I was born and raised in California and moved here 25 years ago. My wife's family is from this area so naturally, we would come here to vacation with our own family. When it came time to retire, we built this house and moved to the beautiful Big Island of Hawaii. We've been on vacation ever since!
Richard Marston purchased this house in 1989
This house is located directly across the street from the ocean which protects it from some of the strong waves and spray that frequent the area. On days that have tropical showers, we have a covered lanai and cabana with BBQ, perfect to enjoy the outdoors in comfort.
You can sit on the front lanai with your cup of Kona coffee and watch the sunrise. On our nice pleasant Hawaiian nights you can sit and watch the silvery Moon come up over the ocean and if you're lucky, you'll be here during whale season, when you can hear the humpback whales bellow and play right in front of your very own home away from home!

Beautiful house and view. The owner Richard is very helpful and easy to get in touch with.
The only negative would be that the mattress in the first bedroom is very hard and the bikes in the garage need a little work.
Thanks for everything Richard.

We spent three months at this place so we know it better than anyone. We enjoyed every minute of our stay. The pictures are a very accurate description of how the house looks. The only exception is the ocean view from the front deck is better than advertised. The house is situated on a very quiet street. You'll see more people walking by than driving cars. One end of the four block street is a dead end and the other leads right to the park. Perfect place to walk in the morning to see the sun rise and watch the waves crash against the rocky shoreline.
In three months I don't think I saw one mosquito. In fact the patio door doesn't even have a screen door just a screen hanging. The only thing that finds its way in the house are the geikos. They are harmless but my wife didn't like them so I would grab them and throw them outside.
The neighborhood is very safe so you won't feel threatened even when walking at night. Pahoa, the nearest town is like living in the sixties but the hippies are harmless. The homes on the ocean side of the street are half rentals the rest of the homes are are locals who wave every time they walk by.
Because we spent the winter there we covered the island from end to end. The house is centrally located to see everything. Our favorite spot the hot pond is a half hour drive along a tree lined back road. The volcano and lava flowing into the ocean along with the majestic water falls are all within an hours drive. An hour and a half drive to the south gets you to the black and green sand beaches and north to the deep valleys.
The east side of the island where the house is situated is full of lush greenery and a rugged rocky shoreline. The temperatures are always the same low in the sixties and high in the seventies. None of the houses have heat or air and it can get a little humid so you're going to want the ceiling fans on all the time.
The house is as nice as any rental in the area. If we came back we would return to this house. Nothing is perfect so so don't expect the furniture to be as comfortable as your own house. But all in all Richards place is worth staying at if you want your vacation house to have a great ocean view in a nice quiet neighborhood.
The house is older but comfortable. The neighborhood is nice, with friendly neighbors, and the view of the ocean across the street is a treat. No air conditioning but breezes kept it fairly comfy. More dishes to cook with and condiments in the fridge would have been nice. Really appreciated the snorkeling gear, cooler and beach chairs. Location was a bit further off the beaten path than we might have liked but it was a nice get-away.
We stayed from Dec 23-30, 2016 with 5 adults. We were all very comfortable. Beds were comfortable.
The water view from the house, the sound of the ocean, the walking distance park from the house, the constellation at night -- priceless. I still can't get ove all the nice, relaxing and fun nights we had in the balcony.
On a clear night turn off all the lights in the house to see the amazing constellation view....amazing!!!!!
We were able to utilize kitchen equipments for dining in or take out.
The owner Mr. Richard was very nice. He made sure we have enough comforters or cover sheets to keep us warm. It was cold nights for him but was very comfortable nights for us (Connecticut, NY and LA crowd).
We all didn't want to leave!!!!!!!!
For future renters please respect and take care of the house as we plan to come back again!
We just got back from the Big Island and had rented this house. It was perfect.....there was four of us, and I felt like it was my own. Beautifully decorated inside and out, it was most definitely the "Hawaiin' feel". It was perfectly located for the the excursions we did. We didn't get the chance to ride the bikes, but we did however get to go to the tide pools, which was a great place to snorkel. We also took the Lava Ocean tour which was located about 20 miles or less away. The volcano was just a short ways away as well. We spent most of the time on the front lanai listening to the waves crashing just across the street. Nice quiet neighborhood. The little town of Pahoa was just up our alley, we did eat a few meals there. The owner called us about an hour after our arrival to make sure we got in and settled. If I was to come back I would definitely come back to this house.
This wonderfully cared for, comfortable home was exactly what we needed as we brought our friends for their first visit to the Big Island of Hawaii. It is in a very quiet and comfortable neighborhood, with the sound of the ocean nearby. Everything in the home was well-supplied, the beds were quite comfortable, and the sound of the ocean was always in the distance.
The location was also very good for several things to do, and was the perfect launching point for us. The entrance to Volcanoes National Park was not far; the snorkeling and the lava boat launch near Isaac Hale Park were 20 minutes away. Downtown Pahoa and Hilo, both nearby, have some of the best restaurants on the island.
We will think about our time here for a long, long time. It was a very homey and sweet place.
House is located on an island with high tropical rain fall which makes it ideal for botanical gardens. House is located near cliffs with deep ocean water which makes it ideal for whale watching.
