Città di Castello is a small, very ancient walled town on the banks of the Upper River Tiber, which rises in the mountains to the north of the town. Indoor and outdoor cafès and restaurants enliven the little streets and the central piazza, and invite visitors to enjoy the evening after-dinner passegiata - the traditional socializing stroll around the town. Live music in the piazza is a common event on summer evenings, and a weekly farmers' market is also a busy social occasion. A smaller antiques market is held most week-ends. A recreation center with indoor and outdoor swimming pools is on the outskirts of the town. Tennis, thermal spa, health and beauty treatments are also available nearby, in the spacious public park-like grounds of a resort hotel. Its location provides easy access to both Tuscany and Umbria, and the many famous picturesque hill-towns of both regions - Siena, Montepulciano, Cortona, the Chianti area in Tuscany, and Assisi, Gubbio, Montone, Perugia, Orvieto and Todi in Umbria. An easy drive to Arezzo, on the main rail-line between Florence and Rome, makes it possible to enjoy a car-free visit to both those historic cities. Arezzo itself is an ancient and cosmopolitan city, famous for its gold jewelry, its monthly international antiques street fair, and renowned frescoes in the Church of San Francesco. A pleasant 'day on the beach' is convenient at Passignano, on the north shore of Lago Trasimeno, west of Perugia. Ferries cross the lake to little islands, and to Castiglione del Lago, with its ruined castle on a promontory south-west of Passignano. Further south-west still is Chiusi Scalo, with a national Etruscan museum and a chance to visit frescoed Etruscan tombs. Not only is Assisi a must-see for guests, but your route passes the cathedral of Santa Maria degli Angeli, within sight of Assisi itself. This cathedral houses the restored original church built by St Francis of Assis, a tiny gem, a shrine for pilgrims, and a complete contrast to the magnificence of the huge cathedral in Assisi itself. In the mountains north of Città di Castello is La Verna, a beautiful working monastery where Francis and his followers would go in retreat. You can see the slab of rock which was his bed, and the chapel marking the spot where he received the stigmata on his hands. They walked over the hills from Assisi to La Verna, and today you may see modern pilgrims following his route, which passes right by Colcello itself. Near La Verna is Caprese Michelangelo, the birthplace of Michelangelo himself. You can visit the room in which he was born, and the tiny chapel of his baptism. The nearby little town of Anghiari, with its precipitous Roman road diving down into the Tiber valley, is portrayed in one of his famous paintings. Sight-seeing can be tiring! When you need it, Colcello offers a beautiful and welcoming place to relax when you'd just like to kick back, splash in the pool, read, eat and drink, maybe go to town for a cocktail and dinner, and count the stars before you go to bed! Benvenuti! ...morecollapse

                              Owner info

                              Year Purchased: 1988

About the owner: Hello! My name is Ann, and I'm a 'Brit' - English/American dual citizenship, easy-going,sociable, and very happy to welcome guests to my home in Italy. I live in northern California in winter (in the snow!) and in Italy in the summer, making new friends among my guests. Long-time friends are my Italian neighbours in the valley below Colcello, who have taught me to speak their 'Castellani' version of Italian, how to make pasta, and many other very useful things! I lived at Colcello for many years, until I married an American. Colcello is an old house, home to many generations of Italian farmers and peasants, and it is my pleasure to share it with my guests. I have a small private apartment on the ground floor, so I am easily accessible to help with any information you may need, or problems to be solved, without encroaching on your privacy.

Why the Owner Chose Citta di Castello:
Italy is a popular vacation destination for guests from many parts of the world, which is how I first came to know this country. The warmth and friendliness of the people, the food, the history, the art, the climate, the traditions, all played their part in casting the spell that made the purchase of Colcello a joy. It needed a lot of work to make it comfortable by today's standards, but the stunning location made it well worthwhile. It's a very old house, dating back to 1675, in an ancient area - once occupied by Roman soldiers! Pieces of old Roman roof tiles are sometimes turned up when the olive terraces are plowed! History surrounds Colcello.

The Unique Benefits at this Chateau / Country House:
When you arrive at Colcello, the main parking area is at the rear of the house, sheltered by encircling trees and around a beautiful central lime tree. It is when you proceed to the front of the house and the main arched-porch entry, that the stunning views really strike you. Then it's difficult to decide whether to look at the house or the views! Inside the porchway is the old bread-oven, and frescoes over the arched entrance spell 'Benvenuti' - painted over the archway. That word spells home to me, and welcome to my guests. Rows of olive trees stretch in front of the house - some like gnarled old men wearing leafy branches like toupèes, some young and new that will never fruit in my lifetime - wave another welcome. The feeling of inhabiting, if only for a short time, a house and place which has seen many generations and historic centuries come and go, is one that not everyone has the chance to experience, and is one that I treasure.
