Gorgeous and Well-Appointed Bali Temple offers 160 degree Ocean Views and a wonderfully relaxing and peaceful Hawaii experience that will leave you fully rejuvenated.
Bali Temple is truly a unique and special place to land in Hawaii, and is known for its dramatic setting, beautiful architecture and luxuriously well-appointed amenities.
Bali Temple is located right on the 1993 lava flow which has created 160 degree expansive Pacific Ocean whitewater views for your enjoyment. There is a private black sand beach a few hundred yards away to enjoy year round sunrises and sunsets and watch the humpback whales breaching during the winter months.
Bali Temple was completely remodeled in 2007 and enjoys a fully equipped modern kitchen, double vanity sinks, 6’ spa bathtub, granite, gorgeous Mahogany wood trim accents, expansive picture windows looking out to the ocean, large mirrors, a covered lanai, Tempur-Pedic mattresses, 100% cotton bedding, and thick bath towels.
There are many spectacular sites to visit during your stay: visit Kehena Beach, a gorgeous black sand beach where you may be lucky to swim and snorkel with wild spinner dolphins, and your (non) clothing is optional. Snorkel in the tide pools of Kapoho. Check out the numerous Volcano Touring activities such as: Volcano National Park, Lava Tree State Park, Lava Boat Tours, Lava Hikes, and the Geothermal Heated Hot Ponds. Experience an abundance of shopping for the true tastes of Hawaii with its abundant selections of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, flowers, and unique gift items at either Maku'u Market in Pahoa (Saturday), the Kaimu Market (Wednesday night, and ½ mile away from Bali Temple!) complete with Hawaiian music, and the Hilo Farmer's Market (Wednesday and Saturday). Acquaint yourself with the Island flora with a tour at the Botanical Gardens, sightsee and explore numerous waterfalls, Whale Watch from the lanai, indulge yourself with fine Dining, and dance it all off at Ecstatic Dance on Sundays at Kalani, and then the Drum Circle on Sunday afternoon at Kehena Beach. There are numerous Yoga Classes, Pilates Classes, and massage therapists ready to treat you!
Dining options from Bali Temple are numerous: Right in the neighborhood is an authentic Ava Bar, serving up the local and relaxing Kava beverage, with the Kalapana Village Café is right next door, open til 9pm. Kalani Honua is 4 miles down the Red Road for delicious meals too. 8 miles up the road is Pahoa Town, with numerous options in Italian, Thai, Sushi, Mexican, Kaleo’s Bar and Grill, coffee shops, etc. Hilo is 30 miles for many more choices.
When my visitors depart Bali Temple, they feel refreshed, invigorated, and much more vibrant then when they arrived. The air along our coastline has been measured to be the cleanest in the United States! The lush greenery and scenic coastline areas are inspiring.
I look forward to your visit at Bali Temple…see you soon!

I fell in love with Kalapana/Kehena 20 minutes after my arrival! I have been all over the state, and have found no other place to be so close to the ways of old Hawaiian Living… the people of this community are happy and friendly and the way of life is still relaxed and laid back. There is as much of a social life in the Lower Puna area as any big city! I fell in love with this property in ’06 and purchased it with the idea of creating a sanctuary to grow old in. Prior to my ownership, this property was a part of a Buddist’s Meditation Center and it was direct oceanfront. In the 1990 lava flow, the property was preserved as the lava swept along the shoreline, taking out the beaches and forming new ones. This newly created land now belongs to the state. There is approximately 200’ of lava between Bali Temple and the Pacific Ocean! I saw myself living at this property forever, so I renovated it for 2 years in the style I wished to live, and it shows! Living on an active volcano on the 2nd largest mountain on the planet (next to Mauna Kea, the other volcano of Big Island) has its benefits…there is a magnetic energy here that many feel to be “Supercharged”, lending itself to the dynamic and creative spirits of our community members.
Rachaelle purchased this House in 2006
Why Rachaelle chose Kaimu
Kaimu enjoys the best weather on the island, according to most Hawaiians. More Hawaiians lived here then in any other location! Balmy nights, and 45' of rain each year, with sunshine filled days. No air conditioning or heating is needed; I fell in love with Kalapana/Kehena 20 minutes after my arrival! What makes this House unique
A natural setting as dramatic as that which Bali Temple enjoys is rare. The energy of the active volcano, whose lava flows just 10 or so miles away, is truly invigorating. Walks along the coastal bluffs directly in front of Bali Temple give you the experience of what Hawaii was like long ago...unihabited, wild, and sensual, with the 'Techni-Colors' of Hawaii's vivid ocean and sky blues, white puffy clouds, bright greens of the vegetation, and the sound of the crashing waves you hear all day and all night. At night, you will be in awe at the number and brightness of the star-lite skies!

So much more than we anticipated!
Every now and then, we stay at a place where the first words as we enter are ones of awe. Every room in Bali Temple is beautifully decorated in peaceful tones, eclectic art work, and clean, open spaces. I could have spent days just wandering the lava flow between the house and ocean, taking photos and enjoying the various forms of lava.
I hadn't realized from the description that we were upstairs and there was another rental below, but that was okay. Everyone was quiet and respectful. Rachaelle was very helpful, even helping me find an acupuncturist for my back.
It's a short drive to Pahoa where there's a market, a natural food store and a few good restaurants. Kilauea Crater/Volcano National Park is less than an hour away. Be sure and stay for the nighttime viewing as the crater lights up red (bring a warm jacket!). I'd definitely return.
