Romantic-Quiet Solitude-Private-Night Sky Undisturbed

Abbey Ridge Retreat is a 1700 square foot red brick one level cottage with all amenities available year round for weekends or longer visits. Our view is the central attraction of this seasonal rental. It’s always spectacular, but at sunset the sky can display colors even an artist would have problems capturing as it changes from moment to moment. If you enjoy a vigorous walk for exercise it’s exactly 1 1/2 miles round trip from the top to the main road. The house features motion sensor lights on all sides to light your way and ambiance lighting using solar lights on the front entrance walkway and the rear of the property to light your way and set the mood. Enjoying a gas log fire inside or just sitting in near darkness on the deck watching for shooting stars on clear summer evenings with a suitable beverage and agreeable company is a Master Card 'Priceless' moment. This quiet abode is ideal for romance as there is complete privacy on our cul de sac.

Whatever outdoor activity, attraction, entertainment, restaurants or shopping interests you in WNC it’s easily available within a 10-60 minute drive. To learn what’s happening locally call the Henderson County Tourist Bureau at 800-828-4244 or visit them on 201 South Main Street in Hendersonville. The house has great cell reception and a WiFi network. There is fully equipped kitchen & fridge with ice maker.

Abbey Ridge is located 5 miles west of Hendersonville on Hwy 64 West in the Horseshoe/Mills River Communities. There is easy access to the property via a paved two lane road, but winter visitors should be advised snow and ice are frequent visitors from November thru March. We recommend “four” or “all wheel drive” vehicles for a winter visit. At least one guest must be 25 years of age unless all guests are 21 years of age or older. Owner will discuss an exception for each rental period.

Abbey Ridge is on one level making it accessible for wheel chairs though assistance may be needed. The property is in a virtual mountain forest with Oak, Pine, Cedar and Maple trees, but close in there is a grass lawn with Mountain Laurel and Azaleas for greenery. There is wildlife with turkey, squirrels, raccoons, opossum, deer, humming birds and there are stories of bear sightings. There are “once in awhile mosquitoes“ spiders and reptiles so watch where you walk or put your hands.

The Abbess, Lady Margaret from England is the Patron Saint of the house. We bid you welcome as in medieval days when abbeys were required to put up travelers and provide a simple supper. We hope to see you on the ridge.

About Philip Stanley

The Owner/Manager is a retired Military Officer who still does consulting work on the side. He retired from active duty in 1993 and moved to Mills River to allow his children to grow up in a safe and 1950's type of environment. The kids are grown, gone, employed and doing well. The property was bought in 2009 and has been restored to life from Crawl Space to Roof. The owner does much of the work himself especially the garden and as a hands-on owner who will do his best to be sure you enjoy your visit to the fullest. Call him just to chew the fat about what to do and see as WNC is a great place to visit and to live.

Philip Stanley purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Philip Stanley chose Smoky Mountains

It is a unique property discovered completely by accident. After one minute of marveling at the view the vision of Abbey Ridge Retreat came to mind to share with visitors that want more than a Holiday Inn experience. Our visitors have rubbed elbows with the incredible hospitable people of western North Carolina that want to share a little corner of heaven where the heavens kiss the peaks.

What makes this cottage unique

Peace, serenity, solitude and ample opportunities abound at Abbey Ridge to restore and to renew the mind, the body and the spirit before returning to an 8 to 5 world.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Joann and family were great guests. They did everything, even fishing at Lake Lure. When I notified them of a big black bear seen roaming the ridge top they made sure their cameras were ready. As a host I have met many people from all over the country. They want just a place to unwind with a comfortable base to return after their forays. That's what we do so our guests don't have to fend for themselves. We are fortunate to live in WNC and we sure love to share it with everyone. So Joann thank you for choosing Abbey Ridge and I am sorry the bear didn't make an appearance. Next Year?

Wonderful stay with amazing memories. Definitely revisiting.

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a serene mountain retreat for a week's vacation. With Mr. Stanley's home, we found it in spades. We always seem to have a hard time because of our dogs; people only want to accept dogs under a certain weight, or charge an exorbitant amount for them to stay. Mr. Stanley was more than accommodating once we proved we would clean up after our German Shepherds. Additionally, my wife always want the 'mountain cabin' feel; although this is more of a house than a cabin, she was very pleased once we arrived on site. This house is very well-situated and laid out quite comfortably. There is a two car garage that could also be used for storage; no required stairs; very spacious living and sleeping areas; an amazing mountain view out the back door viewable by both the kitchen and living room; a large back porch with table, umbrella, and chairs; an indoor and outdoor fireplace; and a well-stocked kitchen for meals in the home. There is even a large yard we could play fetch in with our dogs without having to worry about bothering the neighbors. We have two teenagers, and both were able to have their own private space and utilize the Wi-Fi on site for playing their games, making our family time that much more enjoyable. Mr. Stanley was professional throughout our planning and our stay, yet personable enough that we could discuss planning arrangements. He even found a power cable we left behind and mailed it to us!! The only issues we had was a missing remote control for one of the televisions. One telephone call to Mr. Stanley and he bought a replacement and brought it to the house, calling us when he was coming over so we wouldn't be surprised by his presence. There are multiple grocery stores close by, plenty of sightseeing opportunities, and a only a short drive to the Biltmore Estate. We have stayed in multiple mountain homes and cabins--this is one house at the top of our list and we definitely want to come back in the future. Although my wife says she wants a mountain cabin feel, she specifically wants to come back to this house to see the leaves change in the fall!

