Dreaming of a quiet getaway to the North Carolina coast? We did a complete cosmetic renovation of this 4 bedroom / 3.5 bath house in 2008 and continue to make updates annually. This is our home away from home and we want you to enjoy Sunset Beach just like our family does. The property is a great size for a family getaway (with grandparents, cousins, or friends). The Island of Sunset Beach is also a great alternative to the mainland convention/golf villa hotels and condos.

This home has a spacious open floor plan on the main level and is tastefully furnished. The kitchen is well-equipped. There are games and activities galore. Under the house you'll find horseshoes and lots of space to just relax or perhaps take the canoe or one of the kayaks down the canal to the intercostal waterway. The screened porch provides a great venue for an afternoon board game or dining al fresco. Enjoy ocean and intercostal waterway views from most of the decks and rear windows. Sun decks on the main and upper levels provide alternative spots to the beach. Access to the beach is less than 300 feet from the house.

We welcome rentals from families and responsible adults over the age of 25. The house has beds for 8. Absolutely NO pets or smoking in this home or on the property.

About Sunset Beach – it is the Southern-most island on the North Carolina coast and just 20 minutes from North Myrtle Beach. Sunset Beach is one of North Carolina’s most peaceful beaches with over 200 feet of natural dunes before the first row of homes. The atmosphere is quiet and family-oriented, even during peak season months. One of the Nation’s most beautiful wildlife preserves – Bird Island – is just a short walk down the beach. Observe deer, wild goats, sea turtles, and other sea life as well as enjoy miles of undeveloped dunes and marsh areas.

If you're a golfer, you don't have to travel far to enjoy dozens of courses. Also, we're close to many local conference centers (Sea Trail is one), making our home a nice alternative to hotel lodging.

About Jeannette - owner

Welcome to our Beach House! This is our second home on the island - the canal provides easy deep water access for anyone with a boat, jet ski, kayak, or canoe. It also provides an alternative venue for when the family gets tired of the beach. The house was built in 1991, and has undergone a full consmetic renovation, including new appliances, lighting, flooring, ceilings, a rebuilt fireplace, and plenty of furniture upgrades. The home is open and airy - fantastic views inside and out - we love it and hope you do too!

Jeannette - owner purchased this house in 2008

Why Jeannette - owner chose Sunset Beach

o Sunset Beach is synonymous with family - what a fantastic place to vacation!

o Bring your boat or jet skis as the canal provides deep water access to the Intercoastal.

o Extensive dunes and broad, flat beach make for great walks and biking.

o Explore the marsh as an alternative to a day at the beach.

o More 'commercial' activities are a short drive onto the mainland - mini golf, regular golf, dining, movies, etc.

Return Visit

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time visiting the Bugg House. Once again, very enjoyable. The place is clean, home-like, properly furnished, etc. Maintenance and repairs have been made, so it's definitely not neglected. Short walk to the beach, made easy by a pull cart.

Would recommend, would return. Thanks Bugg Family.

Owner's Response: Glad you and your friends could enjoy another fall week getaway to Sunset Beach and our home. We love repeat guests - thank you for working with us on the dates. You had great weather (between storms)! We did replace the one remaining old skylight the week after your stay...constant updates :) Hope to host you again next year.

Exceeded our expectations by a moon shot. (by Grandpaw-t, alias, grand-t the sponsor)

  • 5 of 5

this was the first time i was able to gather my children's families in one house. Of course, there were tears when we departed as time flew by quickly. (finally found a benefit of taking out my hearing aids. the grandkid's responses to video games into the wee hours of the morning did to keep me up. what noise?) the grandkids even got more than a little wet when walking the beach. That splashing was expected. ha ha. We spent many hours just simply walking the beach.

Everybody pitched in. They are already talking about coming back in spite of the long drive (one family drove from northern KY). The Buggs were quick to respond with our questions even though they were hosting their families for Thanksgiving in Charlotte.

Of the neighbors also celebrating Thanksgiving, they were all very friendly.

For me the relaxed environment and very little commercialization on the island was ideal for all of us. there was actually very little wifi-ing, which made me happy to see.

My son is seriously thinking of bringing his fishing boat next time especially if we stay a bit longer. He was wondering about the boat that was parked under your house.

Thanks for helping us make our first home reunion a treasured memory,

Charming & Thoughtful Details + Excellently Maintained + Great Location

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at The Bugg House. The layout of the house worked great for our family (3 adult couples + 2 kids) - 1 bedroom downstairs and 3 upstairs (3.5 baths). The decor was very home-like and filled with pictures of the Bugg family. We especially liked the decor in the half bath. ;) The washer/dryer are located in the kitchen which was very convenient. There was more than enough room for 8 people to enjoy eating, cooking, lounging, and hanging out on the various decks (one on the second floor, two on the main floor, and several nice places to hang out down under the house). The dock out back was a fun diversion for all of us to try out fishing, crabbing, and kayaking (2 were available for use along with a canoe). The beach is a quick 5 minute walk, and the pier and other shops are less than a 10 minute walk.

The house was very clean and very well maintained. The rooms are all beautifully painted and decorated. Many little details made this a true home away from home.

I would recommend to not forget your own pillows. Also, as is the way of most beach houses, the interior of this house is only accessed by a flight of steps, which can be tiring if you are not used to climbing steps. We can all say that our legs left in much better shape than what they arrived in!

Overall, we highly recommend this house and we hope to stay here again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for selecting our home for your recent beach vacation. We do like our guests to feel like it's their home away from home and are glad you felt just that. Totally agree that the steps in/out of the house can provide you with a workout. But what a plus after a great week at the beach to also have toned legs! :) Again, we appreciate your rental and hope you do make a repeat visit.

Enjoyed our vacation and the location of the house. Loved having the dock so we could bring our boat

  • 3 of 5

The kitchen was disorganized, many of the pots and pans were dirty. The pillows on the beds were not comfortable. Also, it was hard to find room to store food without any type of a pantry. We loved the back screened in porch. The grill was nice to have. We enjoyed the hammock as well. We also love using an outdoor shower. The master bathroom was small but we managed. Wish the one bedroom upstairs had the bathroom adjoining it so there could be two masters. There is a lot of furniture in the house and at times it felt crowded. It rained a lot and it would be nice to enter the house without getting soaked by having an overhang over the steps. Additionally, the screened door on the front seemed to be in the way but not work properly nor serve a purpose. Overall, we enjoyed staying at your property.

Owner's Response: We appreciate every rental - thank you for selecting our home for your recent beach vacation. As people do look at reviews and the ratings guests provide, it's important to us to address any compliments, concerns, or general feedback our guests provide. We do try to make the house as comfortable as possible. Given that your stay was towards the end of summer rental season, the kitchen does tend to get a bit disorganized. We have spoken to our cleaning service about checking the dishwasher to ensure it has run after guests depart. As to other items like a standalone pantry, bigger master bath, private entry into an upstairs bath, or outdoor overhang (which is actually not allowed at our property due to building code) - these are all major renovation projects we are not about to undertake. Repeat guests have raved about the new cable decking system and updated screened porch. We will be tending to some kitchen updates in 2017-18 as well. Potential guests can view photos and floor plan online to see clearly what's available. Again, we appreciate every rental and are glad you selected our home for your recent stay.
