Located on the scenic North shore of Kauai, in Kilauea at the doorstep of the luxurious Princeville Resort lies Hale Mana, a three acre multi-million dollar private estate. Hawaiian for 'house of spiritual awakening' Hale Mana does not disappoint.
This plantation style home is perched high on a volcanic ridge with pristine, 360-degree views of the ocean, valley, mountains, waterfalls and river below. The valley itself is home to numerous ancient 'heiaus' or 'places of worship,' so sacred only the high priests and chieftains were allowed. Back on property you will discover "Kahelelani" or "Stairway To Heaven" where you can picnic, meditate or simply behold the breath taking beauty from this unique observation point 200 feet above the river valley floor. Or chose to relax in the incredibly stunning Zen Meditation Garden. The valley is also home to a National Wildlife Refuge protecting rare and endangered avian species. During the day tropicbirds, frigates, albatross, and nenes circle high above the home as if to form a halo. And at nightfall, under a giant dome of starry wilderness, you can drift off to sleep to the melody of the nearby waterfalls. One of the most unique and pristine properties on the planet - Kauai at its best!
All told, Kauai is NOT the hustle-bustle of Honolulu or the touristy madness of Maui. To visit Kauai and Hale Mana is to travel back in time to a bygone era, to a more peaceful and provincial existence, where words like on-ramps, freeways, and smog have yet to taint the universal consciousness. It’s a sanctuary where skyscrapers are replaced by palm trees and busy intersections with one-lane bridges. And following closely in step are the islands most precious natural resource... its' people. For them, words like community, family and neighbor are still spoken with reverence. Mainlanders call this warm phenomenon the 'Aloha Spirit' and it’s as certain to welcome and embrace you at Hala Mana as are the prevailing trade winds.

The house was spacious, clean, and well-maintained. But you really just need to rent this house for the views! The location feels secluded and private, and there are amazing views in different directions all around the property (including from the outdoor shower). We loved watching the sun rise, the egrets fly by, and the clouds float up from the river. We were patting ourselves on the back all week for being in such a great spot.
If there is a Paradise on Earth
Stunning 270 degree views made us want to stay much longer than we booked. No need to tour the island, just stay here and enjoy! The photos are nice, the reality better. Thank you Neal and Barbara for sharing your house. We thoroughly enjoyed it!
Awesome, outstanding location!!
The property was awesome... the view of the mountains, stream, and ocean was amazing! Seeing and hearing the falls was equally outstanding! The house itself was great for our party, and the location is close to Princeville for easy access to the north and east areas of the island.
Family Get Away
The photo's don't do Hale Mana justice! The views were beautiful and the location very peaceful and secluded but close enough to town. It was wonderful to watch the sunrise every morning. The house was very comfortable, clean and well equipped. I would definitely recommend this property!!
Perfect place for a special celebration!
We were looking for a special unforgettable rental home for a special occasion and found this home on VRBO. The location was great and very private, far away from the main roads but not too far to be inconvenient. The scenery was spectacular no matter where you looked. There is a beautiful waterfall that can be viewed from the bathtub in the master bathroom suite and from a balcony overlooking the waterfall and river. In the other direction you can see the ocean and lush tropical foliage. If you are looking for beach front, this is not the place for you.
The bedrooms were spacious and well decorated, along with the living and dining rooms. The kitchen has just about everything you can ask for for a place to cook away from home and a newer Webber barbecue by the outdoor shower.
The owners have plenty of towels and beach chairs available for use, along with an ice chest which came in handy many times. There is an outdoor shower that is great for using when you return from the beach to get any loose sand off, or just to use for a relaxing shower.
If I had to provide any potentially negative comments, I would only say the home does not have air conditioning so yo are dependent on the trade-winds to cool the house and night. For the most part we were very comfortable, but on a couple of nights it was a bit muggy as the trade-winds had dies down due to some abnormal conditions. Definitely not a deal breaker for us.
If I were to provide any recommendation to the owners, I would suggest adding an infinity edge pool facing the beach if it is possible. I'm guessing due to the makeup of the ground underneath, it might be extremely difficult to excavate for a pool, but it would be beautiful.
Thanks so much for the 5-Star rating...it means everything to us. As homeowners we want you vacation to be the best ever and strive diligently to make that possible. Regarding your concerns, less than 1% of the homes on Kauai have air conditioning. With ample, cooling trade winds during the summer months (95% of the time) it is generally not needed. We apologize for that 5% window during which you experienced some mugginess. As for a potential pool on property we have certainly considered it. But we are on an island surrounded by crystal clear warm water and more beaches per mile than any other Hawaiian island. The real deal breaker, however, is an abundance of island toads, who quickly make any local pool there new vacation home!
My wife, three kids (9, 9, 12) and I had an absolutely fabulous time at Hale Mana. The spectacular views must be seen to be believed. In one direction, you look up into the wooded valley with waterfalls below and cloud-topped mountains in the distance and in the other you follow the stream through more lush vegetation out to the ocean. We had stunning sunrises every day and lots of rainbows (I get the license plates now). And the beautiful wraparound lanai is the perfect place to just sit outside and stare. I'm a shutterbug and took dozens of pictures just around the house; I couldn't stop. My wife's favorite spot was the secluded part of the lanai right outside the master suite. It was hard to get her out of the lounge chair there where she'd read, drink tea and listen to the waterfalls below. We also really enjoyed the house itself. It's impeccably cared for, very well equipped and very comfortable. There was nothing we needed that Neal and Barbara hadn't provided for. They are great hosts. Neal met us at the house when we arrived and gave us a warm welcome and a quick tour. He was quick with helpful suggestions and answers to the couple of questions we had during our stay. We can't say enough good things about Hale Mana. Kauai is like an amazing secret garden at the end of the Earth and Hale Mana fits right in.
