Town: Just four miles south of Skipton, in the Aire Valley, along the Leeds to Liverpool canal, is the charming village of Farnhill. There are still some structures in the village that date back to the 17th century, and there are many more from the 19th century, when it was a thriving centre for lead mining and hand loom weaving. In addition to having a top-notch neighbourhood pub, Farnhill is close to Cross Hills, which is home to a variety of historic inns, shops and fine dining establishments. The area's mainline train station also offers convenient access to Leeds, Skipton and the well-known Settle-Carlisle Railway line. As "The Gateway to the Dales," nearby Skipton is home to an old castle, a stunning mediaeval parish church, and a vibrant market that fills the cobblestone "setts" on either side of the high street. Take a typical barge ride down a canal, or go to Embsay Steam Railway, which offers weekend steam train excursions on a regular basis.
