About Mary Jo Cancelmo
Coco-Nuts is owned by an eighth generation Floridian, who has always had a house on Florida's waters...and who prefers the Gulf Beaches and the quaint, quiet beaches of Anna Maria. There are many times we visit our home for pleasure and to make sure it is maintained for our family and guests.
Mary Jo Cancelmo purchased this House in 2008
Why Mary Jo Cancelmo chose Anna Maria
This property was built and owned by a famous local sports commentator, who did many of his sports fishing news off the local Rod & Reel Pier. Its unique design is probably influenced by his son, who is a well-known Tampa architect. It is a corner lot and the beach access and beach is just across the road. There are also 4 other beach accesses within a short walking distance - two being directly onto the Bean Point area. Our beach access leads to a wide white sandy beach. There are 3 Bean Point accesses on the northern tip. Ours is on the Gulf side. It is the widest and most deep. It is also the most private. The other two accesses are also only a short walk. The last of the three opens to the bay side. Our property is the last road on the north end of the island but you can walk to the main street of Pine Ave in Anna Maria where you can catch a free trolley that will take you all over the island.
What makes this House unique
Since the owner also uses this property as often as time allows, Coco-nuts is constantly being up graded and maintained. Hurricane impact windows have been installed and appliances such as large screen TVs, TVs in all bedrooms, refrigerators, dishwashers, stoves are the newer models. Ceiling fans are throughout the house. Both a gas grill and charcoal grill are provided on the back patio. Beach chairs, umbrellas, a small tent to provide shade for children are provided along with a sturdy beach cart. The back courtyard is surrounded by a four foot seawall and gates. There are two areas gated so that pets from upstairs and downstairs can remain separated. The courtyard holds an umbrella/ patio table for six and other patio chairs. There is also an outdoor shower to wash the sand and salt off. The courtyard is accessed by the back kitchen doors and the garage door. Location is right across from a beach access plus within walking distance of 3 other beach accesses. It is in the most private area of Anna Maria on the last expanse of the western Gulf Beach. Walk around the corner and you can be on Tampa Bay. This is the best area to fish from the shore, see the manatees, watch the dolphins swim by. It is within walking distance to the shops and restaurants on Anna Maria. You can catch the free trolley from 7AM to 11PM and go anywhere on the island!

Enjoyed our stay at Coconuts. Mary Jo was easy to work with and everything went perfect.
If your looking for a true BEACH vacation then this is it. We walked on the beach to the world famous Sandbar restaurant multiple times. We walked over to the rod and reel pier a couple times but mostly just stayed out on the beach and enjoyed the clear beautiful water of Anna Maria and Bean point.
Thanks so much. Enjoyed having you...love to hear about your career! Enjoying the wine!
Nice Neighborhood, Close to beach but house NOT as advertised
My wife and I love Anna Maria and have come to the island several times. We’ve never had a problem at rental homes until now.
The owner communicated with my wife ahead of our stay that some kitchen renovations wouldn’t be completed. This didn’t bother us. But then the day of our arrival, the owner contacted us to let us know the home wouldn’t be ready for check in at 4 and that the tile work needed to be finished on Monday of our stay. We have an infant son who missed his nap with the noise from tile cutters in the home. They were not able to finish the job and had to come back another day. Due to the inconvenience, the owner wrote us a check to refund one night’s stay. What bothered us more was the state of the house. There were dirty linens in the washing machine, dirty knives with food remnants on them on the floor, debris all over the floors (screws, razor blade, staples, broken glass, and a large pill). We arrived 1.5 hours after check in time and the house was not clean. The master bed linens had snot on them so we had to do a full load of laundry. A crib is listed as available on VRBO and the owner promised a pack n’ play would be setup. Neither was there. The owner agreed to get the pack n’ play so we could get our son ready for bedtime. A couple hours passed and we never heard or saw the owner. At 7 pm, we had to ring her doorbell and knock on her door to ask again about the bed. She found it in the garage and I had to clean off dust and debris before setting it up. This was a major issue. Needless to say, we were glad the owner found the pack and play but clearly the home listing is incorrect and families needing a crib should be warned. The listing also mentioned outdoor shower. The shower was just a showerhead nozzle coming out of the home (not enclosed). We also had an issue with privacy. The owner stayed in the first floor apartment. On Sunday night she rang our doorbell holding my teeth retainers. She had come into the home looking for her retainers and took these thinking they were hers. I threw out my retainers not sure if she had tried to fit them in her mouth and now have to order new retainers– a $500 cost to me. That lack of privacy is inexcusable. At one point her family called the house phone at 930 pm (we were all asleep). We felt that we could not relax in this house and always felt on edge. Overall, we really were disappointed with this rental. We love the location, but given what we experienced, others should be aware.