Owner's Response: Abbey Ridge Retreat is quite plain and simple. That is the magic in its appeal plus being a step or two closer to heaven in the mountains of WNC with nature's delights and friendly inhabitants to amuse and delight. We enjoyed hosting Kieran, his family and doggies. We're happy they enjoyed their stay, appreciate their gracious comments and hopefully plan a return visit soon. Philip Stanley Owner/Operator

Rested and Restored

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I desperately needed a break from the daily grind and pressures of life and reunite with family who flew in from other parts of the country. Abbey Ridge offered us the opportunity to have the needed solitude, reconnection with family, while meeting all of our needs for fun and exploration in a safe place. There is plenty to see and do in the area. We had adventurous days and relaxing evenings. The home is so comfortable and peaceful. My husband and I realized we need to refresh ourselves more often. We would definitely return to Abbey Ridge. Thank you Phillip, for your hospitality that allowed us to immediately feel right at home.

Owner's Response: Usually we don't meet our guests, but I had to bring several foot stools for guests to rest their feet. We enjoyed a few minutes together over a beer with Donna, her spouse and two sisters reconnecting at Abbey Ridge from different parts of the nation. We also meet their two little doggies who on our initial contact with Donna months ago vouched for their human companions. That sealed the deal because doggies never lie. Our small cottage is quite plain and simple, but that’s the magic in its appeal. Winston Churchill spoke of the power of simple things when he said, “All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope“. We wished Donna and her family a safe journey home with blue skies and a following wind.

Well appointed. Peaceful and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I spent a week enjoying this most peaceful and comfortable home. The view is one of rolling hills and distant views of the mountains. The home is immaculate The beds were very comfortable. The fireplace such an instant joy. The kitchen is well appointed with all one needs to settle in and be at home. Grocery stores and other shopping feels a world away but within ten minutes of most everything. AVL airport is less than a half an hour. It was a pleasure meeting the owner who kindly used his leaf blower to clear the driveway. Instructions for all manor of opening and closing are there for you. Thank you Philip. Jean

Owner's Response: We enjoyed having Jean and her daughter use Abbey Ridge Retreat as their home away from home for a Mom and daughter retreat. WNC is lovely even In the rain and Jean was always upbeat even when the weather was disappointing. Guests have usually agreed with me after their visit that Abbey Ridge Retreat is close to it all yet seems so far away. Thank you Jean for letting us be your hosts. Please come again.

Fantastic Fantastic Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

My experience was consistent with all the prior reviewers. The owner is very thoughtful, organized and experienced renting the house. I recommend contacting the owner for a rate quote as there are several rental options, much easier to discuss over the phone. The location is fantastic, the view in the photo is spot on, the house is immaculate and cozy. I would definately rent the house again. In fact my family and I started planning it on the drive back home. Love this rental for girls weekend or family trip.

Perfect home away from home

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, and our daughter and her husband rented Abbey Ridge retreat for about 4 1/2 weeks while our granddaughter appeared in a play at Flat Rock Playhouse. First things first, the view from the back deck is fantastic!! We all spent many hours enjoying the view and the mountain air, which was always 10-15 degrees cooler than back home.

The house is immaculately clean and very comfortable. It has everything you could possibly want in a mountain getaway. It is easily accessible, yet very quiet and private. Great restaurants nearby. Phil was very accommodating and so responsive to our requests.

We will definitely be back and be recommending this home to friends!!

Thanks again for everything, Phil!!!

Memorial Day Holiday

  • 5 of 5

I cannot speak highly enough of the "Grande" view, impeccable, warm, inviting accommodations and genuine concern and friendliness of the Owner. I am a native of the Hendersonville area but career pursuits have separated me from the mountains I love for the past 40 years. I do visit as often as possible and have stayed many places but this home on Abbey Ridge tops them all. For me, it "is" a little piece of Heaven.

It is close enough to Hendersonville, Flat Rock, Brevard and Asheville to enjoy all they have to offer yet far enough out (and up) to take pleasure in the peace, quiet and beauty of the property and surrounding mountains.

My only concern about submitting this review is that I may never again find an open date for Abbey Ridge! ;)

Returning?....At the first opportunity!

Owner's Response: We seldom actually meet our guests, but for us they are special because without them Abbey Ridge is just a house. Ron came with a heavy heart to be with a high school classmate perhaps for the last time. We hoped Abbey Ridge provided Ron a healing place by providing comfort for the body, reflection for the mind and quiet solitude for the soul in his time with us as he celebrated his friendship with his friend. Our small cottage is quite plain and simple, but that’s the magic in its appeal. Winston Churchill spoke of the power of simple things when he said, “All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope“. So for Ron and his friend we wish each a safe and easy journey home with blue skies, a following wind knowing we are all on the same journey. Peace be unto you this day and forever,
