Overview

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

The Cottage at Ohia Grove is a quirky, cozy cabin nestled in the corner of our private four-acre park-like grounds. If your idea of an ideal vacation is time spent reading an engrossing novel...enjoying lazy afternoons naps…taking trips to view interesting natural wonders … exploring steam vents and tidal pools… poking around a farmers’ market…sampling the cuisine at nearby restaurants... or just playing a rousing game of Scrabble, then we invite you to consider a stay at the Cottage at Ohia Grove.

If you’re looking for four-star amenities and appointments, this is not the place for you; you won’t be happy, and neither will we. But if you’re searching for a vacation rental offering comfortable sleeping and lounging space (including our new screened lanai overlooking the gardens), a convenient location near historic Hilo town, and a price tag that won’t keep you up at night, we just might be what you’re looking for! The Cottage is perfect for week-long vacations, island hopping, house-hunting or property development visits, writer's retreats or for anyone who just wants to get away to the tropics.

The Ohia Grove property is four private acres of lush, native Hawaiian fruits, vegetation and, of course, ohia trees (pronounced 'oh-hee'-a,' ). During your stay, we invite you to pick fresh avocados, starfruit, citrus and mangos from our trees, and to enjoy looking at the many wild and cultivated flowers that grow on the grounds.

Perfect home away from home

  • 5 of 5

Roomy cottage with comfortable lanai perfect for having coffee, playing evening games and relaxing. Very private area with beautifully groomed grounds to enjoy. If you love nightlife sounds, flora and fauna then this is the perfect place to stay. Cottage has everything you need to cook up a great mahi dinner. Comfortable bed and furniture too. Loved it!

Good Base Camp

  • 4 of 5

Our basic needs were met in the cottage. We enjoyed the lanai and privacy of the property. Close enough to enjoy Volcano National Park, Lava Tree State Park, waterfalls, Kahena Black Sand beach and Uncle Roberts farm market. Thank you for the coffee and fruit.

Great house with a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for several days in December., it was our base camp to see the results of the many volcanic activities on the island. It was cheerful, and well furnished. We loved all the flowers and fruit bowl that met us on arrival. We had fun exploring their property. The kitchen was well stocked, washer and dryer worked great and there was plenty of hot water. The screened porch was awesome. We live out in the country so we understand country noises, but the neighbor's dog was a bit much early in the morning. If we visit the big Island again, we would be happy to stay here.

Perfect jungle hideaway with access to all of the Big Island

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I loved this property. Unlike many VRBOs and AirBnBs, this cottage felt very much like a home. You could tell a lot of thought was put into making the cottage into a comfortable home-away-from-home. Our flight was delayed and we got in late, but Richard made sure we had no trouble finding our way and getting in. There was bowl overflowing with fruit and coffee (a necessity!) when we arrived.

I loved the sound of the jungle lulling us to sleep, and we woke up with the sun to drink coffee on the lanai while drinking our coffee and planning our day. The amenities were excellent. There is a washer and dryer on the property, and the kitchen is well stocked to cook all your meals at home if you need (thought with all the delicious food nearby, who would?).

The outdoor shower was warm and luxurious and perfect after a day at the beach, or hiking in the dust around Volcanoes National Park. There are plenty of travel books for suggestions of things to do, but we found the guestbook the most helpful, as there are years of happy guests who have left recommendations.

The screens kept out biting insects, but you can see the geckos and frogs on the screens, especially at night. There is a large poster in the kitchen where Rich and Don have marked all the edible fruits on the property and you can walk around and find the papaya and yellow guava and other fruits. The trees provide plenty of privacy with only noise of the jungle, which we appreciated.

The island is very accessible from here. You are close to the lava viewing site, Hilo (with my favorite fresh poke at Suisan fish market) and have easy access to the east side of the island and beaches to the east of Hilo where you can swim with turtles. Uncle Robert's night market is a 20 min drive for delicious food and great music mid-week. We were easily able to spend a day at Volcanoes and another up in Waimea to get a taste of cowboy country.

We would absolutely recommend this property and book again next time we visit the Big Island!

About The Owner

Don and Rich were frequent visitors to the Big Island for years before we decided to reduce our traveling expenses and just stay here for good! Rich retired after 26 years at Verizon in Washington DC, where he last served as Executive Director of Federal Regulatory Affairs. He can now usually be found puttering around the house or working on his tan at a local beach. Don is an Information Technologies and Networking specialist who has worked for a variety of organizations, including non-profits, a trade union, a major computer graphics company and several consulting firms. In his non-working hours in Hawaii, he likes to garden at Ohia Grove and at our permanent residence around the corner. All of our jobs on the mainland involved extensive travel, so when we set up our vacation rental, we based it on our experiences. We've worked to set up a Cottage that is comfortable, convenient, cozy -- and moderately priced. We hope you'll enjoy your stay and come to love the Big Island as much as we do. Aloha!

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2007

Why The Owner chose Keaau

We loved the tropical setting of the four-acre Ohia Grove property, with its many native fruits, flowers and palms. Although it's convenient to Hilo and other area tourist sites, when you're on the property, you feel like you're in your own private tropical garden (and you really are!)

What makes this cottage unique

One of property's biggest assets is the sense of privacy - rather than being sandwiched in with other tourists in a busy hotel or B&B, you'll have the Cottage and its four-acre property all to yourselves.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for all the hospitality. (We appreciated) the beautiful yard, fresh fruit and cozy cottage.
