Mark purchased this House in 1972
Why Mark chose Hanalei
River Estate is a completely unique experience. The property location on North Kauai is in arguably one of the nicest areas of the whole state and quite possibly the world. Because there had always been interest in short term renting here I decided to turn both homes into a vacation rentals. There are certain places on the island and in Hawaii that are so special that people from all over the world have heard about them and have a desire to visit them. Not only is Kauai so very special, I believe Hanalei and the surrounding area is the very best Kauai has to offer. Although I have lived here for 50 years I have not forgotten the feelings I first felt when I arrived here. These are the experiences that lock this place in peoples hearts and minds and keeps bringing them back. It isn't the things you do here but the actual island itself, it's charm and it's local people that bring visitors back time and time again.
What makes this House unique
The primary benefits of River Estate are the seclusion and privacy of the expansive botanical gardens and its special location in the scheme of things here on the north shore of Kauai. It's very close to all the world famous beaches north Kauai is noted for and central between Hanalei and the end of the road at Ke'e Beach yet its very private and secluded. You'll relax and rejuvenate your spirit here. The fact you can use the river to access the beach from the house and ocean is not offered by any other vacation rental on Kauai. The privacy and natural setting allow our guests to experience a truly relaxing and rewarding time away from their normal lives and leaves a lasting impression of what some consider to be true paradise. Not many rental homes are kept in the condition that the Guest House is kept in and our guests reflect that in their reviews. We're proud of that. It's our stock in trade so to speak. The property proximity to the spectacular natural attractions of North Kauai and its quiet natural setting help it to stand out among the other rental properties in the area. Come see for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

The house was beautiful. Mark (the owner) was very responsive to any question we had. The place is pretty big and would be perfect for a family.
Thank you for taking the time to write a review Megan.
First of all, Mark was an exceptional host. Probably one of the best we have ever had for VRBO and Airbnb rentals. Second, the place was immaculate. We stayed in the Riverhouse with the hot tub. Super clean and very well maintained. Plus the decor was very aesthetic and the bed in the master bedroom was one of the most comfortable beds we have ever slept in. However, there were a few things that were a little less than perfect. The hot tub was not very hot. Just warm...however the shower in the master bath has amazing water pressure/massage and hot. Also, although the house is mostly quiet and private, there is a road on the other side of the small river beside the house that has minimal local residential traffic. Also, the bridge on the main road is nearby and slight distant noise is heard from the cars driving over the metal plate on one of the bridges. All in all the house was amazing and that region of the island was beautiful. We had bicycles and stand up paddle boards delivered (Mark arranged this) and we were able to bike to the beach and botanical garden. Also, you can paddle board just a short distance to the beach. We would certainly recommend this house for a peaceful, enjoyable and restful vacation. Thank you Mark for being such an attentive host. You are one of the best!
Mahalo Van. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. ♥
Slow yourself down
Mark was on point from the moment I booked the rental, he contacted me with in hours of booking. The rental was exactly as described and very well priced compared to surrounding properties. We drove the traffic was never an issue, I visited 7 different beaches on Kauia the best on the island is 5 min drive. Great shopping and dining within ten minutes. It's a special place while visiting I forgot what day it was many times even offered Mark a new 2700sgft home, 40 acres, cattle and 3 rental properties even trade all I got was a giggle out of him, oh and by the way he has some great beach equipment and we left two floaties they are great for use in the river. I'll be back, the secrets everyone is looking for in Kauia can be found at the river estate -the Johnson's,Tryon Oklahoma
Mahalo for taking the time to review your stay Jessie. I appreciate your kind words. Aloha. ♥
This was our family's first trip to Hawai'i and we're so lucky to have found this special spot. The property is far enough away from touristy spots that you feel like you've got your only little slice of tropical paradise. The house and grounds were immaculate. The amenities (pots, pans, appliances, dinnerware, toilet tissue, etc) were more than adequate. We loved seeing and hearing birds and geckos. The stream behind the house attracted herons and ducks. The flowering plants and fruit trees attracted cardinals and white-eyes. We also loved the extra dark night sky that let us see the Milky Way with the naked eye and a zillion stars that you don't normally get to see in populated areas.
For folks that come after us you should know...
The property is tucked into the edge of a tropical wilderness. There are mosquitos. They weren't what I'd call excessive but they're there. It's also adjacent to a neighborhood drive that parallels the stream behind the house. You will see and hear cars going by and hear dogs barking. Again nothing I would call excessively loud or excessively frequent but it does occasionally interrupt the serenity of the property.
Also, there are many gorgeous beaches you'll be tempted to swim in because "you're the only ones there". There's a reason why you won't see anyone swimming at that gorgeous beach - because it's too dangerous. There are select spots that are protected by reef or land and generally considered safe during certain times of the year. The property owner provides a brochure that you need to review before going to the beach. Read it. We were able to enjoy a few very safe days at the beach splashing and snorkeling with the help of the property owner (thank you Mark).
Overall, I would recommend this property to anyone, especially if they love nature.
Mahalo Mark for taking the time to review my property. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. ♥
True Hawaiian Experience
The River Estate House was perfect in every way!
Beautiful surroundings that felt untouched and part of the beautiful north shore nature
And beautiful interiors that perfectly reflect the spirit of Hawaii.
You can watch a movie with amazingly fast WiFi, sit in the hot tub on the screened lanai, enjoy local food in the spacious well appointed kitchen that is spotless.
There are two bathrooms which helps and a washer and dryer.
We literally kayaked from the river behind our house to the ocean and took an easy bike ride to tunnels beach while everyone else was having to find parking!
Would recommend to anyone and we are certain it it the most amazing home we will ever stay in!
Mahalo for reviewing your stay Taylor. I appreciate it very much. ♥
Lovely, spacious home on the North Shore
Our stay in the Riverestate was perfect. The bedrooms and common spaces were large enough for our party of 6, including 5 adults. The screened in lanai was nice for breakfast and drinks in the evening while listening to the sound of the "jungle" around. You feel secluded here, but really are very close to all the key north shore activities including Kalalau trail, tunnels beach (best snorkeling!), and cute Hanalei town. The boat tour Mark arranged was a real highlight. We also had a paddleboard for the local river, and we had a lot of fun trying it out for a few days. Overall, 5 stars!
Mahalo Nui Loa Kristin for your kind words. I'm so glad you had a great stay and I hope to see you again in the future! ♥
Our comforting and quiet accommodations are in a convenient and central North Kauai location a block up river from the beach. 2 miles west is Haena State Park, the Kalalau trail and Ke'e Beach which can be easily accessed by bicycle from the property. 2 miles East is the town of Hanalei. The surrounding area is lush and pristine with the feel of Hawaii as it was before development. There is a wide range of outdoor activities and world famous attractions in close proximity to the property that are enhanced by the exquisite landscape and the surrounding ocean. The natural beauty of North Kauai is world famous and River Estate is in the middle of it all.
