About Kristy & Charles Herrick

Charles and Kristy Herrick live in Issaquah, Washington just east of Seattle in the foothills. Charles does relief work in Africa, India and Afghanistan as well as executive work in the IT industry. He is an author and several of his books are available for reading and a complimentary copy of his book Breath of Kenya is given to our guests as a way of saying thank you. Kristy is an avid gardener. She weaves, spins and knits.

Kristy & Charles Herrick purchased this house in 1997

Why Kristy & Charles Herrick chose San Juan Island

Wonderful seclusion just an hour's ferry ride from Anacortes. San Juan is quaint and a bit yesteryear. Friday Harbor is a small town with just about everything you need except for franchise stores. San Juan gets about a third of the rainy days of Seattle. The main road is only a mile away and it's a calm rural road which is great for running, walking or bike riding. Turning right just before the winery and heading down a tree arched road we fell in love with our 6 acres of paradise. It is perhaps the finest piece of property on the Island.

What makes this house unique

Seclusion. Fishing, crabbing, and tide pool viewing. Unparalleled bird and wildlife viewing. Waterfront cookouts. Water, wonderful view of other islands and Mt. Baker.

Beautiful view and yes, utter seclusion !

  • 3 of 5

Beautiful location, off the grid, rustic. Hard for us older folk to haul our kayaks down the stairs. Be prepared if you bring a bike, you are almost a mile on gravel road to main road. Could use a good carpet cleaning. If you just like to chill and enjoy the view and privacy this is the place!

Owner's Response: So sorry that our guests from Napa were impacted by these items. Our house has had nothing but perfectly happy visitors for 10 years and we seek to accommodate when someone brings something to our attention. We did everything we could to make this stay possible, including working with another guest on the timing of their stay. The result was a reservation in and out on the same day. The prior guests, a delightful couple, unfortunately spilled something just outside of the kitchen on our newly cleaned white carpet. We did not charge them for this but we weren't able to get the spots off before this next guest arrived. Our housekeeper, Jennifer, lives nearby and would have been happy to come over with the carpet cleaner. We had it steam-cleaned again as soon as possible. Kayaking is one of the reasons people rent our home. It is on the non-windy side of the Island. It is safe and it's a real adventure to paddle over to other Islands on the channel. Since the property is quite large (6 acres) it might be hard for an elderly couple to get 17-foot kayaks to the water, but there are now two places to launch. I'm 65 and it has never been a problem for me or my other guests. In fact, we will soon be making 3 full-sized sea kayaks available at the house so that people don't have to bring their own. The Island is a biker's paradise and the long tree-arched lane out to the winery and Road is gorgeous and pleasant. It gives us seclusion and it is a favorite for bikers and joggers because it is so tranquil. You often see deer and other wildlife on the way. It is lightly covered with gravel but it's a hard surface that is well maintained year round. Our home has consistently had the highest ratings in VRBO, with many repeat customers. For most people it is an amazing spot of heaven. We will continue to keep it that way.

Stunning!

  • 5 of 5

There aren't enough words to describe how fantastic this home is... While it is small, simple, and a trek down gravel roads. It was perfect for our two families to share and had Breathtaking views! We loved the deck and yard! The kids played outside every day!!!! Thank you so much for a phenomenal stay.

Wonderful Stay

  • 5 of 5

Myself along with other friends are nurse who take a retreat once a year to get away from it all and relax. This year we decided to go to the San Juan Islands. The owners were so easy to work with and nice. Their housekeeper Jennifer left a nice note with her number in case we needed her. The property is amazing. The house was stocked with everything you need and is very private. We would rent there again next year but we will have too many people (10-14). We are keeping it in mind for other years though with fewer people.

Comfortable and Quiet

  • 5 of 5

The house was well-appointed with everything we could need. It was clean, comfortable, and cozy. It's right by the water, which made for a lovely view. We spent most of our time relaxing, reading, talking, and playing board games. It was the perfect way to get away from everything for a few days. I look forward to returning someday.

My husband and I spent 5 nights here for a 40th anniversary trip. We spent a lot of time reading on the spacious deck and gazing at the water before us. Lots of birds and watched a couple of seals when off in the distance a solitary whale swam up the channel. I felt so lucky to see it. We had plenty of time to explore the island and had perfect weather. Thank you to Kristy and Charles for allowing dogs on their property. Our golden retriever was very happy!
