stables for horseback riding at all levels. Between Jacksonport and Baileys Harbor is Maxwelton Braes golf course. A short ride north, past Baileys Harbor, on County Q, you find two outdoor hiking venues: The Ridges, a nature sanctuary, and Cana Island Lighthouse, which you can tour and picnic under. If fishing is your passion, the causeway off County E is good at dawn and dusk; if you want the thrill of big fish, there is charter fishing and a boat ramp in Baileys Harbor.
The best hiking park is Newport State Park, which is less crowded than popular Peninsula State Park; the best trails for cross-country skiing are at Whitefish Dunes State Park. Best rugged climbing/hiking is found in the Headlands County Park just south of Gils Rock; best camping is at Rock Island, you will take two ferry boats to get there.
We highly recommend Door Shakespeare, an outdoor theater at Bjorklunden, just south of Baileys Harbor, about 10 minutes' drive from the house on 57. For wide range of theater, Peninsula Players in Fish Creek is the venerable summer stock theater where many nationally famous actors got their beginning.
Restaurants: Donny's Glidden Lodge Restaurant for best escargot; White Gull Inn in Fish Creek for breakfast and fish boils; Mission Grille in Sister Bay for fresh fish, Inn at Cedar Crossing in Sturgeon Bay for best cherry pancakes; and best hamburgers and malts/ice cream is at Wilson's in Ephraim; Al Johnson's in Sister Bay for the best Swedish food, including pancakes.
For groceries, please plan to stop at Pic-N-Save in Sturgeon Bay on your way to the house; it's a full service grocery and liquor store; there is a smaller Piggly Wiggly store just south of Sister Bay on 42

Our family has enjoyed Nelson House for a week the last two summers and look forward to our third stay this coming summer of 2013. Our group ranges in size from 7-11 people. There is space for peacful reflection - from catching the sunrise on the beach to a quiet bench in the woods to a nook in the house. There is also plenty of space for family - from games around the hearth to the pool table in the loft to lots of time on the amazing beach! Another great feature is the large dining table where we have family meals with great food and conversation. And, we cannot forget the bakery across the road and the welcome treat that the Nelson's had for us upon arrival! This special touch is really a perfect example of the relationship the owner's create with their guests - they are very thoughtful, timely and thorough in all aspects of making arrangements with their guests. The Door (County) is great for excursions to meet everyone's interest - Nelson House is the perfect "home base" for all of these adventures. We have hiked at Whitefish Dunes State Park, enjoyed amazing meals at the Whistling Swan, The Cookery, Alexander's and more, fed our sweet tooth with Door County cherries, picked out fresh fish at Hickey Brothers, shopped for treasures on the busy side of the Door and much, much more. The setting of the house is pleasantly wooded and secluded. The sandy beach and water are absolutely amazing - shallow for lots of playing in the water, as well as, football or soccer on the beach. We always feel renewed after the vacation at Nelson House. I would wholeheartedly recommend Nelson House to anyone looking for a beautiful space and lots of opportunity for relaxation and exploration!Recommended for: Girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing, people with disabilities, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, age 55+.
Owner response: Paula, Thank you so much for the kind review. Nelson House is a place for families like yours to come together and reunite even while individual members enjoy different aspects of the house and Door County in their own individual ways. Thank you for being our guests.

Our party of ten stayed at Nelson House for a week in July 2012. The home was a true delight and was the perfect place to spend a relaxing week by Lake Michigan. The home is exactly as described. We couldn’t have asked for more— from the “welcome home” cherry pie waiting for us at the bakery across the street to the crisp and clean linens— everything was picture perfect! We enjoyed our stay so much that we are talking about a return visit next summer.Recommended for: Girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing, people with disabilities, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, age 55+.
Owner response: David, Thank you for your wonderful review! The house is meant for those like you who appreciate it from all aspects. You were a wonderful guest and we look forward to seeing you again sometime soon.
