Overview

About the property

Cabin, Studio, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2) NEW! Sleep 2 more. Queen Bed in Outbuilding.

Tara is a cozy, romantic and elegant cabin located in the Sierra Foothills at about 1800 feet elevation. It is 650 square feet of charm nestled into a pristine private sanctuary of 30 acres of pines, cedars, madrones, and oaks. Situated above Rock Creek, there are private swimming holes, waterfalls, and large granite flat rocks for sunbathing. This is a “too good to be true” place to get away from it all. You can hear the birds singing and water tumbling in the creek. A cathedral of trees caresses you as you sink into the solitude.

The Foothills are showing signs of Fall. Trees are beginning to turn. It's just beautiful now. Daytime temps can range from 60's to 70's to low 80's, with cooler nights .These are perfect days for exploring the town, hiking or walking around our beautiful area, and returning to cozy cabin comfort. Or just enjoy a slow and peaceful day at the cabin, lying in the sun all year round, sitting near and floating in the creek, (the water is perfection!) reading or napping. Evenings are sweet in the fading light of the day, perhaps enjoying a glass of wine on the deck or just being toasty next to the woodstove, followed by a soak in the hot tub overlooking the creek.

The cabin is one room with wooden beam ceilings and wooden floors, surrounded by windows with green tree-filled views and creek frontage. We have unsurpassed beauty in all directions from windows and decks. The cabin has french doors that open onto multi-leveled decks in back overlooking the creek. There is a small camp at Lover's Pool in Summer, with chairs, floats, chaise lounges, and an umbrella. Bring your food, a towel, your reading material, and stay for hours in heaven.

Our outbuilding called the Buddha Hut now sleeps 1 or 2 more in Queen Bed. Located across the parking area, and just opposite the cabin, it is light and airy, a perfect, sweet spot for extra friends. On the deck in warmer months are chairs, a chaise lounge, and a sail for shade. Guests can use the Compost Toilet and sink located in Buddha Hut overnight, but use the cabin bathroom for showering. BH can be rented in conjunction with the cabin, but not rented separately to another party at the same time.

Whether you choose to relax on the deck, cozy up to the woodstove on crisp evenings, dip in the swimming holes, sunbathe on the warm rocks in warmer months, or venture out to explore the historic sites of the Gold Rush towns of Nevada City and Grass Valley, you will be enthralled by the relaxed pace and ambience of the area. Nearby, you can visit the old gold mines at Empire Mine State Park, or at Malakoff Diggins. Or visit the South Yuba River State Park at Bridgeport and see the covered bridge, scenic river overlooks, enjoy hiking trails, and incredible swimming holes, some with beaches. There is swimming, boating, canoeing and kayaking at nearby Scott's Flat Lake as well. There is also South Yuba River access at Purdon Crossing and Edward's Crossing near the cabin.

A great base for snow exploration, Tara is 1/2hr. from free snowshoeing and crosscountry skiing up Hwy. 20. It is 45minutes - 1 hour from downhill skiing and other snow fun at Sugar Bowl, Donner Ski Ranch, Boreal, and Royal Gorge. 4wheel drive is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED when coming to Tara in Winter months. Although the cabin is usually below snow level, when it's storming, or snow or ice is present, it's best to be safe and prepared. Part of the road to Tara is gravel/dirt, and there is a paved, steep, final descent to the cabin. Paved area can get icy, as temps dip. Sand, ice melt, snow shovel on hand.

Nevada City, a 12-15 minute drive away, has great shopping, and a variety of excellent eateries, from upscale fare to informal dining. The town also features live theater and music, bookstores, outdoor cafes and art galleries. It is well worth a visit to take a walking tour of this historic and charming Gold Rush town, have a bite to eat, and perhaps have a wine tasting at our many local winery shops.

Grass Valley, like Nevada City, has many buildings dating back 100+ years, and is just a 18-20 minute drive from Tara. There are charming antique shops, restaurants, wine shops, the old Holbrooke Hotel, a movie theatre and two Cornish Pastie establishments, serving the favorite of gold miners long ago. The Center for the Arts is located on Main St., presenting wonderful live theatre and multi-cultural music events with top musicians.

