Overview

About the property

1 mile long Makaha Beach is a U-shaped bay with shallow coral reefs on two sides

Perfect for 2, 3 or 4 guests. Walk out the gate directly onto famous Makaha Surfing Beach. Great for honeymoons and family vacations. Our Oceanside Bungalow is 700 square feet with 2 air conditioned bedrooms, 1 bathroom, living room and a fully equipped kitchen. Boogie boards, snorkel gear, beach chairs, umbrellas, are all available in the cabana next to the bungalow. Go snorkeling with the sea turtles right off the beach. Do a little Whale Watching from the front yard….migrating season is late December thru March, or just enjoy a good book while swinging in the hammock. Sunsets you ask.....absolutely!

Makaha Beach is truly the hidden jewel of Oahu. You are only 35 miles north west of Honolulu airport away from all of the crowds. Makaha Beach is famous for surfing dating back to the 50's but there is also great snorkeling and just plain lying on the beach in the sun.

If you are looking for a great location with a beautiful secluded beach and basic accommodations, this place is for you. Our Oceanside Bungalow shares the front yard, (which also overlooks the ocean) along with the beach equipment found in the cabana with our Mountainside Bungalow.

Barbecue on the front lawn and eat under the 100+ year old Hau tree, the perfect place to enjoy those beautiful Hawaiian sunsets. There is a grill outside your bungalow and you will find charcoal and lighter fluid in the cabana.

This is really "local" Hawaii. The Makaha Country Club is 1.5 miles away for golf and there is great deep sea fishing out of the Waianae Harbor 2.5 miles away. There are no bars or restaurants in our neighborhood. The closest 4 star restaurants (rated by google, facebook and trip advisor) are 3 miles down the road. Coquitos Latin Cuisine and Kahumana Organic Farm and Cafe. 30 minutes down the road you will find many more great restaurants.

You will have a relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable time here at The Bungalows. We have two bungalows on our property, we trust that you will respect your fellow guest. The entire property is for everyone to enjoy

About Lisa and Ken

Makaha is our favorite place in the whole world and we have traveled to many, many places. Until we are able to retire to our lovely beach, we hope that others can enjoy our wonderful community and lifestyle here on Westside Oahu

Lisa and Ken purchased this house in 2003

Why Lisa and Ken chose Mākaha

Beautiful trade wind breezes throughout the day. Mostly dry with occasional rain showers. The best sunsets! A quiet relaxing large beach where you will see some of the locals teaching their kids how to swim and surf.

What makes this house unique

One of the most quiet, relaxing, clean beaches in all of Oahu. Lots of ocean life to enjoy; you can swim with sea turtles and tropical fish, watch the whales as they breach the water during migrating season, and snorkel the coral reef.

Beautiful spot! Highly recommend it!

First of all, Mahalo to Lisa and Ken for a great stay!

The bungalow is was exactly what we were hoping for. The house was clean and nicely furnished, the kitchen was well equipped, we had access to outside BBQs, there is a cabana with beach items for your use- the hosts were kind enough to allow us to borrow items when we were going to other beaches, as well- and there is a small well maintained yard with a hammock and an awesome tree, with the beach right on the other side of a short hedge. Lisa and Ken were very accommodating and helpful while we were there.

The beach right out in front is beautiful and usually almost deserted (there was a surfing competition while we were there, so it was a little busy on the weekend, but was otherwise empty most of the time). The waves coming in can get a little big; my fiance and I didnt have an issue with them, however, they knocked my 6 year old right over (granted, she is kinda tiny). That being said, there is a beach park on a cove less than 10 minutes down the road where the surf is gentle- problem solved.

Downsides: the bungalow is kind of close to the road, and although traffic isn't particularly heavy, the road noise can be a little loud. There are earplugs provided, though, and came in very useful. The only other thing I would bring up is the water pressure in the shower: the water pressure left a little to be desired. The sand is SUUPER sticky, and the weak water pressure made getting the sand off a bit of an ordeal at times (my child made it her mission to coat herself in sand EVERY time we got within 5 ft of a beach...it was interesting). Better water pressure and maybe a detachable shower head would make the post-beach clean up a little easier.

All of that being said, overall, our stay was awesome and would highly recommend the bungalow to anyone looking to stay outside of the more heavily populated, city areas.

Mahalo and Aloha to Hawaii, Lisa, and Ken! Thanks again for a great adventure!

The beach, bungalow and lawn area are perfect for a quiet getaway.

The beach was the nicest on the island from our experience. We took a day and a half and visited many beaches and this one was our favourite. The bungalow has everything you need upon arrival but if you are cooking many of your meals, extra garbage bags, paper towel and dish detergent is recommended when you make your grocery trip.

The community is very poor and feels a bit intimidating given the homelessness near by. It is not a place for an evening stroll. Though, once you enter the gate to the property, it is your perfect oasis.

Everything you need, right on the beach

  • 5 of 5

Bungalow was well stocked with the basics (dishes, tv, towels, etc) and also lots of little extras (beach equipment, thoughtful stuff like bug spray or ear plugs that you may have forgotten). The bungalow was clean and bright, steps from a sandy beach -- the section in front of the house is practically a private beach.

The hosts openly note that this side of the island is less touristy, and that was the case -- but we knew and expected that. If you want fancy dinners on the town and lots of shopping, this likely isn't your place. If you want to lounge around on the beach, enjoy sunsets and coffee away from the hubbub - this place will do the trick. It felt safe and protected, behind a gate and with security cameras.

The surf was pretty high in January, so I wouldn't necessarily count on this place to be great snorkeling right out your door unless you are ok with some pretty sketchy water -- I'm sure different times of year are better.

I can't think of much that the place could do for improvement honestly. It was just what we were looking for. The hosts were away for our visit (they live just feet away), but they were very responsive. They give you plenty of information about the area and things to do/food etc. I felt like the place was exactly as described and we had a wonderful stay.

Too bad Carlitos was closed on Sunday night, but still had a good dinner in town. Nice to have all the beach amenities and since located on the beach a great spot to just kick back. Soccer tourney went good, so see what happens next year with the team! maybe we will be back!

Beautiful home on an amazing and quiet beach

  • 5 of 5

First of all: Lisa and Ken are wonderful people.

The bungalow is well equipped and maintained and Lisa and Ken are even asking for further suggestions to make it even better.

We had the bungalow on the ocean side and it was truly amazing! Direct view to the sea and wonderful shady tree with a hammock.

And we loved the direct access to the beach and the awesome sunsets.

The bungalows are located on the west coast of O'ahu. There is just one long highway down to Makaha, but if you love it original and not touristy, this is the right coast for you. For this you will be rewarded with dreamlike and almost empty beaches and a beautiful coastline.

If we come to O'ahu again (we will someday!), we would stay here again - without hesitation.

Mahalo Lisa & Ken for wonderful weeks.

German greetings from Alex & Dirk
