If you're planning a vacation to East Hawaii, I'd like to welcome you to stay at the Koloha Hale "Whale House". This newly renovated, two bedroom, two full bath vacation home offers a South East Asian decor with furnishings sure to please.

Located on a street that fronts the ocean, this property features a large lanai with excellent ocean views. Listen to the waves break on the shoreline and watch green sea turtles playing in the surf. During the winter months, October thru March, it's an excellent location to whale watch! With your morning cup of Kona coffee, enjoy a beautiful sunrise on the front lanai. A private lanai off the master bedroom looks over a beautifully landscaped tropical garden that's home to a variety orchids, palms and plumeria trees. The space includes a large cabana and charcoal barbecue. Great for relaxing with family and friends!

Offering internet access and satellite TV, you'll feel right at home. The kitchen is fully equipped for all your culinary and entertaining needs. A large granite counter provides extra space for entertaining and seating. A beautiful mango wood dining room table seats eight. French doors open onto the large, ocean facing lanai.

The master bedroom includes a king size bed, large closet, and nicely appointed private bath and vanity. The second bedroom hosts a queen size bed and closet. Located in the semi-private den is a full size futon and built-in desk. This den can be used as a third bedroom. With a second full size futon in the living room, this house can sleep up to eight comfortably!

With a short drive to the quaint old village of Pahoa, you'll find a local supermarket, gas stations, bookstore, cafe, drugstores, gift shops, surf shop, Post Office and a handful of excellent restaurants; Mexican, Thai, Italian and local fare.

Conveniently located, many sights can be found within a hour's drive. At Volcano National Park you'll be able to see the volcano put on a show for you. At Kaimu Beach, sink your feet into one of Hawaii's newest black sand beaches. Explore Kapoho Fish Ponds where you can snorkel with tropical fish. Be adventurous at Alahanui Park and take a dip in the calm, healing waters of a natural geothermal pond or visit one of our many botanical gardens in this area. See why this island is nicknamed the "Orchid Island"!

Come stay at the "Koloha Hale"!

About Richard Marston

I was born and raised in California and moved here 25 years ago. My wife's family is from this area so naturally, we would come here to vacation with our own family. When it came time to retire, we built this house and moved to the beautiful Big Island of Hawaii. We've been on vacation ever since!

Richard Marston purchased this house in 1989

Why Richard Marston chose Puna District

This house is located directly across the street from the ocean which protects it from some of the strong waves and spray that frequent the area. On days that have tropical showers, we have a covered lanai and cabana with BBQ, perfect to enjoy the outdoors in comfort.

What makes this house unique

You can sit on the front lanai with your cup of Kona coffee and watch the sunrise. On our nice pleasant Hawaiian nights you can sit and watch the silvery Moon come up over the ocean and if you're lucky, you'll be here during whale season, when you can hear the humpback whales bellow and play right in front of your very own home away from home!

Awesome little paradise

  • 5 of 5

Highly recommended. Away from busy roads of Hilo.Great location right across the ocean. Very serene and relaxing, whether you want to sit with a cup of coffee or wine :) Close to all the attractions. A perfect blend like Kona Coffee!!

Richard is very helpful and responds quickly. Will definitely go back.

Our trip to the Big Island was amazing and the place we stayed helped make it amazing! Each morning I sat on the front lani in a swing while drinking my coffee and listened to the waves break while the sun came up. We also enjoyed the geckos that were abundant out front and in the back yard. The home was roomy, comfortable and Richard made sure everything was perfect. I managed to blow a circuit with my blow dryer but Richard had someone there ASAP to fix it (as the breaker box was in the locked garage). When we go back to the Big Island this is where we plan to stay, again. Thank you Richard!

Wonderful place to stay and listen to the sounds of nature. Quiet, spacious. Especially liked sitting in the swing/hammock while watching the sun rise over the water. Kitchen had everything we needed. We appreciated the owner calling the next day to make sure everything was OK.

We stayed there for 5 nights with our two little ones. This is a huge house with all necessary things to feel at home. The location is perfect to go to National Park, lava tours and waterfalls. It is so quiet at night that you can feel the waves of the ocean. The owner is accessible and friendly. We highly recommand this property. Mahalo Richard!

Beautiful house and view

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful house and view. The owner Richard is very helpful and easy to get in touch with.

The only negative would be that the mattress in the first bedroom is very hard and the bikes in the garage need a little work.

Thanks for everything Richard.

Owner's Response: Sorry about the hard mattress on the futon, I should have told you we have a memory foam for that futon in the closet. I will instruct the cleaning crew to use the memory foam whenever they make up the futon. Thank you for the response, this helps us serve our clients in the future. Mahalo Rich

Spent the winter here

  • 5 of 5

We spent three months at this place so we know it better than anyone. We enjoyed every minute of our stay. The pictures are a very accurate description of how the house looks. The only exception is the ocean view from the front deck is better than advertised. The house is situated on a very quiet street. You'll see more people walking by than driving cars. One end of the four block street is a dead end and the other leads right to the park. Perfect place to walk in the morning to see the sun rise and watch the waves crash against the rocky shoreline.

In three months I don't think I saw one mosquito. In fact the patio door doesn't even have a screen door just a screen hanging. The only thing that finds its way in the house are the geikos. They are harmless but my wife didn't like them so I would grab them and throw them outside.

The neighborhood is very safe so you won't feel threatened even when walking at night. Pahoa, the nearest town is like living in the sixties but the hippies are harmless. The homes on the ocean side of the street are half rentals the rest of the homes are are locals who wave every time they walk by.

Because we spent the winter there we covered the island from end to end. The house is centrally located to see everything. Our favorite spot the hot pond is a half hour drive along a tree lined back road. The volcano and lava flowing into the ocean along with the majestic water falls are all within an hours drive. An hour and a half drive to the south gets you to the black and green sand beaches and north to the deep valleys.

The east side of the island where the house is situated is full of lush greenery and a rugged rocky shoreline. The temperatures are always the same low in the sixties and high in the seventies. None of the houses have heat or air and it can get a little humid so you're going to want the ceiling fans on all the time.

The house is as nice as any rental in the area. If we came back we would return to this house. Nothing is perfect so so don't expect the furniture to be as comfortable as your own house. But all in all Richards place is worth staying at if you want your vacation house to have a great ocean view in a nice quiet neighborhood.

Owner's Response: Thank you Dennis for the nice review. Also thank your lovely wife for rearranging my furniture, house looks beautiful. I wish you folks live on the big Island, I would hire her to manage and maintain my house. We can't compete against the big hotels for their quality of rooms but we can give you personal service and make sure that your stay on the big Island is memorable. Mahalo again Dennis and my door will always be open to you and your lovely wife. Much ahloa Rich
