Beth and Dennis Kirwan, owners. Dennis and I grew up on the Mendocino Coast. I lived in Hawaii in the third grade. We currently live in Mendocino, CA. My father lives in Hawaii and is a coffee and mango farmer on the Big Island.
We have two boys, Casey (21) who is a professional bull rider and lives in Texas and Blake (18), is a senior at Fort Bragg High School living with us.
We also have two dogs, Daisy and Colton and a horse named Rooster!
Beth Kirwan purchased this house in 2002
When we bought the property, it was all over grown with a rusty old car in the middle of the lot. We designed and built the Aloha House specifically as a vacation rental. We wanted to create a home to share that is comfortable for families to use as if it was their own.
The house is situated in a great little neighborhood. It is about a two minute walk to the Pacific Ocean (west of the house) and to Kealakekua Bay (North of the house). The location is a perfect home-base for exploring around the island.
The house is beautiful, with its huge mahogany and glass doors that open up to the large lanai. Yet it is very comfortable. We built and furnished it for durability, so no one has to worry about anything.
We are still talking about the great time we had.
The house worked well for our group of 7 adults, 2 kids and a baby. 3 master suites and walking distance to the beach were the selling points. The big table on the lanai was perfect for family meals, as we only ate out once. The kitchen had everything we needed too.
With kids, it was great to have the beach just a couple blocks down. We could go swim & play & get back for lunch without loading up the car. We enjoyed the quiet residential setting as well, and all the little extras the house had topped it all off for a great stay.
We had a great time. I baked my sons wedding cake at the house, so the kitchen is great. We are close to our favorite snorkeling place, Two Step, where I snorkeled with dolphins on 2 occasions, sea turtles almost everyday, and the last day, a very large reef shark. It's just beautiful here.
Overall we're satisfied with this property as it has wonderful location for all activities in Kona. It's spacious with nice view. Unfortunately there's mosquito in one of the rooms upstairs that causes the guests in that room had problem to sleep well for the first night(they bought mosquito repellent spray later). I understand this might be caused by not closing the screen door properly by previous guests, but I really like this place and hope it can be better.
We really enjoyed our stay. Everyone had their own private zones, but the common areas were wonderful, too. Loved our meals on the covered lanai with views in all directions. The house stayed cool and comfortable night and day. Such a quick stroll to Manini beach and world class snorkeling. The warm outdoor shower was perfect for a post-snorkeling rinse-off. Wish we could have stayed longer! Would love to come back again!
It says 4 bedrooms. It's really 3 bedrooms and a loft with 2 twin beds that is open to the living area below.
This was our first trip to the Big Island. We are so happy that we picked the Aloha House to stay at. We have done several VRBO rental and this house was the best so far. If we ever go back to the Big Island we would stay here again. Awesome awesome awesome. Thank you.
Perfect house for the snorkeler/kayaker. The house is a minute's walk from the bay, and right next to the put in for sea kayaking. The house itself offered everything we needed, and had a nice porch where we sat and had breakfast every morning. Honestly, it's a great location, not too far from Kailua-Kona, and not too far from Volcanoes National Park.
Our favorite thing about this house was being on the bay, and being able to snorkel and kayak so easily. We got to kayak very close to whales in the bay, and snorkel near the Captain Cook monument.
This home was like being home for our family. The layout was perfect for traveling with middle school age kids. Highly recommend it !

Although we do not have a minimum number of nights required for a booking, we do not allow less than a 4 night booking over the weekend. The reason for this is to discourage a weekend party booking.
