Whether you arrive by ferry or bring your boat to the dock, once you reach Mangrove Bay, you will know that you are in a unique part of Florida - a real paradise where you can escape the fast pace of city life. Enjoy the tranquility offered on this barrier island with gopher tortoises, rabbits, herons, egrets pelicans, osprey, dolphins and manatees. You can walk on seven miles of sparsely populated beach and enjoy finding beautiful shells, starfish, sand dollars and sharks teeth.
Fish off the dock and watch the fiddler crabs scurry among the mangroves at low tide.
The area is renowned for tarpon, snook, redfish and trout. Experienced guides are available at all nearby marinas. Guests are drawn either to the upper deck or the beach to view stunning sunsets and hope to witness the elusive green flash.
Mangrove Bay is a secluded, charming and modest beach house located on Kettle Harbor on Don Pedro Island. This one bedroom, one bath home with hardwood floors, an open kitchen and great room provides a comfortable place to relax, read, or plan your day at the beach, on the water or on the mainland. The fully equipped kitchen includes a microwave, coffee maker and toaster. There is a private dock which can accommodate a single boat of up to 26 feet on mangrove lined Kettle Harbor, an outdoor hot/cold shower (best used under a full moon and bright stars or just to rinse off from a visit to the beach), a charcoal grill, a hammock, beach chairs and umbrellas.
Although less than 300 feet separate the island from the mainland, it feels like a world away.

Thirty years ago we heard of a magical place where fewer than 10 homes were built on 7 miles of pristine beach, the full time population of the island area numbered less than 40. We spent a year looking at properties before buying Mangrove Bay. A few years later, the addition of Interstate 75 cut our travel time in half, then Bocilla Utilities supplied water and we no longer had to carry own own 5 gallon containers. In 1994 ferry service became available for private vehicles. Times have changed but Mangrove Bay retains all of its original charm and appeal. Our children are grown but they have a lifetime of memories sharing time and special experiences with family and friends on the island.
The Owner purchased this house in 1981
Although I was born in Florida and enjoyed the beaches in St. Petersburg, a new world opened up when I first visited the barrier island of Don Pedro. The beaches were blanketed with shells, sand dollars and sharks' teeth, but it was the Caribbean blue crystal-clear water that took my breath away. There were only a few homes and no condos. It was worth spending a year to find our respite away from the stresses of contemporary life.
Being a part of 'Old Florida', breakfast on the dock, picnic lunches on the beach, evening dinners on the deck, showering outdoors under the stars - heavenly.
We wanted you to know this was a perfect home for our group and we thoroughly enjoyed being here for the week. We loved the quiet secluded area with its peaceful, relaxing atmosphere and natural environment. We spent a great deal of time at the beach in search of seashells, and were rewarded with a variety of specimens that we hadn't collected before. Of course, the sand dollars were the most sought after. My granddaughters loved the dock. We had the opportunity to watch two starfish feeding in the shallow water by the dock! Christine and Kelley were able to get some good pictures of the dolphins feeding and putting on a show right near shore on the beach. We made time for reading of the rainy night we had. Thank you for the flowers and strawberries. That was a nice personal just which we appreciated and enjoyed. We also enjoyed the Seashell book since we forgot ours, Best wishes for a great summer, Marlene, Christine, Kelley, Heather and Amanda.
The granddaughters' mother wrote in an E-mail "We truly enjoyed our stay and the island. My girls tell me it was the best vacation they have had. That says a lot since we went to Disney last year for Spring Break! Thank you for the opportunity of using your house." Kelley from Michigan
We have heard many great things about life on Don Pedro Island. Our experience far exceeded our expectations. First of all, we were fortunate to choose this residence as our base for our island get away vacation. We were greeted with flowers and chocolates, left by the owner, on the kitchen counter. The living/kitchen area, with floor to ceiling windows, is comfortable and spacious. The windows allow for the sun beams to brighten the room. The kitchen is fully equipped and functional. Our bedroom and bed were very comfortable, and provided all the room we needed. There's a full bathroom and closet, between the bedroom and kitchen; however, one of our favorite amenities was the outdoor shower. Sitting on the porch deck and dock was a favorite time for me; private and a fantastic breeze.
The island did not disappoint, with miles of practically deserted beach, seashells galore and warm water; we enjoyed many walks. Golf carts can be rented and we carted around the island, taking in the sites of beautiful vegetation, beautiful homes, tortoises and a stop at the island resort.
We plan to return to Mangrove Bay.
