Beautiful home with amazing hosts!

  • 5 of 5

This house is absolutely wonderful! There are so many unique qualities to this home, that you truly feel that you are in an island oasis. No detail was spared, and the decor is picture perfect. The owners are some of the most wonderful people I've ever dealt with. We felt so at ease because they made us feel like we had "friends" on the island in case anything went wrong. We were able to relax and enjoy our vacation...and that view!! A true gem, that I highly recommend :o)

Wonderful vacation in terrific house

  • 5 of 5

Four of us (two couples) stayed here the first week in May. Our impression of this rental is consistent with the other reviews . . . wonderful.

The house itself is well-appointed and has a real sense of openness. The living area is on a level above the driveway, allowing clear views of the ocean from the lanai. The master bedroom is separate from the main house, requiring a short walk on the wrap-around deck. However, this was not a problem, and gives the master bedroom an added sense of privacy.

The house itself is very close to the ocean and beach with easy access across a small road. The pebbled beach is very private. On calm days one can easily snorkel, with good fish activity toward the rocks on the right (north) side. The hike along the beach is relatively easy and offers nice views of the ocean and coastline. Going to the left (south) to the lonely tree takes about 30 minutes one-way and is pleasant in the early morning before it gets hot.

As stated, the location is approximately 20 minutes south of Captain Cook along Route 11, and so one should best stock up on groceries and drinks before arriving at the house. Per Gregg’s useful suggestion, we stopped at Costco and Safeway after arriving at Kona airport. The house is on Mapuna Road, the final cross street at the bottom of mile-long Kaohe Road. This road undergoes a change of elevation of over 1000 feet over that distance. This is not a problem, but it is useful to have low gear on your vehicle.

Although one could stay in and around the house the entire week and enjoy the overall ambience, we opted to go out most days. Nearby, 20 minutes away, is Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park. In addition to the ruins and historical display, there are several good hikes. Also, right next to the park is Two-Steps beach for excellent snorkeling. We saw spinner dolphins while there. We also made separate day trips to Volcanoes National Park, the north point including Pololu Valley, and Waipio Valley for horseback riding.

Restaurants we enjoyed were Keei Café (mile marker 93-34), Waipio Cookhouse, and Huggo’s Restaurant on the Kona waterfront for an elegant sunset dinner.

The owners, Gregg and Laurel, were very helpful, friendly, and responsive. Gregg called us several times to make sure we had everything we needed. Overall, this was a great rental experience and a wonderful vacation.

Wonderful location - beautiful home!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at this beautiful beach-view home. The location is peaceful but within reasonable driving distance to most of the things we wanted to see and do. We loved being able to walk a short distance to the beach to go swimming and snorkeling. There are also trails along the shore in either direction to stretch your legs and take in the shoreline features and views. The owners are also responsive to past reviews as the kitchen now has both a large and small coffee pot. You know it is a well furnished home when all you have to complain about is needing a few more hangers. We highly recommend this property.

Paradise in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Past reviewers have done an excellent job of describing all the wonderful features of this home and Gregg and Laurel's fantastic hospitality. Our family of four (for which there was plenty of room) wholeheartedly agree with all the comments, and also had the following observations:

- The outdoor shower - very cool and super convenient for quick rinses, washing off salt water, etc. Open and spacious, yet very private.

- The provided snorkeling equipment was high quality and very nice to have. The snorkeling off of Pebble Beach was better than expected and so easy to access during calm waters. We went elsewhere to snorkel one day, but found the ease (and no crowds) of Pebble Beach unmatched.

- The Kings Trail (which I learned circumnavigates the entire island) heads off in either direction from just below the house. Both directions provide nice opportunities for short walks, with the south being a bit more inviting given the prominent hillside tree, burial grounds, and the frequent goat herd in the area. Try to go early in the morning when the birds are active and before it gets too hot!

- The mosquitos on the patio (particularly in the evening) were a bit of distraction for us. There aren't many, but unfortunately just enough to be a bit of nuisance. Not sure if this is common or just when we were there.

- As well described, the road down to the house is crazy steep, although after the first time navigating by car becomes simpler and not nearly as intimidating.

- As also well described, plan for significant automobile time if you plan to venture out much. Most of even the closest "attractions" are a minimum 30 minute drive, factoring in the steep road and curvy highway heading north. For some, that could be a minus, for us, the quiet neighborhood and easy beach access were well worth the trade-off.

- Having to haul off your own garbage seems unusual with a VRBO (but also makes sense given the tropic environment); when you see how simple access is to the transfer station you won't mind.

- And finally, the grocery store Choice Mart in Captain Cook is excellent! I'd highly recommend (in our opinion better than the Kona Safeway) with a great selection of organics, gluten-free, baked goods, and everything you could possibly need. For produce, be sure to check out the well marked, friendly (and clean) stand about 5 miles north, before Captain Cook. Fresh Dragonfruit and tree tomatoes are fun to try!

Very fun house and view

  • 5 of 5

The home was beautifully appointed and we got to see high surf as well as calm right out front across the street. We enjoyed the goats next door as well as the wide open space and view.

We also enjoyed getting to learn this part of the island by stopping in at the various shops and restaurants. We especially loved that it cut down on travel time to the Volcano!

Thanks for the memories!
