About the property

Walk to Volcano Village-Lush Yard-Quiet-Covered Parking-Wood Stove-Heating-WIFI

Nice Home, 1 Mile to Volcanoes Nat'l Park, Sleeps up to 13......This house is a great home away from home with comfortable beds, a 40-inch LCD TV with HD Cable and surround sound, three comfortable futon sofas that can double as beds for extra sleeping because this vacation house sleeps up to 13 guests. There are vaulted ceilings in the living room and master bedroom. There’s a well-stocked kitchen with stainless steel appliances- just bring up some groceries and you're ready to cook on the gas stove. The dining table seats eight with room for five more at the kitchen peninsula counter. A dishwasher makes for easy clean-up. Guests love having the washer/dryer and free high-speed internet access, which is a must for those who need to stay connected. Comfy outdoor furniture are outside for your enjoyment.

Sleep in cool comfort in the high-elevation of the Volcano rain forest, 3700 ft. We have high quality sheets, warm blankets and comforters and a wood burning stove that can warm the whole house on chilly nights. This house is insulated, unlike many others in the area, which can be too cold. The area is quiet and relaxing; you'll enjoy the native Hawaiian birdsong. Our lot is nearly a 1/2 acre and has many native Ohia trees with beautiful red blossoms. View the giant Hapu’u fern trees that grow to 30 feet tall, and tropical flowers from every window.

You'll love this house and there's a lot to do nearby, so you'll want to stay awhile. The entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is about a mile away, but if that makes you nervous, bear in mind the town of Volcano is upslope of the crater and safer from lava flows than other parts of the island. The volcano has been erupting continuously since 1983 and in 2008 a huge steam vent opened in Halemaumau Crater, which can be viewed from different angles at the Volcano House and the Jagger Museum. At the Visitor Center, there's an informative film and rangers can update you on the volcanic activity. There are also free ranger-guided hikes available to admire the impressive steaming caldera that once was a lake of lava. Exploring the park further you'll find sulfur banks, steam vents and a lava tube, which you can walk through. There are also many hiking trails. Visiting after dark you'll see a fiery glow from the steaming vent.

The quaint town of Volcano has a few markets, a gas station, a post office, even a skate park and is home to a Thai restaurant, the Lava Rock Cafe and the Kilauea Lodge Restaurant. A farmer's market with fresh produce, hot coffee, pastries and breakfast sandwiches is open every Sunday morning, from 6:30-9 a.m.

Drive the Mauna Loa Scenic Road to see tree molds, created when a lava flow encountered a damp tree truck hardening the lava around it. More tree molds are seen at the beginning of the Napau Crater Trail. There's also Kipuka Puaulu (Bird Park), a 30-minute hike through an old growth of forest surrounded by newer lava flows. At the end of the scenic road is a trail head to Mauna Loa Trail, the place people start a multi-day trek to ascend the summit of Mauna Loa.

South of the Volcanoes National Park entrance near mile marker 38 is the Ka'u Desert Trail, which lead to footprints, most created during the explosion of 1790 and a few from an earlier explosion in the 1500s.

Volcano Golf & Country Club is a few minutes away at a 4,200 foot elevation. This is the Big Island's oldest golf course, dating back to the 1920s. The layout has stunning mountain views. You may see wild turkeys, Nene geese and Hawaiian hawks. Due to the elevation, expect extra distance on well-struck shots. A round of golf is $63. Pele's restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week. Clubs available for rent, as are gas and electric carts.

The Volcano Winery is a mile past the golf course, with several unusual wines and free wine tasting. We like the Volcano Red.

There are many exotic treasures to see in every direction by driving 30-45 minutes. Punaluu Black Sand Beach is popular with sea turtles that can be seen swimming nearby and resting onshore. Going another direction you'll find volcanically heated tide pools, including the popular Champagne Pond. There’s great snorkeling in this area and on the way there is the Lava Tree State Park, full of lava tree molds. Keep going around the flank of the mountain if you'd like to see where the lava is currently entering the ocean, best viewing is after dark & flashlights are needed.

