About Sally Ooms
I have a career as a print journalist, and wrote a non-fiction book at a casita on the property. The book is called Finding Home: How Americans Prevail. A native of Kansas City, I lived in New Mexico for more than 20 years. I moved to the California Delta in 2013 after an extensive book tour, and am plotting another book. I still make all the bookings and oversee operations from afar. A manager on site sees to visitors' needs. My mate and I are travelers, part gypsy. We have spent eight weeks in New Zealand junketing about in a camper van, then four weeks traveling around Australia. We have a BMW motorcycle which we took to Alaska a few summers ago, the north shore of Lake Superior and the Grand Canyon. Cooking, gardening, hiking, swimming and painting all top my list of fun things to do, along with appreciating my partner's photography.
Sally Ooms purchased this House in 2003
Why Sally Ooms chose El Prado
The mountains and quality of light found in and around Taos have become part of my soul. I love the organic feel of an adobe house. Plus I am a sucker for a view. That's why I chose my particular viewing spot. The sunrises and sunsets always delight. Watching the moon rise from the portal is magic.

Mountains truly are in your face
This is a beautiful home with a lot of space to enjoy the views and watch the sky change colors. The sweet details are true to NM, and make you feel warm and welcome. We visited with our two small children, and there was plenty of space for them to play while we cooked or watched the sunset/rise. We are regular visitors of Taos and will look to stay here again.
Thanks so much for your comments. I'm so glad you had what sounds like a good, relaxing time. Glad the children enjoyed it too. Come back soon.
Lovely Home close to everything.
We attended a music festival in El Prado and were pleased to find a nice place to stay at after the music ended. Close to Taos and the mountains. Home had everything we need and more. Nice decor and comfortable furnishings. We would stay here again!
The Best of Taos
My friend and I rented "Mountains in Your Face" for a long girls' weekend. I had stayed there a number of years ago with my husband and a friend, and had always wanted to return. I was not disappointed. It was just as wonderful as I had remembered it to be! The views were stunning and the house was oriented in a way that you could enjoy the scenery from inside and out. The kitchen was so well-appointed that making a meal at home was almost more pleasurable than going out. Sitting by the fire in the evening was so relaxing. There was an abundant supply of firewood as well as fire starter sticks and paper so making the fire was a cinch. The house was tastefully decorated in southwestern style. There were many delightful books to choose from as well as dvds and cds. The beds were comfortable and thick towels were provided for the bath and hot tub. It is close enough to Taos to enjoy all of its delights yet far enough out, to appreciate the splendor of the countryside. I hope to return again in the near future.
Thank you so much for your review. I'm glad you found the house to be as you remembered it and that it was an enjoyable time. Hope to see you again soon.
Great house and convenient location--between town and slopes
We had a great stay! The house is outside of Taos, about 15 minutes from downtown and 30 minutes from Ski Valley. The approach to the house is nothing special (the dirt road is a pain but our minivan had no problem) but once inside, the house is beautifully decorated and has everything you need. The beds were comfortable, the linens were new and plentiful, there's a washer/dryer and the kitchen was surprisingly well-equipped for a rental. Multiple pots and pans, plenty of dishes, lots of utensils and the dishwasher made meals very easy. Madrona was very helpful in giving us some hiking ideas (and there were binders full of entertainment ideas and a book or two on area hikes) plus ideas on where to eat and buy groceries, and I liked that a property manager was close by. Wi-fi, all the tv channels, hot tub, kiva fireplace and beautiful views--had we not had great weather for hiking and skiing our kids would have been content to stay at the house all day. All in all a great experience and one of the best houses we've rented so far.
Thank you for your kind and detailed review. We are glad you came and hope you will return some day soon. Best wishes.
Roomy and Comfortable
We and our pooch were very comfortable during our early February visit. The house is spacious enough for a larger group, yet always felt cozy for the three of us. Being a few miles from town, the HDTV channel selection was much appreciated - better than any vacation home we have visited, with the added bonus of a PVR to save and watch our chosen programming over the course of the week. The Wi-Fi was speedy and reliable, as well. The area is quiet and the mountain views are special. We didn't try the second bathroom but the master bedroom shower was somewhat tricky, requiring a fair bit of fiddling to get the right temperature. Perhaps a change in shower head would improve the experience as well. The master shower is the only reason for not giving the home a full five stars. Madrona, the caretaker was friendly and helpful. We would go back in future visits to the Taos area.
Thank you for your nice review. I am glad you told us about the shower head. That is a pet peeve of mine when I go visiting! We will look into it and correct it as soon as possible. Come back soon.
Great family home in Taos.
My family of five spent five nights in the Luna Vista rental house. We really enjoyed the space the house has, the convenient location to the Taos Ski Valley and the excellent hospitality. We would definitely return!
Thanks so much. I am always so happy to hear about fun times at Luna Vista. Do hope you return!
Two Hour Drive from Albuquerque Airport, 15 Min. from Taos) The ski valley for winter fun is 25 minutes away (Taos Ski Valley) and there are others in the area. The house is a nice base in the summer for people who want to hike, raft, walk, enjoy Taos Pueblo or excellent small museums and great restaurants.
Additional information about rental rates
Pets are welcome. When you arrive, you will be asked to give my managers a check for $50 per pet as a refundable deposit. The check is then torn up after the maid checks the home. Usually no problem. There is no fenced yard. Pets must be walked and taken with you when you go out or kenneled. I have a kennel if you don't want to travel with one.
I send a contract stating the amount for deposit which is normally half the rent minus the tax. Renters may return the signed contract with a check or write in their credit card. If they are not comfortable with that, they are able to call me with the number. After I receive the contract and payment, I send an invoice showing the rest of the amount due upon arrival. Last minute is thru e-mail.
