Stretch your travel budget by preparing some of your meals in the cheerful kitchen or walk to one of the fine local restaurants. The fenced garden creates a peaceful environment and accommodates bikes, kayaks, supervised pets and children. Smoke-Free environment. Check our website (below) for additional photos.

At this writing, the nearby Botanical garden is alive with birds and pollinators. Book now for a fall getaway, Festival of Lights starting Thanksgiving weekend, and for whale watching later in the winter.

About Wendy and Don Roberts

Innkeepers Don and Wendy Roberts purchased the historic Bever House in 1989 and re-built the adjacent water tower two years later as a unique guest house in the heart of Mendocino's National Historic District. Recently retired from Stanford University's Communiction Department, Don continues his writing and consults on children's television program. Wendy applies her non-profit management skills to various local endeavors, coordinates the County's Master Gardener Program and serves on the Advisory Board for County tourism promotion.

Why Wendy and Don Roberts chose Mendocino

Living near the ocean has always been a priority for us and the Village of Mendocino won our hearts because of the spectacular bluff top setting and the rural community with its strong focus on the arts and on preservation of the town and its natural environment. It's a privilege to live here and welcome others to this very special place.

What makes this cottage unique

Staying in the heart of Mendocino Village allows our guests to enjoy its scenic beauty and share the slower pace and peaceful spirit of our rural community. Comfortable shoes are welcome wherever one goes...from one of the excellent restaurants, to a whale watching cruise, a hike up Big River, a Music Festival concert, Film Festival screening, Writer's Conference seminar...or just prop them up on our tree stump 'footrest' and lounge on the Tower porch with a good book.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We've stayed in dozens of places in Mendocino in the past 30 years, but the tower has been one of our faves.

Beauty, Peace, and Tranquility

  • 5 of 5

The Tower is magical! We spent two nights in this mystical water tower overlooking the beautiful Pacific. We loved strolling through town, visiting the shopkeepers, learning about the history of Mendocino from a knowledgeable, charismatic woman at the Artists Co-Op, enjoying fabulous food and drinks at Patterson’s Pub and The Mendocino Hotel, and walking along the amazingly beautiful coastline of the Mendocino Headlands. We were not want for beauty and entertainment. Our accommodations at the Tower were perfect, comfortable, and couldn’t have been better. I spent hours alone in the upstairs room, reading, resting, and rejuvenating – the perfect place to spend my birthday. Thank you, Wendy, we will return.

A Special Place

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in the Water Tower! The Water Tower is great for two people (we were two people - and it was great!) - the first floor is a comfortable space with living area, kitchen and bathroom on that floor. There is also a nice porch that faces out onto the garden area (which must be super beautiful in the summer, it is lovingly tended). The second floor is a light, airy, pretty bedroom with comfortable bed and nice linens. From there is a ladder-like set of stairs to the top room - super cute and cosy with single bed with very comfy mattress. But wait - there's more: a door leads outside to stairs that go to the tower's widow's walk - a rooftop with a view. A perfect perch for surveying the land and ocean with a glass of wine.

Kitchen was as equipped as we needed, The Tower was cozy and comfortable and well located in the Village. Lovely walks right out to the headlands from the cottage. We hope to return again this year. Thanks so much to our hosts for sharing their special accommodations with us.

Beautiful, quiet, serene property

  • 4 of 5

Great location. The tower is really cool and has a total of 3 small floors. I loved that. It's great for children and pets. My son loved climbing all the stairs and ladders. I took off a star because I did not feel very welcomed. I would decrease the signs all around of what NOT to do. The property owner also wasn't the warmest when I arrived or when I called her when the power went out. The place was immaculate when I arrived, so I know they put a lot of effort into it. I would still stay there again and recommend people go.

Owner's Response: We appreciate the positive reviews, especially regarding the immaculate condition which can be a challenge given our commitment to including children and pets. We had several pleasant exchanges with these guests, though I apologize if I sounded frustrated when awakened at 5:30 in the morning after a PG&E transformer blew during the night. Happily, I was able to report that the power was restored by 9:00 a.m.

We had to cut our visit short as my husband had trouble getting to the bathroom downstairs.

Cozy Tower Cottage

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this cute cozy cottage, great location, walking distance to everything. The yard/garden is lovely, we loved the lemon tree too! Great deck for relaxing outside. The view from the top of the tower is stunning! The house is very clean and spacious. We cooked, it would've been great if there were a few more staples on hand like olive oil, and coffee (there was a little coffee in the fridge) maybe milk/cream, salt (couldn't find) etc. We would recommend this place, it is a little pricey, especially with all the added VRBO fees. Thanks for letting us and our dogs stay at your lovely place!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your thoughtful review. We're glad you enjoyed the Tower and had a pleasant stay. Our housekeeper especially appreciates feedback that her careful cleaning is appreciated. We do supply our guests with coffee and tea, sugar, salt and such but avoid perishables that can become stale or contaminated. Fortunately, there is an excellent market at the end of the street where fresh meat and produce and lots of luscious deli items are readily available. It's one of the most historic businesses in town and also one of the most up to date for quality and service.
