Floor-to-ceiling windows and an open layout maximize the home’s incredible 180-degree views of Mt. Elbert, Hope Pass and the glacial waters of Twin Lakes.
Guests can listen to the buzz of summertime hummingbirds while sitting on the expansive flagstone patio. Or watch as a red fox explores fresh snow right outside the master bedroom window. Soak in Colorado flora and fauna at its finest!

Centrally located, a 30-minute drive reaches some of Colorado’s famous mountain towns, including Leadville and Buena Vista. The drive to Ski Cooper is 27 miles and does not require 4-wheel drive. In summer/fall months, make a day trip to Aspen by means of the world-famous Independence Pass (a 1 hour drive).
The Wolf Den is an excellent place for Leadville 100 race participants and their families. Our driveway is located off of the Leadville Trail 100 MTB race course — a great spot for a cheer squad. The Leadville Trail 100 Run traces through the Twin Lakes aid station, just minutes away from the house. On race night, you can watch the glow of athletes’ headlamps as they travel Hope Pass.
In addition to welcoming small- to medium-sized dogs upon approval (with a $175 fee), the Wolf Den is also kid and baby friendly. Parents of small children can access 2 portable cribs, 2 booster seats for dining and a supply of toys and books carefully curated by our toddler.
During summer and fall months, the wide flagstone patio and adjacent outdoor pavilion serve as excellent outdoor wedding settings for couples seeking a stunning mountain backdrop to their big day. The patio seats up to 100 guests during ceremonies, and our outdoor pavilion can host seated meals for about 75 family members and friends. (A venue fee does apply.) PLEASE NOTE: Due to high demand, we are **no longer booking weddings in 2018.** We ARE accepting wedding bookings for the summer/fall 2019 season. Please click "Contact Owner" to inquire about weddings at the Wolf Den.
The “Den” is our family’s basecamp for backcountry Colorado adventure, and we hope you will consider it for your next Colorado getaway or ski vacation.

About Gretchen Sparling
Greetings! We're the Sparling family. We've traveled across Colorado and beyond, and we keep coming back to Twin Lakes for its stunning views, endless dirt trails and soaring mountain summits. Although we're used to calling a tent our vacation "home," as parents we found that having a comfortable basecamp close to the action and large enough for a crowd suits our family best. We're excited to share this incredible mountain home with others.
Gretchen Sparling purchased this House in 2017
Why Gretchen Sparling chose Twin Lakes
This property, which we call the Wolf Den, was custom-designed by a local couple in 2005. A thoughtful floor plan maximizes the 180-degree views of Mt. Elbert, Parry Peak, Hope Pass and the waters of Twin Lakes. You can't beat these views! Proximity to the area's many trailheads, including the area's many 14ers, was a critical selling point for our family. Unlike many homes in the Twin Lakes area, the Wolf Den comfortably hosts several families at once — sleeping as many as 14 guests — and yet each couple will feel as if they have ample space and privacy. The main living spaces allow our large extended family and friends to spend evenings sharing meals, playing card games or simply sitting around reliving the day's adventures on the trail. Under our family's new ownership, the home features a renovated kitchen with modern appliances, comfortable seating both indoors and outdoors, all-new linens and more. Guests who stay at the Wolf Den will experience modern interior design balanced with the comfort and seclusion of a mountain cabin.
What makes this House unique
While we like to spend most of our time kicking up dirt on the miles of Twin Lakes trails, the great thing about this house is that you can experience the flora and fauna of beautiful Colorado without leaving the comfort of home. In early morning, sit on the back porch with a hot mug of coffee and you can watch the home's colony of chipmunks or you might be lucky enough to see a curious red fox. From the living room sofa, guests can gaze at the peak of Elbert — no trail shoes required. During fall, the home's enclave of golden aspen will brighten your days. Choose to kick back and relax at home, or head out to the area's many attractions, from fishing, paddling, rafting, hiking, skiing and so much more.

