Tara is a cozy, romantic and elegant cabin located in the Sierra Foothills at about 1800 feet elevation. It is 650 square feet of charm nestled into a pristine private sanctuary of 30 acres of pines, cedars, madrones, and oaks. Situated above Rock Creek, there are private swimming holes, waterfalls, and large granite flat rocks for sunbathing. This is a “too good to be true” place to get away from it all. You can hear the birds singing and water tumbling in the creek. A cathedral of trees caresses you as you sink into the solitude.
We are deep in Winter now. Lots of rain, with some sun in between. Day temps range in 40's and 50's, and nights can be frosty. These are still perfect days for exploring the town, hiking or walking around our beautiful area, and returning to cozy cabin comfort. Or just enjoy a slow and peaceful day at the cabin, lying in the sun all year round, sitting near and floating in the creek, (the water is perfection!) reading or napping. Evenings are sweet in the fading light of the day, perhaps enjoying a glass of wine on the deck or just being toasty next to the woodstove, followed by a soak in the hot tub overlooking the creek.
The cabin is one room with wooden beam ceilings and wooden floors, surrounded by windows with green tree-filled views and creek frontage. We have unsurpassed beauty in all directions from windows and decks. The cabin has french doors that open onto multi-leveled decks in back overlooking the creek. There is a small camp at Lover's Pool in Summer, with chairs, floats, chaise lounges, and an umbrella. Bring your food, a towel, your reading material, and stay for hours in heaven.
Our outbuilding called the Buddha Hut now sleeps 1 or 2 more in Queen Bed. Located across the parking area, and just opposite the cabin, it is light and airy, a perfect, sweet spot for extra friends. On the deck in warmer months are chairs, a chaise lounge, and a sail for shade. Guests can use the Compost Toilet and sink located in Buddha Hut overnight, but use the cabin bathroom for showering.
Whether you choose to relax on the deck, cozy up to the woodstove on crisp evenings, dip in the swimming holes, sunbathe on the warm rocks in warmer months, or venture out to explore the historic sites of the Gold Rush towns of Nevada City and Grass Valley, you will be enthralled by the relaxed pace and ambience of the area. Nearby, you can visit the old gold mines at Empire Mine State Park, or at Malakoff Diggins. Or visit the South Yuba River State Park at Bridgeport and see the covered bridge, scenic river overlooks, enjoy hiking trails, and incredible swimming holes, some with beaches. There is swimming, boating, canoeing and kayaking at nearby Scott's Flat Lake as well. There is also South Yuba River access at Purdon Crossing and Edward's Crossing near the cabin.
A great base for snow exploration, Tara is 1/2hr. from free snowshoeing and crosscountry skiing up Hwy. 20. It is 45minutes - 1 hour from downhill skiing and other snow fun at Sugar Bowl, Donner Ski Ranch, Boreal, and Royal Gorge. 4wheel drive is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED when coming to Tara in Winter months. Although the cabin is usually below snow level, when it's storming, or snow or ice is present, it's best to be safe and prepared. Part of the road to Tara is gravel/dirt, and there is a paved, steep, final descent to the cabin. Paved area can get icy, as temps dip. Sand, ice melt, snow shovel on hand.
Nevada City, a 12-15 minute drive away, has great shopping, and a variety of excellent eateries, from upscale fare to informal dining. The town also features live theater and music, bookstores, outdoor cafes and art galleries. It is well worth a visit to take a walking tour of this historic and charming Gold Rush town, have a bite to eat, and perhaps have a wine tasting at our many local winery shops.
Grass Valley, like Nevada City, has many buildings dating back 100+ years, and is just a 18-20 minute drive from Tara. There are charming antique shops, restaurants, wine shops, the old Holbrooke Hotel, a movie theatre and two Cornish Pastie establishments, serving the favorite of gold miners long ago. The Center for the Arts is located on Main St., presenting wonderful live theatre and multi-cultural music events with top musicians.

My husband and I stayed in this adorable little cabin for a weekend retreat, and I cannot stress enough how perfect it was. The views were breathtaking, and most of our time was spend in the hot tub on the back patio overlooking the beautiful creek and forest. We planned on touring the nearby towns, but found it impossible to leave the cozy cabin. We will definitely be returning again come summertime. Thank you so much for an unforgettable stay Linda!