Let's take this point by point.
Anyone who arrived during this time period - March 24-31 this year will attest to the fact this year's traffic was the worst ever...traffic backed up past 75th street and up to a 2 hour wait to get on the island (two lane bridge accessing AM). Therefore, service people such as cleaners, repair people , tile people, contractors had double that time getting on and off the island. Tourists will also attest to the horrible traffic problems caused by the height of the tourist season coinciding with spring break. My cleaners who were due in at 10AM did not get here until late afternoon. Please look at the positive cleaning reports left by the 20 other renters. When Brittany mentioned the dishes left on floor, I went upstairs. She then said the bathroom was very clean, it was just the dishes left on floor. I found the dishes unacceptable and have taken proper actions.I was never told about the other items mentioned left on the floor in the unit. I was staying below and would have take care of it immediately.
As to the tile problem, the renter forgot to mention that my tile man, in the middle of his job, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Leukemia. I had to find someone to take his place and it took several days. The kitchen, which had been completely redone, was workable, granite counter tops in, only the tile back splashes to be finished.
The renters did not like the baby crib shown on VRBO and said they would bring their own.My daughter went out of her way (180 miles) to come down and drop her pack and play, B.O.B stroller off in the garage, high chair off in the garage for
their use. never any charge for any of those items.
As to the privacy issue: I make it a policy not to enter premises without knocking, calling ahead, leaving a note, had no response. I have a broken jaw, undergoing restoration for six years. I desperately needed my jaw device, which looks much like a retainer. I thought I had left it in the master bathroom. I retrieved what I thought was my device, only to find, , it couldn't be mine.....very much larger mouth, and no jaw pins. I returned the retainer, jokingly saying, "don't worry, didn't try it on"..never dreaming he would think I did.
I talked with Brittany 3 or 4 times..never once did she indicate such serious concerns. I point blank asked her about the cleaning of the apartment after finding the dishes. She said, no it was just the dishes. The husband never talked to me at all.
My family enjoyed Anna Maria Island, and especially this north end where Mary Jo's home is located - a very short walk and we'd be on the white sands of the island's wide beaches. Every evening many people gathered on the beach to watch the sun set, which was always gorgeous! The location is all residential with a few local shops and eateries. Mary Jo was very responsive and informative and provided great details about places to eat and other things - only a phone call away. We cooked alot, and the kitchen is very well stocked with pots, pans, casseroles, baking dishes, as well as glasses of all sizes, plates, bowls and silverware. We did notice a slight musty smell that lingered on our clothes - possibly due to the home being so close to the water.
Thanks, Polly. Will check on water softner supply...on city water. Enjoyed having you, come back again!
We absolutely loved our stay here on Anna Maria Island! Comfy, clean, and great location!
Coco-nuts was perfect for our family of five! It was very clean and comfortable. Everything we needed was provided along with access to beach wagons and beach umbrellas! The location was ideal...almost like being directly on the beach with the beach access walkway right across the street! We loved walking all over the North End of the island and to the bay side...just beautiful! The beaches are huge on this part of the island...plenty of room to spread out and enjoy! We definitely will be back to stay at Coco-nuts! Thank you!