Hilo is just a half-hour away and is home to Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens with petting zoo hours from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Rainbow Falls is beautiful and there’s also the World Botanical Gardens & Umauma Falls, a triple-tiered waterfall. The Lyman Museum has an incredible display of Hawaiian geology, plant, animal and fish life and there’s also the Pacific Tsunami Museum, many restaurants and shopping opportunities.

About Greg

I'm a husband, father, jack of all trades, coach of all sports and owner/manager of 5 vacation rentals in Hawaii. I was raised in Hawaii from the age of 8 years old after my family moved here from the USA mainland. Hawaii has so much to offer and I hope you get the chance to visit and explore this amazing state.

Greg purchased this house in 2008

Why Greg chose Volcano

We love it in Volcano. You can experience 11 of the 14 climates in Volcano. The ever-changing historical beauty of the Volcano National Park is amazing. The small town feeling and tight community in Volcano is familiar since I grew up in a small town on Oahu.

What makes this house unique

I enjoy the cooler temperatures at the higher elevation in Volcano. It can be over 90 degrees with 100% humidity on Oahu but in Volcano it will be a cool 75 degrees with very little humidity. And at night, the temperature cools down and reminds me of my college days on the mainland.

My family really enjoys the volcanic changes that go on at the Volcano National Park. With the park being only one mile away, it's easy to take a drive after dinner through the park to see the glow of the lava. And every time we visit, we go to the Sunday Farmers Market in Volcano Village.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We came here for the Volcano Run. We each ran & completed the 10 mile run! We enjoyed the home like warmth of the house and all of the accommodations. The wood burning stove is a great touch! Thanks for everything! Mahalo & Aloha

Very nice, but somewhat pricey

  • 4 of 5

The home and property where very comfortable, clean and well furnished. The two bathrooms, were adequate for 10 of us, 6 adults, 4 kids. Master bedroom and bath very comfortable, but there is a water pump and tank outside the exterior of the bathroom wall which is extremely noisy, especially if you go to bed early, it may be the only water pump into the entire house. We only stayed one night and the cost as listed on the VRBO site was $225.00 per night, but the managing agent fee was $244.00, with a cleaning fee of $100.00 and taxes raised the one night stay to $576.00, for 2 family's, which is okay, but for one family it would be very pricey for one night.

Short drive to all, Volcano Nat'l Park and lunch at the Ohelo Cafe, very good home cooking and soups, fish sandwich was incredible. Ate Dinner at the Lava Rock Cafe, very good also, great grass fed burger, and salads. All food prepared at both restaurants are fresh, nice to get away from the processed stuff on the mainland, thought it may seem pricey to some, remember this is not the processed stuff on the mainland but real food on an island.

Owner's Response: Mahalo for your review and for bringing the cost plus the sound of the house water pump to my attention. Although I can't do much with the fixed costs including state taxes, cleaning & VRBO's fees, I can make an improvement to the exterior pump/heater shed so the sound of the pump is not as loud in the house. Aloha!

Great location for us!

  • 5 of 5

This was a very good place for our family of 12 since it is so close to the park. We were able to make many trips to the national park and still accommodate nap time for the little ones, night visits to see the lava, and various hikes. There were plenty of beds and the kitchen was well-equipped for our cooking needs. (Be sure to bring your food with you because shopping options are not nearby.) We loved the fenced yard so the children could play outside while meals were being prepared. The grounds were beautiful with many flowering plants. The neighborhood was very quiet. It was a sanctuary!

Wonderful house!

  • 5 of 5

This house was great although a little cramped. We had 10 people and used all the beds and futons, but were still comfortable. It would be perfect for a slightly smaller group. We had a wonderful time enjoying family time. We loved the open feeling in the family room/dining room/kitchen. We only stayed 2 nights but would have enjoyed longer. This house is perfect for someone in a wheelchair like my mom. It was easy in and out to the car and the house was all on one level.

Just so you know the breaker box is directly behind the garage entry door as you enter inside. We had to turn everything on to get power. Also the water runs hot and cold randomly during showers. Adjusting the shower knob didn't help.

Volcano retreat

  • 5 of 5

We had an excellent vacation and enjoyed staying at the Mauna Loa Estates. It is a beautiful 3 BR house and it was perfect for our family. We saw the volcano erupt at night. We enjoyed many hikes and we were glad to come home to this house to relax.