My husband and I celebrated our 1 year anniversary here and it was absolutely breathtaking. Hands down the best part was the huge deck, lounge chairs and hot tub that overlooked the river. It doesn't get better than that. So serene, day or night. The rock formations down below are beautiful and offer many spots to lay out and enjoy the sun or swim. The cabin is the perfect size for one couple just looking to kick back and relax (but would even be doable for two couples with the other room that is included in the rental). The owner has thought about everything you'd need and nothing more which makes for a wonderfully relaxing time at Tara. The only thing we would change was I wished I had scheduled more time for relaxing at Tara and less time in the surrounding Nevada City/Grass Valley area. Go out and do stuff one day and stay in the rest of your trip. It is worth it! We will definitely be coming back!
We’ve been searching for years trying to find a cabin that’s in the woods and is both cute and genuinely secluded, and with Tara we found both, in spades. Once you get off the main road, the neighboring houses get fewer & farther apart on the long & twisty road till you finally get to the locked gate at the beginning of the property. From there it's another 1/4 mile drive down a well maintained dirt road, till the trees give away and then there it is - a tiny fairy house nestled in amongst the woods. Even in the August heat, the front yard looked exactly like it did in the pictures, absolutely enchanting. We didn’t see or hear another person for the 3 days we were there - just the sounds of the wind whispering through the trees, birds singing off in the distance and of course the low roar of the creek below.
The cabin is lovely, with great appliances (LOVE having a dish washer!) and in the bathroom there's a huge two person tub below a large picture window looking out into the forest. When at the cabin, we spent most of our time on the large deck that looks out over the creek. Read a little, get in the hot tub, get out and read some more. Repeat as necessary. When away from the cabin it's equally as special - the walk down to the private swimming hole isn’t bad at all, and once there it was nature at it’s best: cool, mossy, ferns - simply paradise. And in the other direction, a beautiful hike up the creek with equally beautiful sights & sounds as well.
Linda was beyond helpful and provided us with all the information we needed for a great trip. We even had the opportunity to meet her on the way out and had a great chat about the area, the cabin & it's history. Since the moment we got into the car, we’ve been planning our next trip back. Can’t wait!
My husband and I spent our 30th anniversary here and it was the most wonderful anniversary we've ever had. The beauty of the rock formations along the river behind the cabin are just breathtaking. Sitting in the spa at night and staring up at the stars.. the whole thing almost felt surreal. The cabin is like a honeymoon dream suite. Can't thank our host Linda enough for providing excellent communication and provisions.. everything was thought of.. literally! Just a tip.. when you get near the end of the route ( you'll know what I mean) there will be 4 drives/small roadways to choose from, pick the 2nd one from the right, that will lead you to the right gate. Her directions are clear but somehow we goofed that up ;) Thanks again Linda, we will be back :)
My husband I decided to visit gold country...well, he wanted to visit gold country, I wanted to relax. Made a few stops along the way to Nevada City from SW Washington. When we arrived at the cabin, fell in love. I almost hesitated renting the cabin when I read the review saying it was "a little off the grid." Glad I went through with the reservation. Definitely nowhere near "off the grid" but totally private. So cute. Even my "logger" husband liked it. He panned for gold, and I relaxed in my chair down on the rocks. It was absolutely perfect. The town is close and Grass Valley is adorable...visited the Empire Gold Mine- very interesting. Long story short, I would be happy to go back to gold country and stay in cabin. Only thing I would have liked, is an iron in the cabin. Thanks for a great stay.
My husband and I celebrated a previous anniversary at this cozy cabin. We loved it so much, we came back for another anniversary. As expected, it was as great as before. Because we had already been here, we knew once we entered the private road leading to this cabin, we didn't want to leave to go anywhere! However, if you can pull yourself away from the views from the cabin deck, town is just a short drive away. We enjoyed our morning coffee on the deck listening to the creek below. Had such a relaxing time, we were already contemplating when we could come back before we even left!
Athlectic Clubs, Yoga and Pilates classes in Nevada City and Grass Valley. Masseuse/masseur available to come to cabin. Ask about booking her/him to come give you a massage on the deck, under a canopy of trees while listening to the musical sounds of Rock Creek.