Gorgeous place for a family vacation
Our extended family enjoyed a wonderful stay at the Wolf Den over Easter/spring break. We had six adults and six kids ranging from 3 month old twins to age 14 and the flow of the house worked perfectly... everyone had their own space with plenty of room to get together as a group. The touches in the home are lovely - nice beds, sheets, towels, furnishings, and the best stocked kitchen of any rental home that we've visited. We all enjoyed the hot tub every day. And the view - wow. From watching the sun come up over the mountains to watching a winter storm move in, it truly needs to be seen to be believed.
The location of the Wolf Den is great as well. We went sledding and shopping in Leadville (and to the Leadville urgent care when our little guy got sick - not fun but nice to have not too far away); skied Cooper, Monarch, and Breck; hiked to the Tennessee Pass Cookhouse for dinner (totally worth it); and explored the Twin Lakes themselves. When we didn't feel like going out, we loved sitting by the fireplace inside or roasting marshmallows in the fire pit outside.
Our only complaint was the trash situation - you have to sort your own trash and recyclables and then drive them out to the trash facility, which took more time than anticipated and just wasn't a very fun way to end the trip.
Trash notwithstanding, the Wolf Den is a lovely home in a gorgeous location and we will always have wonderful memories of our time spent there as a family. Oh, and Gretchen, the owner, was very helpful and responsive throughout the whole process, from booking to checkout. Thank you, Gretchen, for a fabulous stay!
Beautiful home with amazing view!
Our "Wolfpack" of 4 families stayed at the Wolf Den for Spring Break. It was perfect for our large group. We never felt crowded and had plenty of room to spread out. We enjoyed the amazing view of Mt. Elbert by the fire pit and hot tub outside, and the kids loved exploring the property. The house was clean and kitchen had everything we needed for cooking. The kids enjoyed the complimentary hot chocolate, apple cider and selection of hot tea! The house had toys, lots of games and movies for the kids too. Ski Cooper was an easy 30 minute drive through Leadville, where we could pick up groceries or grab pizza for dinner. We loved the Wolf Den and look forward to future stays here!
So glad you guys enjoyed your time at the Wolf Den! We'd love to have your "wolfpack" back anytime! :) -Gretchen
Perfect for family getaway
The Wolf Den is such a great property and an incredible value! We stayed with my sister/brother in law, my parents and our kids, 12 total. We had plenty of room for everyone. The kids loved playing in the snow and made a mini sled ramp on the sprawling property. We enjoyed s'mores and hanging out on the patio and enjoying the amazing views each day. We hiked behind Twin Lakes one day and made the short trip to Leadville for skiing. The house is super tidy, and very well stocked, with everything you could possibly need and more. And Gretchen was very easy to work with, checked in on us and responded quickly with any questions. About the only suggestion I could make would be to take your trash out during daylight hours. My husband and brother in law went at night and had a hard time finding it since it was not lit up, but this is not the owner's fault.
I'm pretty sure we'll be returning here! Thank you for sharing your home with us!
Thank you, Celina! I'm so glad your Texas kiddos got to experience snow on our property. We appreciate the excellent feedback you mention about visiting the trash-drop site during daylight hours, and will be sure to share this tip with future guests. We hope you visit again soon! -Gretchen
This property was everything we wanted. Three families with a total of 5 kids enjoyed the property and all the amenities. It was well furnished, there was plenty to do in and around the area, and was easy to get to. Unbelievable views! Gretchen was great to work with. Already planning our next visit.
Thank you so much, Greg! We’d love to have you stay again. -Gretchen
Beautiful home with BEAUTIFUL views!
This is a cozy, yet spacious, home with gorgeous geography surrounding it.
Thanks for staying at the Wolf Den, Shelley!
My kids and I had a wonderful time at Twin Lakes! The house was everything we needed and more for a quiet celebration. Thank you for sharing this wonderful place with us. We'll be back!
Thanks for staying at the Wolf Den, Faythe! Hope you and your family come and visit again soon. -Gretchen
