About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Den, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 12)

On the shores of Kealakekua Bay, a Protected Marine Conservation area, is an enchanting, 3 bedroom/3 bath, water front house called the Dolphin Retreat. This open and airy private home has all the amenities one would desire for a tropical vacation. The property is surrounded by fragrant Plumeria Trees and Coco Palms and includes a sun deck, hot tub and outdoor shower. You can enjoy your dinners watching the famous Kona Sunsets on the spacious lanai, which can seat 8 comfortably. The home has wireless Internet service, High Definition TV and an iPod compatible entertainment system. Kayaks for exploring the Bay are included as well.

It is an unusual morning when the dolphins aren’t frolicking with swimmers and kayakers in the crystal clear waters directly off our ocean front deck. The best snorkeling in Hawaii is found here at Kealakekua Bay. Turtles make their way along the shore to rest, while stunning arrays of tropical fish accentuate the pristine coral reefs. The Dolphin Retreat offers direct access to the Bay for swimming, snorkeling and kayaking.

You will not soon forget your stay at Dolphin Retreat.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This was my first trip to the Big Island. Staying here was amazing. Swimming with the dolphins was unforgettable. Plus, seeing the lava flow into the ocean at night, I felt like I was in a National Geographic special. Love this place. Thanks a million.

Amazing: Perfect Place & Great Vibe; Again Please!

  • 5 of 5

I have had the pleasure of staying here a few times.... and it always impresses me.... if you load up on groceries and your favorite libations before you head down the hill, you may never leave.... just sit on the lanai or in a lounge chair down on the lawn and wait until you see the dolphin show up, slip down to the ocean and enjoy your magic time with one of natures most amazing creatures.... just be sure to be back up on the lanai by sunset.... you look due west and the view will knock your socks off. Enjoy!

Paradise Pleasures

  • 5 of 5

Staying at the Dolphin Retreat was quite amazing. The view of and closeness to the bay was wonderful. It was handy to have the use of kayaks and snorkeling gear right there for us. We loved jumping into the jacuzzi after an exciting morning swimming with the dolphins. The outdoor lava shower was an added convenience. All the rooms were beautifully furnished with wonderfully comfortable beds. The kitchen was well stocked and the outdoor eating balcony added so much to our dining experiences. We just can't wait to go back to Hawaii and will definitely stay at the Dolphin Retreat.

Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

The Dolphin Retreat is an amazing place. I've been back 3 times and can't wait for my next trip out there.

I loved falling asleep to the sound of the waves and swimming in the bay in the morning with the spinner dolphin.

The place is in great shape and very well maintained. I couldn't recommend it more!

Waterfront Paradise South of Kona

  • 5 of 5

This is an amazing property! It is about twenty minutes south of Kona and is literally right on the water. The sound of the lapping waves lulls you to sleep each night. Almost every morning the dolphins come into the bay. They are so close that you can swim out to get a closer view of these amazing creatures or you can take out the onsite kayaks. The house has everything needed for an incredible adventure. The kitchen is well stocked if you want to cook gourmet meals and restaurants are just the right distance away. There is a manager who is always available to answer questions and take care of any needs you may have. There were quality bed linens and plenty of towels. We loved sitting on both the lanai and on the waters edge enjoying the wines and champagne that we picked up at Costco. The property is in excellent condition. This is our second stay at the Dolphin Retreat in the last couple of years and I recommend it highly for a family vacation!

Lovely place and great managers.

  • 5 of 5

The oceanfront house was well furnished and maintained, the managers friendly and helpful, and the natural setting is amazing. We snorkeled every day from the nearby entry safe from spiny urchins. If you love relaxing near Nature, you will thrill to this house. If you prefer controlled environments, you should probably favor one of the mega-resorts north of Kailua instead. The narrow street speeds are slow, but a few of the passing cars' music got a little loud during the day. At night, the wave sounds are wonderful, but bring earplugs in case you are sensitive to waves against rocks or birdsong.

July gets warm and muggy in Hawaii, so insects will fly in at night in the unscreened upstairs livingroom and kitchen if you insist on keeping the lamps bright. Ceiling fans help, as does going to bed and rising early in the cool mornings to watch the dolphins jump in the distance! Geckos are cute, irrepressible bug eaters you can't completely keep out, and the red headed tanager birds will try to sneak in when you aren't moving around, so just keep all your unattended food covered and put away, and close the louvered upstairs doors when you are in the bedrooms, which are screened.
