Fantastic location if you want serenity and peace for a while. Ocean is a 2 minute walk where you can sit and watch the ocean waters hitting the lava shore. At night the stars are your pleasure!
Beautiful view, very nicely decorated and comfortable. Appreciated the nice pots and pans, though cooking facilities are very limited (there is no stove or oven, there is just a 2 burner induction cook top).
Beautiful space at the edge of the lava, with the sea in the walkable distance. We stayed in both the Ocean Temple and the Bali Temple and both were wonderful. Roomy and spacious. Comfortable.
All I can say is wow! Everything we could want or need was available for us. Our host was absolutely amazing, lots of information about what we could do while there, the ocean lullaby and views were breathtaking and beautiful. Any stress I felt before I arrived melted away. I wish I could express how incredibly satisfied my stay was. Mahala!

Very cool place! We did get chased out of the back yard/beach by lose dogs that had collars and tags but no owners in sight which was a bit scary. Great place to stay and eat drive up to the volcano!

I know where the dogs live; they are harmless. I always suggest calling me if anything were to arise that needed to be addressed, so that guests are sure to enjoy a 5-star experience!
My husband and I stayed at Rachaelle's oceanfront home for 4 nights and it was lovely! It was one of the most unique locations we've ever stayed at. The view of the ocean and lava rock landscape right off the deck was so beautiful and we were able to watch the sunrise just about every morning. I read reviews about people falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean but what stuck out the most for us was the symphony of coqui frogs every night. The place itself was spacious and incredibly comfortable. We were even able to enjoy the weekly night market at the local farmers market down the street from us. One thing to note for people wanting to do activities in Hilo area, it was about a 40-45 minute drive to the downtown area. But the uniqueness of this location was definitely worth it for us!
It was the most peaceful island experience we have ever had. The place was beautiful and serene. We loved exploring the lava flows and hearing the ocean.
The Bali Temple was an absolute dream to stay in! We loved how it was so far away from the bigger cities and how quiet and relaxing it was. We walked the lava run every day to see the ocean- it is exactly as advertised! The host was lovely and responsive. The only thing I wish we’d known ahead of time is that there is no stove or oven but there is a hot plate! Prepare your meals accordingly! Otherwise it was absolutely perfect and we had the best time.
The location is amazing. Right on the lava flow. The private black sand beach is awesome, but don’t expect to go swimming there as the surf is rough smashing against rock. I would highly recommend staying here. A couple things that could be improved by the host would be to 1) get a new grill; the one there is so rusted and falling apart that it is a borderline hazard 2) replace the shower head; the one in the shower constantly falls off 3) update the description so anyone renting knows that the kitchen does not have an oven or a dishwasher.
My wife and I had a wonderful stay at this peaceful and beautiful home. We had the place to ourselves for most of the stay and enjoyed the time really getting away from it all. A little hard to find but that was part of the appeal.

I fell in love with Kalapana/Kehena 20 minutes after my arrival! I have been all over the state, and have found no other place to be so close to the ways of old Hawaiian Living… the people of this community are happy and friendly and the way of life is still relaxed and laid back. There is as much of a social life in the Lower Puna area as any big city! I fell in love with this property in ’05 and purchased it with the idea of creating a sanctuary to grow old in. Prior to my arrival, this property was a part of a Buddist’s Meditation Center and it was direct oceanfront. In the 1990 lava flow, the property was preserved as the lava swept along the shoreline, taking out the beaches and forming new ones. This newly created land now belongs to the state. There is approximately 300 ’ of lava between Bali Temple and the Pacific Ocean! I saw myself living at this property forever, so I renovated it for 2 years in the style I wished to live! Living on an active volcano on the 2nd largest mountain on the planet (next to Mauna Kea, the other volcano of Big Island) has its benefits…there is a magnetic energy here that many feel to be “Supercharged”, lending itself to the dynamic and creative spirits of our community members.
Why they chose this property
Kaimu enjoys the best weather on the island, according to most Hawaiians. More Hawaiians lived here then in any other location! Balmy nights, and 45' of rain each year, with sunshine filled days. No air conditioning or heating is needed; I fell in love with Kalapana/Kehena 20 minutes after my arrival! I have been all over the state, and have found no other place to be so close to the ways of old Hawaiian Living… the people of this community are happy and friendly and the way of life is still relaxed and laid back. What makes this property unique
A natural setting as dramatic as that which Ocean Temple enjoys is rare. The energy of the active volcano is truly invigorating. Walking along the coastal bluffs directly in front of Ocean Temple will give you the experience of what Hawaii was like long ago...uninhabited, wild, and sensual, with the 'Techni-Colors' of Hawaii's vivid deep blue ocean and skies, against the jet black lava, white puffy clouds, bright greens of the vegetation, and the sound of the crashing waves you hear all day and all night. At night, you will be in awe at the number and brightness of the star-lite skies!
