About the Property
Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)
If you’re looking for four-star amenities and appointments, this is not the place for you; you won’t be happy, and neither will we. But if you’re searching for a vacation rental offering comfortable sleeping and lounging space (including our new screened lanai overlooking the gardens), a convenient location near historic Hilo town, and a price tag that won’t keep you up at night, we just might be what you’re looking for! The Cottage is perfect for week-long vacations, island hopping, house-hunting or property development visits, writer's retreats or for anyone who just wants to get away to the tropics.
The Ohia Grove property is four private acres of lush, native Hawaiian fruits, vegetation and, of course, ohia trees (pronounced 'oh-hee'-a,' ). During your stay, we invite you to pick fresh avocados, starfruit, citrus and mangos from our trees, and to enjoy looking at the many wild and cultivated flowers that grow on the grounds.

About the owner: Don and Rich were frequent visitors to the Big Island for years before we decided to reduce our traveling expenses and just stay here for good! Rich retired after 26 years at Verizon in Washington DC, where he last served as Executive Director of Federal Regulatory Affairs. He can now usually be found puttering around the house or working on his tan at a local beach. Don is an Information Technologies and Networking specialist who has worked for a variety of organizations, including non-profits, a trade union, a major computer graphics company and several consulting firms. In his non-working hours in Hawaii, he likes to garden at Ohia Grove and at our permanent residence around the corner. All of our jobs on the mainland involved extensive travel, so when we set up our vacation rental, we based it on our experiences. We've worked to set up a Cottage that is comfortable, convenient, cozy -- and moderately priced. We hope you'll enjoy your stay and come to love the Big Island as much as we do. Aloha!
Why the Owner Chose Keaau, HI, USA:
We loved the tropical setting of the four-acre Ohia Grove property, with its many native fruits, flowers and palms. Although it's convenient to Hilo and other area tourist sites, when you're on the property, you feel like you're in your own private tropical garden (and you really are!)
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
One of property's biggest assets is the sense of privacy - rather than being sandwiched in with other tourists in a busy hotel or B&B, you'll have the Cottage and its four-acre property all to yourselves.
Links to more information:
The Cottage is the only residence on our four-acre park-like grounds
The cozy living room is perfect for an evening of quiet conversation...
The screened lanai is a great place to read, day dream, or enjoy an outdoor meal
Most people view the lanai from the inside out, but we like this view too.
...or catch up on a bit of work (yuck) using our free wifi and computer printer.
The dining room seats four, perfect for indoor eating or playing board games
The lanai garden is a growing work in progress...
The yellow hibiscus is Hawaii's state flower.
Be sure to watch for falling coconuts and palm fronds as you stroll the grounds.
Rainbow Falls in Hilo is just a short drive away.
Hawaiian Tropical Botanical Garden is like the Garden of Eden (but with clothes)
Explore our relationship to space at the 'Imiloa Science Center in Hilo.
The Cottage sits back from the road for privacy.
...or you can watch TV or a DVD or read a trashy novel. We don't judge... :)
The perfect spot for a quick breakfast before you head out touring.
Dream of paradise in this comfortable bed...
The kitchen is a perfect size to prepare a quick meal while you do some laundry.
And yes, we have indoor plumbing and on-demand hot water for relaxing showers!
You'll find lots of flowering and fruiting bushes and trees on site.
It wouldn't be Hawaii without palm trees, and we have our share.
The Cottage is near the Volcano Park, but not in the path of any flowing lava.
Akaka Falls is another nearby must-see spot.
One of the many scenic spots in the Botanical Gardens.
Our take on winter: Snow, far away atop Mauna Kea. Ski in the AM, surf in the PM