Thank you for your review, hope you had some quslity family time before school started.
Coconuts is in a perfect location for ease of beach access and a peaceful stay.
We had a really nice stay at Coconuts! The house definitely has everything you need for a nice stay at the beach. I enjoyed my correspondence with the owner Mary Jo Cancelmo and am so thankful for the cleanliness and comfort of her home. There is a wonderful outdoor shower that can be utilized when everyone is calling for the first shower inside 😊 Thank you again for the use of this beautiful home! The Holshouser Family
'Enjoyed having you as out guests...come back! Mary Jo
Had A great time
house is big and spacious we rented two and bottom and where very happy.
Thanks so much. Enjoyed having you as a guest.
Coconuts is located at the southern tip of Tampa Bay.and on the prestiguos, quiet, north end of AM Island. Accessible by 2 bridges from the east, SR 64 (Manatee Ave.) and Cortez Ave. bridge. South bridge of AM leads to Long Boat Key, St. Armands Key, Sarasota area. St. Armands is the Palm Beach/Worth Ave. of the west coast of FL. provides a bit of heaven to the shopaholic, great restaurants to the food-aholic, and quaint areas to people watch with a glass of wine or sangria from the famous Columbia restaurant. Sarasota is the home of the Ringling Museum of Fine Arts and John Ringling's home, which is open to the public. Wenzel Music Hall offers an array of concerts by musical artists and groups from all over the world. Tyler Arboretum offers a paradise to botanical lovers. Visitors to the small island (6 miles in length) find 3 towns...Bradenton Beach is the southermost,...more "touristy" with one main commercial area which dead ends into its city pier. The pier will have a new restaurant in January, a fourth Anna Maria Oyster Bar, one of our favorites. It also has a nice little jewelry shop and a crepery - perfect for late morning brunch Holmes Beach, the middle township, has three little shopping areas, the first of which houses a Publix, CVS & Walgreens, a hardware store, and several eateries and a Subway. Further out on the island on Marina, there is the Holmes Beach Shopping Center anchored by a hardware center, several gift shops, a resort ware shop Irene's( which we recommend). Off from there is a Mimi's cafe, a favorite among the locals) and a beer and wine shop around the corner bend. Further down North Gulf drive, you will find the Beach Bistro, which is excellent, but pricey and noisy. The White Egret and Egret in Anna Maria is a decorator's dream. On down to the northern tip and Anna Maria. One main shopping street..Pine Ave. Salon Salon is great for your beauty needs., several boutiques, and six or more eateries... We recommend you try them all....the kids love Two Scoops and the Donut Shop. Adults love the Sand Bar, Ginny and Janies, Slims, and the Waterfront(pricey). Pine Ave. dead ends into the City Pier..great fishing and a little restaurant up top for various fish specialties...medium price range. Take a right and go to the dead end. You end up at Gallati's Marina...Walk among the docks and the Yachts. Eat sushi at the Marina. Take a left at the dead end of Pine. Hand a right onto North Bay Blvd. You will come to Rotten Ralph's Restaurant and City Pier. You will also find a play park for the kids...right on the beach, complete with public facilities. Again good fishing and a great medium priced breakfast, lunch, & dining experience can be found on North Bay Blvd.(2 blocks from Coconuts)..everyone has to go at least once....and its walking distance from Coconuts as is all of Pine Ave. North Shore is the last street north before the Gulf....quiet and most sought after....join us for that "It's five o'clock somewhere" time....you will relax and soak in all that Florida used to be! Free trolley runs the length of the island from Pine Ave. to Cocquina Park. Usually runs until 11pm. In addition you can catch another trolley for a minimal price and travel on down to St. Armands Key, the "Palm Beach/Worth Ave." of the west coast of Florida.