Nice place, incredible view
We stayed at Bali Temple for the second half of our honeymoon on the big island. We met Rachaelle once, she was friendly. She doesn't live downstairs anymore and was renting the space to a nice couple that was staying for about 2 weeks. There was another rental property on the fairly small Bali temple lot and it was occupied by 2 different tenets over the course of our stay, a couple and a young family of 3. There was construction going on next door but this was fine by us and didn't interfere in our vacation in the slightest. Everyone was kind and friendly....
I'll start with the things that could be improved:
- My biggest disappointment was the jetted tub, not only did the jets not work the drain plug was not tight so it took forever to fill with water and once it did you could hear the water escaping from the tub during my bath. I love a good bath and was less than impressed.
- We accidentally used the neighbors fire pit to grill which was embarrassing and should be marked better , we followed the trail from the back yard as described and were very embarrassed when the neighbors said that it was not ours to use. luckily we were using our own charcoal.
-The kitchen was lacking things like extra trash bags, baking sheets, & aluminum foil. There were sharp knives (though half of them were hidden in a drawer for the first half of our stay), pot holders, plenty of dishes, a full size dish washer, a coffee maker that could be set on a timer and a corkscrew.
- Some tourists in the area expressed some concern over the 'locals'. In the Kalapana/Pahoa area there is a very hippie vibe and a lot of hitch hikers which we were fine with but seemed to make some people staying in the area uncomfortable.
- the strange guy who wandered through the property said he knows the owner. He was not friendly and seemed mentally unstable. We would see him lurking and those were the only times I felt uncomfortable during our stay.
- p.s. for other shorties out there look in the closet for the step stool because the bed is nearly as tall as I am 5'.
- double sink / vanity
- laundry room (needed softener)
- the view from the porch when it was not raining
- the lava 'park' area near the shoreline that is walking distance out the back door.
- walking out onto the lava field at night and looking at the lava running down kilauea
- uncle roberts wednesday night market (and saturday morning - it is much smaller but very fun for breakfast)
- the geckos
Amazing Place - Check the weather
It is hard to review this place because the weather was so bad while we were there. Thank God the place is so beautiful and comfortable because we were in rain for 3 straight days. We love the town of Pahoa and the area is beautiful. Not too many beaches around so you probably aren't getting in the water too much...this may just be because of the storm we dealt with. Rachaelle is great to deal with. My only advise is make sure you check the weather. It is the rainy side of the island.
There are many wonderful outdoor activities to enjoy during your holiday!
This was by far the worst weather that we have had in Lower Puna, and all of Hawaii in general. We do get storms, which can cause a 3-day storm, but that is rare. Generally, we have rainfall in early morning and night time, and sunshine filled days.
So much more.....
Rachaelle's Bali Temple is certainly a cut above! Sitting at the very edge of creation in a sense (since this particular land only formed in the 90s as I understand it) offers the possibility to dive deeply into the warm embrace of Mama Earth and the activation of Pele - while residing in paradise. Such a lovely, open, well-appointed, high quality and resonant space. Wonderful art too. So thanks, Rachaelle, for the experience!
If I was to add anything to this remarkable offering, it would be a good reading light in 2 places. One on or by the desk and one between the kick-back chairs (which you suggested I put there and did - it worked perfectly by the way). Also a small note on the window that can leash a rain storm of discoloration on the desk if left open. The white magically disappeared when dry though, thank God, but can cause temporary heart palpitations in the mean time! And for music lovers, the CD eject button is on the right side - follow the silver line around the corner! :) Cheers! Challamar
Thank you for your review, Challamar!
It was delightful to host you and I will always look forward to your return to Bali Temple!
On the Edge of Paradise
This home is absolutely beautiful and a wonderful way to experience a remote part of the island. You can walk out on the lava fields to a breathtaking coastline, or you can simply enjoy listening to the waves crash from the balcony (or inside with the windows open!). We loved how close it was to the little villages of Kalapana and Pahoa, and the lava viewing area. We were blessed with getting to see the annual holiday parade in Pahoa and were welcomed with open arms by the amazing locals there. On our second day here we rented electric bicycles to the lava viewing area to get up close and personal with flowing lava and steam vents -- a once in a lifetime thrill that you cannot miss! Unfortunately, on the way back in the dark and mist one of us slipped on the lava and ended up bleeding profusely from both hands and knees. So, if you go, BE CAREFUL! But go! Uncles in the little village at the end of the road has great food and a great little bar. There is also an amazing drive along the coast that is not to be missed. You will feel like you are driving through the Hawaii of yesterday. Another absolute must do!
The only hiccups we ran into had to do with the locks being changed out to a code lock instead of a key right before we arrived. We were unable to access the unit right away, and because of not receiving a key we were not able to access the laundry room. If it hadn't been the very beginning of our trip this would have been a bigger issue, but as it was we just waited until our next place to do laundry.
We spent a few days of our honeymoon here, and it was a really relaxing/quiet area. You could walk right onto a field from a previous lava flow with some really neat textures, and the view of the ocean is great. There isn't A/C, but there are fans and all the windows have screens when you open them, so we were comfortable.
Numerous Volcano Touring activities available at Volcano National Park, Lava Tree State Park, Lava Boat Tours, Lava Hikes, Geothermally Heated Hot Ponds, abundant shopping for Hawaii's fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, flowers, and unique gift items at either Maku'u Market in Pahoa, Uncle Robert's Wednesday night and Saturday morning Farmer's is located .75 mile away, and the Hilo Farmer's Markets throughout the week, Botanical Gardens Tours, Waterfalls exploration, Whale Watching from the lanai, Fine Dining, Ecstatic Dance on Sundays at Kalani, Drum Circle on Sundays at Kehena Beach, Swim with Wild Spinner dolphins at Kehena Beach, Yoga Classes, Pilates Classes, receive a massage.