Blissful sanctuary

  • 4 of 5

This was our 2nd time staying at Tara. We came here to celebrate our 16 year wedding anniversary and it was just as peaceful and beautiful as I remembered from the first time we came here 3 years ago. I think staying here any time of year would be magical. This truly feels like a sanctuary, a place you come, to leave the crazy world behind and get away from it all. Even though your not far from town, it’s the kind of place you really don’t want to leave once you get here. We stayed 2 nights and went to a local concert the first night but had a hard time leaving to go to that! All that being said, the one drawback to our visit this time happened after we checked in, when we were asked if we would be willing to leave for part of the day so a realtor could show the property. Our compensation would be a free lunch. To me, this felt totally unacceptable and invasive. If I would have known before I booked our stay that the place is for sale and realtors may want to show it during our visit, I would have stayed somewhere else. This place is expensive and don’t get me wrong, it’s worth it but I can’t imagine anything less relaxing than having to leave your peaceful vacation so a pushy realtor can come through your space that you’ve paid a lot of money for. And I’m sorry, a free lunch doesn’t cut it people! I was honestly shocked that the owner would be ok with asking this of a paying guest. I understand they are trying to sell the property but not telling your guest ahead of time that realtors may want to show it during your stay, feels out of integrity. In the future, I would hope guests would be notified ahead of time that a realtors may come through and if the guest is ok with that, offer them a discounted rate if they agree to it. Fortunately, we were given the option to say no & the property manger is wonderful to work with. She was very understanding & accommodating & rescheduled the realtor to come after we left. All that aside, the place is heavenly, the river is exquisite and the cabin is awesome down to every last thought out detail. I love the peace and quiet here and I hope whoever is lucky to buy this gem keeps it just as it is because it’s perfect!

Owner's Response: We regret that this request occurred during your stay, and are sorry you were subjected to this imposition. We took your words to heart, and the cabin will no longer be shown while guests are in residence. Your kind words regarding the beauty and peacefulness of the cabin and property are spot on. It is a "Blissful Sanctuary". "Perfect!" We hope the cabin will remain a vacation rental for a long time to come.

I bought 3 lottery tickets...

  • 5 of 5

... In hopes of being able to buy this property. This is one of the cases where the pictures could never do it justice because the cottage and land is Magickal and there is no way to capture it. I have literally never stayed in a more beautiful place before. And not just that, but the cottage is immaculately built with the best kitchen of a vrbo place as well- they definitely thought of everything. So excited to come back for another retreat!!!

perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

Tara was the perfect spot to relax and unwind for a few days. The cabin would have perfect by itself- but the private creek was the cherry on top! We used the floats to relax and catch up on our reading. The swimming hole was the perfect spot for that. The cabin had all of the comforts of home. Usually a rental will have most things you need but it always seems as though it's the owners 'seconds' if you know what I mean.. Not Tara. We were very impressed with the little details, like the large selection of organic teas, stainless steel cookware, and glass coffee press and coffee. We took groceries and stayed at the cabin the entire time. Linda was also soo helpful with everything. Her directions and instructions were clear. She even recommended several places in town to eat (we weren't familiar with the area at all).

After our stay we were asked by a family member if we'd stay here again, to which I responded "I won't stay anywhere else!" We look forward to making this place a tradition.

Amazing Beyond Imagining

  • 5 of 5

This vacation rental is everything the reviewers and house description stated it was and MORE!! It was like arriving at a little fairy land home. Spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated, amazing views and water landscapes, private swimming holes, little day camp set up with chairs and floats......and everything you need to make your stay comfortable. We never got back in the car and were so sad to leave!!! The property manager is amazingly helpful and bends over backwards to make sure that you are comfortable and personalizes your visit with notes, emails and texts. My husbands favorite beverage was waiting for him chilled in the fridge!!! We left another rental to come to Tara and were very disappointed that we hadn't spent less time there and more time at Tara. The other rental was more costly and had as good of reviews as Tara, but once we entered Tara there was NO comparison!!! We wanted to go home, do our business and turn around and go back! We HIGHLY recommend to everyone!!!

romance at it's finest

  • 5 of 5

I just surprised my husband with a weekend stay and once again the home and area were beyond perfect! We picked up groceries and never left the cabin once we got there. We ate every meal outside in the natural beauty and silence. I can never get enough of this place and we will continue to come and stay when we can.

Owner's Response: Tina just asked me to add more to her review. "No place can compare...we rent quite often and this is the only place we return to." Thanks, Tina. Nice addition.