It's hard to know where to begin in rating this wonderful vacation spot. I'll begin with the kind and accommodating owners who sincerely went above and beyond to ensure that our stay was a success? They left fresh flowers and chocolates for our arrival and included a great deal of information about the area. The house was perfect in every way. The kitchen was very well equipped and as the cook in the family, I appreciated it's openness to the rest of the living area of the house. The house was extremely clean and comfortable and did not lack for anything. We enjoyed afternoons on the porch while being serenaded by the ospreys who inhabit the island. We spotted several manatees and dolphins swimming in the bay in front of the dock. The island itself is a wonderland of wildlife and because it is only accessible by ferry, the beaches are uncrowded and peaceful. We are already eagerly anticipating our return to this little slice of paradise.
We would to thank the owners for reworking their schedules which allowed us to spend time on the island with family. The cottage was very inviting and comfortable. We brought our boat with us, so the dock was really nice! We were able to walk a few steps from the cottage to the boat and be in the Gulf within minutes! We didn't catch the "big one", but we had a wonderful time trying! We brought our dog, Carly, with us and she made herself at home! She had her bed in front of the sliders in the great room and was able to see everything that was going on. The cottage was very comfortable and had everything we needed. Our kids and grandkids were down the road in a newer home with a pool. Needless to say they liked our cottage the best! The kids caught several fish from the dock. We sat around and played board games and even taught the two youngest how to play checkers! It was a wonderful time had by all...and we look forward to returning. We would like to thank the owners for the chocolate, fruit and flowers. They were very much appreciated! We would recommend this property to anyone looking for a nice quite place to vacation.
How lucky am I to be able to take a month off from work and get to spend it in Florida's best kept secret....Don Pedro Island. The home was in pristine condition when we arrived . Thanks for the strawberries and chocolate that were waiting for us. Where else can you go for a walk on the beach and come back with a dozen sand dollars. It didn't take our dog Sadie very long to relax and enjoy all the other dogs she met on the beach You couldn't ask for a more relaxing and quite place than Don Pedro and Mangrove, Luanne was so accomodating and very pleasant to deal with. We caught 7 different types of fish off our dock and also saw dolphins and sting rays as well. Hopefully we will be able to return again next year.
We stayed over the 4th of July weekend this year and Memorial day last year. Mangrove Bay is perfect for us. The owners have taken great care to make our stays awesome. Don Pedro Island is really a little slice of paradise. You do not get the big crowds on the beach. Very relaxing walking along the beach looking for shells and sharks teeth.
The house has everything you need. You just need to show up with your groceries. The kitchen is stocked with the utensils needed. We are not coffee drinkers but there is nice coffee setup.
I fished daily from the dock and sometimes caught my dinner. I have caught both redfish and trout from the dock. Last year we brought our kayaks and launched them from the dock. It is short paddle down to Don Pedro Island State Park where they have kayak racks while you explore a little more of the island.
We bring our lab with us and he settles right in. Plenty of places to walk him.
To sum it up... We have a great time staying here and this will not be the last time we stay here. Looking forward to the next time.
Thanks for taking such great care of us.
As a first-time island visitor, I was charmed and delighted by the whole experience. The short ferry ride over to the island really emphasized the "get away from it all" aspect of the island. The house is located directly on Kettle Harbor, with a private dock where I could sit and sunbathe and watch the dolphins and sea birds frolic.
It is on "stilts" like other construction on the island, with a wonderful deck right outside the door. The extra height provides an added sense of privacy, although the placement of the homes and the wonderful landscaping and mangroves already insure that peaceful feeling.
This is an awesome place to spend some "away" time alone or with good friends or family. I have bad knees which limit my walking, so I highly recommend renting a golf cart for your island exploration and to get you to the perfect beach spot each evening for the amazing sunsets over the Gulf. My visit was a "reunion" with two college friends from 30+ years ago, and we had a great time. We enjoyed the respite from cable TV, (now I see there are satellite receivers) taking advantage of the large DVD selection. (Don't forget to bring popcorn!) There were also many board games to choose from, but mostly we just enjoyed the place and our visit/catching up on the years. The kitchen was well equipped for our needs. My two friends handled the cooking, and I was the dishwasher.
One night we took the golf cart to the island's lone restaurant, for cocktails and a yummy fish dinner (macadamia crusted tilapia) There was live music to enjoy, and we had a great moonlit ride back to the house. It was a bit chilly for my taste, but my more daring friend used the outdoor shower under the stars that evening.
This is a perfect spot for a couple (or anyone) to spend time together and "recharge" their connection. I hope to return again soon.
