Fanore Lodge is nestled between the sea and Slieve Elva, set amid the wonders of Burren flora and its unique geology, offering views of the sea and the long sandy beach, three minutes from Fanore Lodge. There is a local surf school operating from the beach. The Caher River runs by the door, and the soothing sounds of water on rock can be heard from the house. Fanore Lodge is at the foot of the Caher Valley Nature Reserve. The Caher Valley and Caher River probably take their names from the fact that there are so many ring forts or cahers in the immediate vicinity. The house is ideally situated at the starting point of many hiking routes.

The house is protected as a historical structure and has been sympathetically and attractively furnished and decorated according to the period in which it was built. The owner is fond of art and there are paintings and prints of well known artists throughout the house and many images of the Burren.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We SO enjoyed our time at Fanore. We spent one day just driving through the Burren, exploring, and another day riding the ferry out to Inis Oirr and seeing the Cliffs from above and below. I also enjoyed a little walk up along the road by the lodge. It was all so breathtaking. There is room for the soul in that place, and I miss it already! I would sincerely love to come again, and I would certainly choose Fanore again!

Thanks for everything!

An Out of the Gem

  • 5 of 5

Fanore Lodge is a lovely, comfortable home. Geraldine greets you and makes you feel at ease right way. She has stocked the kitchen with a starter kit of coffee, tea, milk, eggs, bread so you don’t immediately have to shop. All the rooms have great charm and the amenities are very good. She even had a fire going for us in the living room upon our arrival as it was a cool day. She has a stock of wood and peat available, but we were there for two weeks so we purchased more at the local store in Fanore. We had a few days of torrential rain, and the house was cozy and inviting. It's very close to the beach which you can see from the house, and well located for strolls and hikes. I highly recommend it.

Fanore Lodge - a Perfect Paradise

  • 5 of 5

This home is perfect for whatever you're looking for. It's a riverfront, ocean-view home in a charming little town. It's beautifully restored and very charming. Geraldine provides everything you will need, and things you weren't even expecting! There are local goodies in the fridge to tide you over until you can make it to a store. The location is right along the Burren Way, and has easy access to all sites in western Ireland. I'm so relaxed right now, having spent a peaceful 5 days in this lovely home. Just a word of advice, plan to arrive before dark -- the area is rural and you may miss your turn-off!

Beautiful Country Home

  • 5 of 5

The house and location are exactly as described. All of the comforts of home. We especially enjoyed the comfy living room with two great sofas. All of the bedrooms were warm and inviting - very nicely decorated - I especially liked the motif in the pink room. We were just the two of us, so we used the large master bedroom with the king sized bed. The biggest bed in all of Ireland!! We also appreciated the back veranda with the gas grill, conveniently outfitted with proper grilling tools. We enjoyed local beef and lamb cooked outside on the grill. The kitchen is very well supplied with just about every tool or accessory a cook might need. And the food provided was much appreciated! Unfortunately, we did not get to meet Geraldine in person, but otherwise our stay was memorable and we hope to visit again.

Fantastic Stay

  • 5 of 5

My sister & I just had the most fantastic time staying at Geraldine's house.

The house is adorable, elegant, comfy, & cozy, as well as extremely clean. You can hear the soft sound of the river from the upstairs. The beds were amazingly comfortable & outfitted with top notch bedding. Geraldine has thought of absolutely EVERYTHING that you may need during your stay.

Location was great. If you want a beautiful walk, just go up the road behind the house. Truly amazing.

Geraldine was easy to contact & quick to respond to any questions that I had.

We would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Thank you, Geraldine!

Delightful house

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful place! Many moons ago, three of us camped on Fanore Beach after cycling up the west coast from Cork. Recently we returned to stay in Fanore and this time in the delightful comfort of Geraldine's house. Fanore Lodge is a delight in every way, as well as being beautifully situated it is a wonderful house and Geraldine's taste is sublime. We love walking and the Burren is best seen on foot. From the house you can follow a number of great routes including the spectacular Black Head Loop (surely one of the best walks in Europe). We love the Burren for the stone, the shapes, the walls, the stiles, the flowers, birds, other fauna (incl. stoats), history and archaeology and the Clare people. Geraldine has an inspiring library to complement the daily jaunts. The Burren in Co Clare is very walker-friendly and everyone benefits from this. Fanore Lodge is a great place to relax too, on the veranda, in the garden, or you can take a stroll down to the beach along the Caher River.

This is a real 'home from home', an ideal base, and perfect whatever the weather: lovely inside but with lots of gorgeous outdoor spots where you can sit and absorb the Burren. We had great weather so didn’t even light the fire but the living-room must be very cozy in bad weather.

Bus #350 is nearby, which is a great asset for walkers/explorers who want to extend their radius without having to drive or being limited by a car.

We arrived with plenty of supplies but Geraldine had left us a wonderful array of goodies. We were welcomed by Paddy who gave us the perfect introduction to the house. Everything was spick and span and there were no problems or hiccups during our stay. There is great generosity about the place: stacks of towels, fuel for fire, kitchen supplies, delish soaps, books, music, even a piano - Geraldine has thought of everything.

Our only problem was having to leave; we are already fantasizing about returning to Fanore Lodge in the near future, on our bikes!

Absolutely perfect

  • 5 of 5

Geraldine deserves a 5+ star for her beautiful house, beautiful location and her friendly personality. She was quick to assist with any issues/questions we had. She provided us with some beautiful local essential foods which was so much appreciated after such a long day of flying. It was cool outside the day we arrived and she had turned on the bed heaters for us so we could have naps in cozy beds.

I am more than happy to provide a positive review (althought I very much want to keep this a secret location all to myself!!)

Will DEFINATELY be back!

Stunning location in the heart of the Burren, a karst landscape of great natural beauty, richly endowed with rare botanical specimens including several varieties of wild orchids. Situated adjacent to the Caher Nature Reserve and the Burren National Park.

Fanore Lodge is nestled between Slieve Elva and the golden sandy beach of Fanore, (500 yards), which is safe for bathing and has a local surf school and Life Guards during summer months. There is a wide range of activities on the door step including sea angling at Blackhead, coastal and hill walking on marked green roads, loop walks, horseriding, golfing and cycling. This region is also full of opportunities for potholers as the area has a extensive network of underground caves.

Home to poets and artists, this inspirational landscape is rich in antiquities including prehistoric settlement and burial sites such as dolmens, cairns and ring forts as well as ruins of medieval monastic sites.

'The Caher Valley and Caher River probably take their names from the fact that there are so many ring forts or cahers in the immediate vicinity. Further up the valley, past the bridge, is a fulacht fiadh or cooking place to the south of the road.

Close to award winning sea food restaurants. North Clare is famous for its traditional music and many of the local pubs feature live music. Only a 15 minute drive to Doolin, renowned for Irish music. The Cliffs of Moher, one of the most popular Irish tourist attractions is also only 20 minutes away. The Aran Islands are a short cruise from Doolin and ferries run several times a day.

Fanore Lodge is a one hour drive to Galway; and during the summer months a fast speed ferry operates from Ballyvaughan to Galway.

Coole Park, to which WB Yeats was a frequent visitor, is 45 minutes drive and Doolin and Ailwee caves are just 20 minutes away.

Lahinch 18 Hole Championship Links Golf course is 30 minutes drive. Doonbeg, a Greg Norman Golf Course, European Golf Course of the year 2010, is only an hours drive away.
