About the property

Condo, Studio + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

COLORADO SALES TAX # 02861349

This is a very comfortable slopeside studio with great views of the ski slopes and base area. It was completely remodeled in 2005 with all new kitchen, bathrooms, flooring, and furniture. There is a full kitchen including full size refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave and dishwasher with all necessary cooking and eating utensils. Great for a couple or bring your small children and they can sleep on the two twin size hide-a-beds. This unit is on the top floor so it is very quiet.

When you are ready to go out, pick up your skis from the private ski locker and walk 200 yards to the high speed 6 pack lift that will take you to the top of Durango Mountain. Enjoy the typically quiet slopes on your skis or snow board. Take beginner to expert ski or board lessons for yourself and have your children learn from top notch teachers.

The Bears Den is available to watch your infants and toddlers while you ski. At the end of the day, relax at the brand new Purgatory Lodge at the base or enjoy the shops. For more private relaxation, return to the condo and enjoy the views, watch a DVD or VHS movie or surf the internet on free broadband.

For something different, go snowmobiling in the backcountry from walking distance to the condo or go tubing at the base of the mountain in the afternoon and evening. You can cross the street to the Nordic center for miles of cross country trails. If you're really adventurous, you can sign up for snowcat skiing that leaves from the main lodge.

There is definitely plenty for everyone to enjoy. Park your car when you arrive and relax. Everything you need is within a few minutes walking distance.

good, affordable slopeside condo

  • 4 of 5

Pros: Great location, and it was literally the cheapest place to rent that close to the slopes. The windows were awesome- great view of one slope and from the kitchen side you can see the chair lift. Fun to spectate! We enjoyed the hot tub on the 2nd floor with the view of the slopes. I didn't see that in the write up for this condo so I thought I'd add it to my review for your reference. It's pretty awesome at the end of a day beating the you-know-what out of ourselves on snowboards, and was a total surprise for us when we got the email from the owner a few weeks out.

Cons: I can't give this place five stars because it was just such an uncomfortable sleeping situation for my daughter who was on the pull out couch. Wow...don't plan on putting an adult on there unless you bring your own big thick mattress covers. I'd rather sleep on the floor, frankly. The queen sized bed was creaky and it's just odd not to have a bedside table to put your phone and a cup of water. I'd humbly recommend for the hosts to add a small pedestal table on the side of the bed with a small night light or something. Maybe add a dim night light in the bathroom...I know these are just little nitpicky things but it was less comfy than it could be. And I have a really tough time sleeping anywhere that isn't home...

Another annoyance: there were also only two very tiny rolls of toilet paper in the room when we got there, and it was gone by day two. I was a little annoyed having to make a special trip to the store to buy toilet paper. We literally weren't planning on driving anywhere all week. They did say bring your own soap and shampoo and lotion and I did- I was stocked on food and everything to last the whole week. There were two hand soaps in the bathroom, both empty. I forgot to bring spices of my own- usually a condo like this will have at least salt and pepper. That would have been nice to have.

Another odd thing that was kind of frightening was that the heaters in the room and bathroom are baseboard heaters and they get very hot. I have kids and they of course threw their stuff around and I had to be super vigilant that nothing landed on those heaters. There's a scary sign that says the heaters could start a fire if any clothing was on them, and I didn't feel completely safe there with all of our gear and the kids.

All in all, I'd recommend this place to a grown up couple but it's very very tight for more than two people.

Owner's Response: Michelle, I'm glad you enjoyed the location and the hot tub. You left quite a list of cons so let me address them individually as every issue is contained in the detailed information that I send out prior to your stay. If you read through other reviews of this condo and our two bedroom unit (vrbo#211606) you will find many reviews stating that I respond very quickly to all requests. 1. The pull out twin sofas are uncomfortable. First, as stated in my description of the property I specifically mention that they are for small children. You are correct that this condo is best for a couple and possibly two small children. I promote exactly that way. We have added memory foam pads to try to make them more comfortable. 2. The queen bed squeaks and there is no bedside table or nightlight. Once again, we do everything we can in the condo to make it comfortable. This is an actual queen bed which is rare in a studio condo. Most other studios have very small and uncomfortable Murphy beds. It also has memory foam on top of the mattress to add to the comfort. 3. There is really no room for a bedside table without putting it in the pathway to the living area. We have left night lights in the condo and they apparently have walked off. 4. I list my personal phone number in the reservation information and specifically mention to contact me for ANYTHING. I have backup supplies available on-site and can have them for you in short order so you would not have had to make any trip. You contacted me with other questions during your stay and know that I responded very quickly providing what you needed. In addition, there is a deli in the plaza a short walk that carries most convenience items including paper products. 5. The same as above and we have a bottle of re-fill hand soap and could have addressed that quickly. The housekeeper that cleaned the unit was not our regular and must have missed that. I'm sorry for the inconvenience but could have fixed the issue immediately if I had known. 6. I will have to check on the spices as they were there last time I checked and must have walked off. They also have spices available in the deli store. 7. Yes there are heaters and they are a very standard style heater that are in many buildings. They are not hot all of the time but depending on how high they are set, they can put burn marks on clothing and bedding. As you stated, I provide plenty of warning about them to prevent any issues.

Summer internship in Durango

  • 5 of 5

My son stayed at this lovely condo while he was experiencing his first adult working summer. He enjoyed the convenience to Durango, the scenic view going into and out of town--he has a great story about coming upon that which he believed was a mother moose and two kids standing in the middle of the road when driving home one evening, and the proximity to hiking, which he was able to do almost every weekend. There is a rocking restaurant down the hill toward the city also! We would try to rent again were another need in the area to arise.

It feels important to add that the owner was responsive to all of my queries (an overbearing parent), which helped with our ultimate decision. It was great to feel that our son was in a safe place over the summer. Thanks, Rick!

Perfect location for small family ski trip

  • 5 of 5

Condo had everything we needed. So convenient to be able to walk to the chair lift. We even came back to condo for lunch while on the slopes. Beautiful area! We hope to visit again. Thank you again for opening your condo to our family. Rick provided all info we needed. We had a fabulous dinner at the Sow's Ear one night.
