Best homeaway we have stayed at in the Islands

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for two weeks in September with our 2 year old and it was wonderful. Gregg was extremely helpful and even brought over a child gate to help us keep our daughter wrangled on the deck.

The house is the most beautiful and comfortable house we have had the privilege to stay in. It is also the best stocked. We normally buy a few household provisions before we head to a house, such as laundry detergent, toilet paper and paper towels. I always bring my chef knives and peelers from home as that seems to be something lacking in the kitchens of rentals as well. None of that was necessary here. All you need to bring is sunscreen and food (not condiments) if you plan to cook.

The other reviewers are correct in that this is the "Big" Island and if you want to see any of the guide book sites you will absolutely be in the car for at least an hour and at most two and a half hours. There are more centralized places to stay but in our travel across the island we found that no area was quite like the beauty of the Captain Cook area. We agreed that if we were to go to this island again we would stay here still and only do a couple of day trips to other parts of the island within our two week visit. We found that our favorite places to go were within 10 to 20 minutes of the house. Pu'uhonua o Hōnaunau National Park is right next to 2 step which is by far the best snorkeling we have done in the islands and Ho‘okena Beach Park is a beautiful black sand beach just 10 minutes away. Ho‘okena Beach Park is a "local" beach kept up by the community.

Be aware that in our experience the locals on this island are the least friendly we have come across. You will get the "stink eye" everywhere you go if you drive a rental car or look like a mainlander. We were able to kill them with kindness to make them see we were not the usual tourists but it did take a lot of work and most will not engage you at all. They innately will not trust you or waste smiles on you contrary to what our guide book said. If you are use to Maui which is very tourist-centric this will be a culture shock and somewhat disappointing. Where we stay in Kauai we have experienced standoffish locals but never out-rightly showing disdain for mainlanders. The Big Island is a LOCAL island and tourists seem to be a major irritation for them. That said we would absolutely visit again with this awareness.

Thank you Gregg for letting us stay in your beautiful home!

Amazing SPOTLESS retreat!

  • 5 of 5

The photos do not fully do this home justice, it's even better in person! Lovely modern decor, spacious, very well-appointed, and super clean. We were so comfortable and relaxed here that we cancelled some of our plans to just hang out and read and enjoy the massive lanai. Gregg is a wonderful host and is available for anything you may need. You will absolutely not be disappointed with your stay - just be prepared to want to come back!

Gorgeous location and beautiful house! Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first rental via VRBO and we couldn't have been happier - it really exceeded my expectations! The house is beautifully designed and was great for my family. The master bedroom suite is accessed from the deck - entire wall is glass doors which face the ocean. The other bedroom has 2 twin beds and one double bed and was great for my kids (6, 12, 13). This bedroom also has a sliding door that faces the ocean. There is also a double bed on the covered lanai. The kitchen has everything we needed. The kitchen, dining area, and sitting area is one big open room with a vaulted ceiling and exposed rafters - really nice. The location is stunning - when on the deck the entire left (south) side is unspoiled Big Island, directly in front of you is the ocean. The beach is a pebble beach - when the waves hit the beach and recede it sounds like a glass of ice being filled - unique! The place does not have air-conditioning and there were a few hot nights when we stayed in mid-August. However, all of the rooms have multiple fans and we got used to it. All in all - me and my family LOVED this place!

The location and amenities were perfect. Our three adult daughters joined us for the second week of our stay and they said the online pictures didn't do the home justice. Gregg was a very gracious and welcoming host. He called us 10 minutes after we walked in the front door to make sure we had everything we needed. We will stay here next time we come back and will definitely recommend it to friends Mahalo

It's Paradise in Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We got to the house late at night after a long day and travel from one of the other islands. We were tired but quickly recovered upon seeing the house before us - and that was just the outside. We had to pinch ourselves when we came inside. I live in upstate NY in a lovely area in a nice home but this house just outshines anything I've ever stayed in. And it was still dark out! After briefly exploring the house we went to bed only to awaken to more - breath taking views, gorgeous trees, flowers etc. right outside the door.

The house is situated in a very quiet subdivision. Down, down, down the road and you arrive at a strikingly beautiful but very welcoming home. I'm sure this will sound redundant to other reviews but truly, not a detail was overlooked - furnishings, towels, dishes, kitchen supplies, swim/beach gear, travel guides, etc. The house is stunning but so inviting and comfortable - and very usable. Gregg and Laurel have everything you could possibly need in the home to make your time stress free and fun. The decor is relaxing and the house begs you to try it all, including the bed on the lanai - which is second only to the outdoor shower. Pure luxury!

Going to Hawaii was a trip of a lifetime. Staying in the Erickson's home made it more so. It was such a special place to stay with our family and I know we will never forget it.

Gregg's suggestions and instructions are spot on. It was so helpful to know about the supermarkets before hand as well as all the other tips he offered. And the geckos....which I believe are supposed to bring good luck. Well then, this home is showered with good luck. These adorable critters are so fun to watch and all they want is to eat those bugs - which are not troublesome anyway.

I don't want to repeat what's already been offered by other reviewers. Just know you won't be disappointed with a single aspect of your stay in this truly special house. The hard part is wanting to spend your entire time on the island at the house. It's hard to leave. The pictures on the website are very accurate. Enjoy!!

Thank you Erickson's for sharing your special get away. It was magnificent!

Karin and Larry Fine

p.s. Did I mention the black pebble beach across the "road" - it's not a traveled road really - anyway, listen to the sound of the water as it recedes back into the ocean - a rainstick of nature.

True Kona, amazing property, great hosts.

  • 5 of 5

This is by far the most private home I have stayed in on any of the islands. The home is beautiful with plenty of space and an outstanding deck for watching sunsets. The house was built by a craftsman and truly comfortable with a private master suite.

Laurel and Gregg have thought of everything including mask and fins for snorkeling. There is a pebble beach directly across the street which we found has a beautiful reef. Great hiking along the coast. We were looking to get away from the resorts and enjoy the natural island experience and found the perfect spot. I'm looking forward to my return trip and highly recommend this home if your traveling to Kona.
