Del Mar Artistic Vision, Ocean Views, Private Pool & Spa

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,800 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

Architectural House, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, bed in study, loft, sleeps 9-13, pool

This 2800-square-foot, five-level architectural house has a timeless design inspired by the artist who commissioned it for her own home in the 1970s. The views of ocean, pool and gardens are rivaled by its interior views -- of high open-beam ceilings, wide passageways, and big, open rooms bathed in natural light from many windows and skylights. Decorated with a mix of the traditional and the whimsical, the property invites you to breathe, rest, dream, laugh and play.

The two full suites are upstairs, each with ocean views, a full bath and a large dressing room. The master suite has a king bed, full sofa-bed, lots room for air-mattresses and private balcony; the guest suite has a queen bed and twin Murphy bed. A smaller bedroom downstairs offers has one queen bed, and French doors to its own private patio. A ladder loft at the top of the house, with four twin beds, serves as a fourth play/sleeping room for kids.

Indoors, you can splash and feast in the big kitchen, equipped with a six-burner, two-oven Wolf commercial-style range, large prep island, and a wood-burning fireplace for toasted desserts. The kitchen table can seat 8, and the island has 5 stools on two sides. Entertain in the big living room, equipped with its own grown-up sized, ocean-view swing, which passes through the (open!) double French doors to the pool deck. Or retreat upstairs to one of the very private suites.

Outdoors, there's grilling and French style dining table in the kitchen garden, lounging on the sundeck, gathering for stories and s'mores round the fire-pit, splashing and lap-swimming in the pool, and soaking in the spa. You can eat by the pool on a Balinese teak dining table, … and if you ever decide to venture off the property, Del Mar's best beaches, parks, shopping, race track, fair grounds and dining are all down the hill.

Although near the beach, this is generally a very quiet neighborhood, and guests must act in ways that will not disturb neighbors; hence when outside, no raised voices, shouting, screaming, or music... but splashing and laughing are fine.

About David Tytler

I am a scientist and long time world traveler who first used VRBO as a renter in the early 2000s. Since I have lived in Scotland, London, Munich, Paris, Tokyo, Shanghai, Los Angeles and New York I tend to see things with a mixture of European, American and Asian values. My passions these days are electronic dance music, yoga and camping in the desert.

David Tytler purchased this house in 2014

Why David Tytler chose Del Mar Heights

Before this house, I lived in an elegant 1914 Victorian/Craftsman house, and I moved to find something more open, spacious and architecturally adventurous. Former owners included artists, and Todd and Marna Temple sold this house to me in February 2014. It is they who began renting this house in 2009 and they kindly took the time to introduce Polina and me to the process. The house is complicated – children cannot stop from running around exploring the different levels, and adults are often lost on the first day. It has many private spaces, making it hard to find people in the house. The house opens up towards the ocean, with a variety of views from different rooms. Some rooms have very high ceiling, but others were designed to be cozy. And the location is unrivaled. In front the hill is steep straight down to the ocean, but it is flatter in the back. Immediately south is the best ocean view in the county and a popular beach. To the north, winding old streets full of overgrown trees, leading to the quaintest town in the county and excellent restaurants. And the house is the ideal distance from the freeway.

What makes this house unique

The house is architecturally unique with many places to play or rest making it fun for both children and adults, as the reviews attest. Since I bought the property in 2014 I have been making changes, bit by bit, moving towards an elegant (marble floor, silver nickel bath) beach style (high beam ceilings, swing in living room) with antique details (5 chandeliers, 9 glass pendant lights, art on walls). Most rooms have been redecorated and photos updated. There are new extra-large quiet washer and dryer units. The furniture is mostly but not entirely new since Todd and Marna kindly sold me some items: the adult sized indoor swing, the convertible bed in the master, all 5 twin beds, the kitchen table (now repainted), the chest by the front door, 2 white tables (now in garage), 6 dining chairs, 8 outdoor chairs, the gas BBQ, outdoor fire-pit, the pool and beach and indoor toys, board games, pots and pans in kitchen. I have added 3 new tables (French wood outside kitchen, long antique Mahogany dining table, poolside Balinese teak table), one additional queen bed (two twins formerly in the small bedroom are now in the loft and study), many new top-rated air mattresses and various chairs and a Stickley couch and reading chair. And the two tortoises that used to live near the kitchen sink are now visiting a local school.

House = Bizarre, Del Mar = Paradise

  • 3 of 5

This home is in a BEAUTIFUL neighborhood, I cannot say enough positive things about Del Mar. The house itself was kind of bizarre: The layout makes zero sense and the house feels like a maze – additionally the art and flow of things seems like nothing really goes together. There is a mix of extremely expensive, beautiful marble flooring, gorgeous chandeliers, and an elegant master bathroom mixed with a completely out-dated kitchen, unfinished paint jobs on the walls, and odds/ends and kitchen furniture that may have been picked up off the side of the road and stenciled. The art included a number of really strange nudes (there is one of a naked lady standing on top of another naked person laying face down?) that I think also caught us off guard. The pool was heated but looked like it may have been growing something; also, typical for the area, there is not much privacy around the pool because everything is so close together. Even speaking at a normal volume, I felt at risk of disturbing the neighbors and losing our rather hefty security deposit, which was a little bit anxiety provoking for me with our large group size. I think the owners live in this house while it’s not rented so it definitely had a more lived-in feel than other properties I have stayed in before (on the plus side, that means if you need something, they probably will give you access to it – be it a rice cooker or beach towels). Some other positives were that there was space for all 12 of us, plenty of amenities, great neighborhood, easy access to a lot in the area, and the owner was very responsive via text and quite helpful, which was nice.

Great home to cook in!

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay with multiple couples (including two babies, a 3 & 6 year-old). We cooked some fabulous meals in the chef's kitchen and spent most nights on the deck looking up at the stars from the hot tub. It is a very unique space and one that we would absolutely consider staying in again during our annual trips to Del Mar.

There is a constant fear of being too loud engrained in the experience, we tried really hard to respect the neighbors and keep the noise to a minimum. It's now 10 days post-stay and we still have not received our $1,500 deposit back. Cross your fingers!

Fun to have a pool

  • 4 of 5

We had two families stay here in July 2017 and overall we had a great time. There was some miscommunication with check in as HomeAway apparently stripped the phone number he sent me so I didn't have his phone number on the day of check in and we hadn't received check in instructions yet. Luckily my friend staying with us found the house and the cleaners were still there, otherwise we wouldn't have gotten in until after 8 pm when he finally called me. Other than that hiccup we had a great time. The kids loved the pool and I loved that we could control the temperature of the hot tub so the kids could get in occasionally. The pool itself was a great temperature though too. There was plenty of space for all of us and the home was well equipped as the owner lives there when not renting it out. It was a short drive to the beach and so does to have beach toys to use.

Great escape!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 spent a week here over Spring Break. What a great place to be! Our four children, ages 8-15, all enjoyed this home, especially its unique lay-out, and its pool. David was very upfront about a few home improvements that were still in the works, but nothing that we couldn't easily work around. Between the loft, the assorted staircases to the many rooms, and of course the swing in the living room, it was a true departure from our routine. The kitchen was well-equipped and very large.

Though it is a very hilly neighborhood, we were able to run down to the beach--usually opting for a ride back up! The convenience of stores and restaurants and of course, hiking trails near-by was also a plus. Thank you David for a very relaxing escape.
